Insomniac Games has a history of releasing great games but this one may be my favorite so far. The traversing through the city is the smoothest any open world game has to offer in my opinion.
I would prefer a better free-jump aside from the normal object based jump. The flow GRINDS to a halt (see what i did their) when you can't get over 2 foot tall fence because there isn't a convenient bouncy-bush nearby an your standard jump is terrible. Your ability to traverse is severely limited on foot, as they obviously built it around grinding, but i think it's too limited, I wish you could conserve the momentum of the game if you took it off-rails and on foot. I know why they did it, i just wish more was added beyond rails and jump. I don't know what. Maybe swinging ropes (though this my just ape spiderman). But, something i dunno. Other than that it's fantastic.
I love that the Achievement Hunter guys and Two Best Friends ended up making almost the exact same character. It's so original that it's completely unoriginal.

I'll be honest this kinda looks like a fun game. Do you ever find it weird that videogames like this suddenly just vanished off the face of the earth or rather has become an extinct breed of game? What I mean is like a triple A wacky third person games that are made by someone other than Nintendo that was well put together just seemed to have died out after the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era. I don't know maybe I'm not looking hard enough.
See the problem is not so much that they're going extinct, it's the fact that a lot of people unfortunately don't want those types of games anymore so whenever video game developers do make video games that are not all gritty and dark, everyone gets angry and upset or they just don't like wacky and zany type of fun (Perfect example is the Saints Row series).

you know there's just something great about taking a little break from my fps, rpg and adventure games to play one that is just balls to the wall fun in an insane way. People complaine that its trying too hard but its that fact that makes me like it.
I like the humor in this game. A lot of people are bashing this whole self-referential fourth wall style of humor but I think it's great when it's done right.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game although I do understand that many people thoroughly despise the humor as it's quite in your face, I have always enjoyed it, I loved Deadpool and I loved this. As for the world, it's absolutely stunning.. It's amazing that if you look at the base, it's nothing more than a dirty brewery but the use of colour and graffiti really brings it to life and the entire world looks like this.. I don't think I'll ever get tired of stylized cities and landscapes.

I wish they just gave you a super-crackdown-esque jump rather than using objects to bounce. It makes trying to scale a 3 foot fence with no d*mn bouncy object nearby a pain in the ass. Which kind of limits the free roam rather than opening it up. I mean it's more open than no jump at all... but still...

