If someone is on your command line, you have way bigger problems to worry about than your Wi-Fi password. They're already on your system and your network.
That's exactly what I was thinking. If they already have direct access to your system, what's the point? Though this does demonstrate how a hacker could use your machine to hop over to another one with higher privileges on the same network. So from an individual perspective, this isn't all that useful, but if you're trying to hack a corporation it would be much more powerful.
For anyone curious, the "pipe" | keyword is used to redirect the output of a command into something else, like a text file or in this case another command.
My (second) favorite form of piping is "2> nul", equivalent to "2>/dev/null" on Linux. Who needs error messages most of the time, if it didn't work I can just run it again and print the error messages this time.
Yes, that's true. I used those commands back in college where they had super-fast internet, but it was only for the teachers. During a break, I asked a teacher if I could use their computer for a short while. I ran the commands, and that's how I managed to access the teacher's unrestricted internet. 😂😂
It's important to know that this only extracts the saved passwords. And with sufficient privileges you can extract anything. That would be like saying that someone inside your house can steal your microwave.

If they've got access to your computer, that's not too hard. A lot of people, especially those who aren't very tech savvy don't make you enter a password to run s administrator

Just go to Network advanced settings and click on the properties of the network adapter for the wifi. CLick the show button on the password and you will see it. No need to remember the command.

Great command if you’ve lost your WiFi password. Though sure it’s been said, if someone has that level of access, the risk of someone using some of your bandwidth really is the least of your worries 😂
You can also look at the adapter properties in control panel to do the same thing. If you connect to numerous networks either method can be helpful but the odds of someone using this in a malicious capacity is slim to none.

You can also see them through the Windows UI. It is not a secret, there is an easy way to forget the WiFi informations. You can prevent your Windows to keep these if you work in sensible places. You can also schedule a cleaner that will erase them every day for example.
The only way a hacker can use this command is if they are somehow able to run this command on your local system against profiles that are already configured. You cannot "grab" your neighbor's password out of thin air with this or any other command I'm aware of.
Wow -- this is even worse than the text overflow bug that every copy of Windows suffered from (until a patch I think to Win 10 a few years ago) that could give you command control.

Even as a complete noob, you can prompt Chat GPT to generate batch program for you to do pretty much anything (within the limits of the batch commands).

Meh this one varies at a lot.... some don't care, since the wifi that they use is locked down as heck. And any other wifis you connect to, are going to be your personal ones.

Thats why i use MAC filtering on my personal networks. I know what devices should have access and only those devices can sign on, and the SSID isnt broadcasted either.

Both in console as in the wife menu you need admin rights to do this…. Also there are faster tools for that. For example Wi-Fi printer helpers from various sources….
To be fair, this isn’t just Windows. For example, it’s easier done in Android as in you don’t need command line knowhow. There are free apps you can install (or an apk if you’re sneaky) which can retrieve the saved wifi passwords.
This command requires admin and only works with preshared keys, not WPA2/3 Enterprise 802.1X credentials. In the grand scheme of things I'd be less concerned with someone getting my WiFi password than credentials for, say, my banking information.
You should also say you need access to the PC in question. If you haven't been connected to the wifi you'll will not get the password to the wifi. You can also use the Network Gui and click show password. it's hard do gain access to the PC in the first case.
This is only an issue if the person can actually get onto your computer physically or remotely (via malware/exploit). At that point you've bigger issues.

By default, If I remember correctly, on most Windows operating systems, only members of the Administrators group may invoke such commands. Also, the cmd.exe or powershell.exe needs to be run as Administrator. There are a lot of nastier things an intruder could do besides revealing the WiFi credentials. Even without Administrator level access, the user's files and his entire home directory becomes a potential treasure trove if extortion is his game...
I know this is a short video but it cmd needs to be run in admin first then type netsh so will see it on the left hand side showing netsh> then type the commands and you don't have to type out or add netsh each time just the command but still good video to learn from.
You can do it using control panel without remembering any command, just go Control panel>Network&internet>Network&sharing centre>Click on your wifi under connections>Wirelessproperties>Security>your password is there

Unfortunately doesn't work with WPA2-Enterprise I tried but don't show the parameter Key Content
Enterprise is 802.1x, cert based. No preshared keys in play.

The tool is DESIGNED to show you the password. You are not typing it correct :) check the context, cases and your " " usage

FYI: Quotations are used when variables in the command has spaces.
For one, it requires elevation. Secondly, Win API can also be used to do this (again elevation)

This is a command "only" for all WiFi that has been used/connected. Not for finding a new WiFi password

Cause it is programmed to do so. The holes are on purpose, you just have to have a “key”.