Give Unto Caesar It doesn't really limit anything, the city is specifically designed to help you grind and bounce. Also later in the campaign you can have a Crackdown-esque bounce and can even water slide,
Micklo 25 I noted elsewhere (though strangely not in my previous comment) that naturally the city was built to grind and bounce, My problem derives from the fact that the movement seems. limited. It is literally on rails, which limits the amount of novel ways to tackle a situation. I would like some more organic, interplay between the ground and the rails. More traversal options. Weapons built for being used on rails and that benefit from constant movement. I'm fine with the rails and bouncing being the main show piece, but they just need an extra bump to take them beyond what they are currently. The rails are neat, and i genuinely like them, i just feel, personally, something lacking in their incorporation into combat and overall traversal. They and the bounces were made to be THE traversal options, it would have been nice to see more additions. I'm 1/2-2/3 of the way through the game. This is just my observation, it may change. it's not bad, truly,i'm just critiquing some slight issues i didn't enjoy, or thought could have been a bit better.
Am i the only one who hates fourth wall breaking humor? Like it's so hard to do right, and it isn't ever "hilarious" when it happens. ESPECIALLY in video games. I mean you can have self-referential humor, that's awesome, but to smile at the camera and go "huehuehue vidyagayems" is just so... heavy handed.
Saints row does self-referential well because it embraces it's wackyness,the characters note the wackyness, but they are mainly along with the ride. So it rarely ever turns to the camera and goes "gee whiz these video games" and when it does it's awful. THE FOURTH WALL NEEDS TO BE MAINTAINED. I know my character is fake, so when he turns to me to make a joke i can't help but see a team of writers turning to me with their joke, expecting me to laugh. It's not something that can be pulled off easy, or even well in 99% of situations.
Kawaii Snake Sama I'm not saying saints row has the best kind of humor, but it does IT'S type of humor well, whether you find it funny is more of an intrinsic thing. As another example Deadpool also does the wacky bizarre self-referential stuff well, and it can be genuinely funny. But, looking at the camera, going "huehuehuh comics and chimichangas" is not funny What is funny is that deadpool can play the insane man to a straight world, and can be a parody of comics in general, but when the parody goes "LOOK AT ME IM A PARODY" it's jarring. Whenever it happens, regardless the frequency, fourth wall breaking is just... so lame. I mean the character's aren't real. It's the author writing the character to say boy "that author sure is wacky." it's just... so... like i know i'm reading this, you don't need to stop writing to have your character WHICH YOU ARE ALSO WRITING to turn and tell me what is happening.
Give Unto Caesar I think it can be done well. Even outside of humor, breaking the fourth wall can lead to interesting scenarios. Like the Psycho Mantis fight in MGS1 or in the newer Assassin's Creed games where you're literally playing a video game within a video game.
aBDKstan In assassin's creed, that situation doesn't really break the fourth wall. That is mostly being "meta." Metal Gear has some bizarre shit like boss inventing doritos, these also don't break the fourth wall. At least in most senses, it's just establishing doritos as a thing within the world, rather than calling out to one world from another. The fourth wall comes from the idea of a stage, there are three walls to a normal stage and a fourth imaginary wall that separates the stage from the audience. Breaking this fourth wall would be like a Hamlet calling out to help from the audience. Or speaking directly to the audience as if they were in the play, or having the character leaving the realm of the play to speak to the audience. It's an instance in which it is attempting to break down the divide between the real world and the world of the play, in some temporary sense at least. Breaking the fourth wall in a VG is weird because you are supposed to be the person you are playing as, you are playing this adventure, so when the character turns to you and says "hey player," or "hey video games" it jars, what's more it's obviously no longer you the player talking, and it's not the character talking, but it is so evidently obvious that it's the writer talking, something that is not present in plays and films because the player is not asked to take direct control or immersion in the world.

I'm getting a Jet Set Radio meets Dead Rising vibe from this game, and now I really want to play it. This game may be the one reason I get an XBox One.
I'll say this about the game, the humor can kind of ware down on you at times, and it's kind of short (it only took part of a day or two to beat it and that was with all of the side missions). But, near the end it will either have really grown on you or you'll want to break the disc, but at no point playing it did I feel like Insomniac's heart wasn't at least in the right place with this one. I dunno though, that's just my experience with the game.

The game looks okay, but my main gripe with it is how fucking slow and floaty the movement is. I get that it's slow and floaty to make it easy to control, but at the same time that makes it totally unsatisfying. Movement really needs to be exciting in a game like this.

This game really reminds me of Lollipop Chainsaw. The Hyperactive gameplay, Cool looking enemies, and apparent self-sacrficing main character.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game although I do understand that many people thoroughly despise the humor as it's quite in your face, I have always enjoyed it, I loved Deadpool and I loved this. As for the world, it's absolutely stunning.. It's amazing that if you look at the base, it's nothing more than a dirty brewery but the use of colour and graffiti really brings it to life and the entire world looks like this.. I don't think I'll ever get tired of stylized cities and landscapes.
I bet when Matt said "This looks like Pat's place" , he really wanted to say Woolie's place, but since Woolie was there they used Pat. Also, the game looks good visually, but why do you bounce off of EVERYTHING?

I wish they just gave you a super-crackdown-esque jump rather than using objects to bounce. It makes trying to scale a 3 foot fence with no d*mn bouncy object nearby a pain in the ass. Which kind of limits the free roam rather than opening it up.
I mean it's more open than no jump at all... but still...

Give Unto Caesar It doesn't really limit anything, the city is specifically designed to help you grind and bounce. Also later in the campaign you can have a Crackdown-esque bounce and can even water slide,
Micklo 25 I noted elsewhere (though strangely not in my previous comment) that naturally the city was built to grind and bounce, My problem derives from the fact that the movement seems. limited. It is literally on rails, which limits the amount of novel ways to tackle a situation. I would like some more organic, interplay between the ground and the rails. More traversal options. Weapons built for being used on rails and that benefit from constant movement.
I'm fine with the rails and bouncing being the main show piece, but they just need an extra bump to take them beyond what they are currently.
The rails are neat, and i genuinely like them, i just feel, personally, something lacking in their incorporation into combat and overall traversal. They and the bounces were made to be THE traversal options, it would have been nice to see more additions. I'm 1/2-2/3 of the way through the game. This is just my observation, it may change.
it's not bad, truly,i'm just critiquing some slight issues i didn't enjoy, or thought could have been a bit better.

Like it's so hard to do right, and it isn't ever "hilarious" when it happens. ESPECIALLY in video games. I mean you can have self-referential humor, that's awesome, but to smile at the camera and go "huehuehue vidyagayems" is just so... heavy handed.
Saints row does self-referential well because it embraces it's wackyness,the characters note the wackyness, but they are mainly along with the ride. So it rarely ever turns to the camera and goes "gee whiz these video games" and when it does it's awful.
THE FOURTH WALL NEEDS TO BE MAINTAINED. I know my character is fake, so when he turns to me to make a joke i can't help but see a team of writers turning to me with their joke, expecting me to laugh. It's not something that can be pulled off easy, or even well in 99% of situations.
Dude saints row has the worst kind of humor. Fourth wall breaking is good if it isn't shoved in your face every ten seconds.
Kawaii Snake Sama I'm not saying saints row has the best kind of humor, but it does IT'S type of humor well, whether you find it funny is more of an intrinsic thing.
As another example Deadpool also does the wacky bizarre self-referential stuff well, and it can be genuinely funny. But, looking at the camera, going "huehuehuh comics and chimichangas" is not funny
What is funny is that deadpool can play the insane man to a straight world, and can be a parody of comics in general, but when the parody goes "LOOK AT ME IM A PARODY" it's jarring.
Whenever it happens, regardless the frequency, fourth wall breaking is just... so lame. I mean the character's aren't real. It's the author writing the character to say boy "that author sure is wacky." it's just... so... like i know i'm reading this, you don't need to stop writing to have your character WHICH YOU ARE ALSO WRITING to turn and tell me what is happening.
Give Unto Caesar I think it can be done well. Even outside of humor, breaking the fourth wall can lead to interesting scenarios. Like the Psycho Mantis fight in MGS1 or in the newer Assassin's Creed games where you're literally playing a video game within a video game.
aBDKstan In assassin's creed, that situation doesn't really break the fourth wall. That is mostly being "meta." Metal Gear has some bizarre shit like boss inventing doritos, these also don't break the fourth wall. At least in most senses, it's just establishing doritos as a thing within the world, rather than calling out to one world from another.
The fourth wall comes from the idea of a stage, there are three walls to a normal stage and a fourth imaginary wall that separates the stage from the audience. Breaking this fourth wall would be like a Hamlet calling out to help from the audience. Or speaking directly to the audience as if they were in the play, or having the character leaving the realm of the play to speak to the audience. It's an instance in which it is attempting to break down the divide between the real world and the world of the play, in some temporary sense at least.
Breaking the fourth wall in a VG is weird because you are supposed to be the person you are playing as, you are playing this adventure, so when the character turns to you and says "hey player," or "hey video games" it jars, what's more it's obviously no longer you the player talking, and it's not the character talking, but it is so evidently obvious that it's the writer talking, something that is not present in plays and films because the player is not asked to take direct control or immersion in the world.

I'll say this about the game, the humor can kind of ware down on you at times, and it's kind of short (it only took part of a day or two to beat it and that was with all of the side missions). But, near the end it will either have really grown on you or you'll want to break the disc, but at no point playing it did I feel like Insomniac's heart wasn't at least in the right place with this one. I dunno though, that's just my experience with the game.

The game looks okay, but my main gripe with it is how fucking slow and floaty the movement is.
I get that it's slow and floaty to make it easy to control, but at the same time that makes it totally unsatisfying. Movement really needs to be exciting in a game like this.
You can move faster when you level up later in the game.
