      @@myeramimclerie7869 It's the French word for delayed, used historically in English when diagnosing mentally delayed individuals and has been used in a derogatory way against neurodivergent individuals. "Retard".
      I know a lot of ESL speakers don't see it as harmful because in their first language, the equivalent doesn't have the same derogatory history. My second language is Hebrew, and the Hebrew equivalent isn't considered a slur at all.

    The Click is also Swedish where he probably didn't have the understanding that certain words have negative connotations in the English language even if he does speak the language fluently. It's like getting angry with a French speaker who would use the 'retarder' verbe in the context of their language.

    Markie, if it helps, English is not Click's first language, he's Swedish. I have a parent where English is her second language too, and it's actually very common for words to be okay/have a different context between cultures. (For a very mild example, "stupid" is a word we use all the time in English that's not that big a deal, but in the part of Mexico my mother is from, calling someone estupido/a is a lot closer to calling them a dumbass, so it's more insulting.)

    • @Sweet_Dee
      @Sweet_Dee ปีที่แล้ว +119

      That's honestly the most legitimate justification for using that kind of language that I've heard from anyone. Like, obviously it's still bad, but it's understandable that someone wouldn't necessarily know the severity of offensive words in a foreign language. (Especially if a lot of his practicing English was through video games and online chats where slurs get thrown around like confetti💀)

    I can relate with the Click on the bad words stuff. I'm Finnish, neighbor to Swedes, and I had no idea certain words are considered bad or straight out slurs in English language. It's kind of ignorant to think that everyone outside US, England etc would know all English language and its bad words right away... Me for example due to Finnish being a language without she/he/they kinda pronouns, I didn't know that (for example) misgendering was a thing and people would be mad about that, and more. Like we use word "it" for people, and of course you don't use "it" of humans in English. Like r-word, n-word, all of them were new, and now I know and have learned. And I was over 20 already when I did learn.

      Started using social media, video games and internet in general back when I was a teenager in 2011 (the golden age of edgelords) and slurs were basically everyday normal words for the people I interacted online. As someone who only learned basic English language and never been to US or any other country besides my own, I thought the N-word, R-word, F****t and other offensive slurs were just basic english swear words similar to dickhead, scumbag, or asshole. I honestly cringe everytime i remember myself using those words without even knowing the magnitude of negativity and toxicity i brought other people. My language also does not have gendered pronouns so it's a little confusing to translate it in my head so I would often use the person's or thing's names instead of using pronouns which sounds incredibly dumb. lol

    English is my second language, and i can attest that learning a second language is more than just knowing how to say words in a different way, the way you speak, context and cultural implications of certain words dont translate properly, so yes, it takes a while for you to get a grasp of what words are acceptable or not.

I am so frustrated and angry that Blair has been doing this to Click for so long. I was bullied at one of my jobs by a very spiteful, petty person and it made my life hell to the point that I voluntarily took redundancy when staff needed to be reduced. What the Click has been going through must feel very similar.
    In defense of Click using a word that he didn't know was a slur, I can easily see how that would happen. You can get really good at a language, but if you're not actively living in the culture for quite a period of time then there is always context you won't have.
    If he was hearing gaming friends use the word regularly, then it would seem normal to him, having no other experience that would tell him otherwise. And a lot of people do use that word.
    Callum, you often say things like "she's completely mental." Most people don't have a problem with that. However, if English is your second language and you hear people say "you're mental" and "you're r*t*rded" regularly, how would you differentiate which one is considered a slur and which isn't if you had no other context?

    By this point it's clear Blair's behavior is not just an angry or hurt friend who reacted out of emotion, or someone who wasn't a great person in the past and changed. She is still currently displaying a constant, intentional, and focused pattern of bullying and abusive actions, to a scarily obsessive level.

It just meant "that's stupid." No one thought about disabilities. It was just a trendy word, and then it fell out of use. And since it fell out of use, no one updated me that it was now considered a slur in English, because no one said it anymore. As a non-english speaker, yeah it's actually really easy to believe that he wouldn't learn about slurs until a lot later compared to native speakers. Especially because online, people who are ok with using slurs blend them into their normal casual speak, so they don't really register as anything special. But people who care about slurs will refuse to name them regardless of context and meaning of use, making it EXTREMELY hard to learn them properly.
    Like... this thing has been happening to me a lot. I'll come across someone saying "the [whaveter letter]-slur" and I won't immediately recognize the term. I'll ask "hey, I am not familiar, what is that slur? I'd like to learn it so I can avoid it". And the answer I've gotten at least the last five times is vage, not really the actual word but some beating around the bush "figure it out yourself" answer. They'll say "the one that rhymes with [whatever]" or "the one that is like this other word but with this letter changed".
    The result? Most times I have no idea what the slur is. If I do, I forget it really soon. And so, I am pretty sure at some point I'll use a slur I don't recognize, and someone will call me a bigot because no one was willing to educate me on it. Yeah, I believe the click here.
    PS: I know that MARKIE adressed this later in the video, but I am leaving this here anyways. I just keep hoping that talking about it will help change how the internet handles this kind of thing, because I think it's pretty messed up.

Also, the microphone being so close isolates his voice super well. I need to do the same thing to get mine to sound decent lol.

    I am 35 and was diagnosed as Mentally Retarded. So the R-slur, as it's called, was not a slur when I was growing up. I, too, only recently learned that it isn't a medical diagnosis, but rather a slur now. I also grew up extremely sheltered and only recently really spent more time in online spaces and even so mostly just chill with small groups of artists and nerds so I can absolutely see how somebody wouldn't know it's a slur until 2020 (Because like. I didn't know either)
    It means he is in my age group, and he might have been a kid in the time that it WAS actually a diagnosis. (I have Autism and ADHD, and am very slow. "Retarded" basically just means "Slowed" and that was always how I saw it - a way to describe that I was very slow to learn things and pick things up. I have used that word a TON growing up, and even still do because to ME it's reclaiming something that was not a slur in the first place.)

    I'm 31,and I didn't know the R word was a slur until last year. I knew it wasn't a nice descriptor, but didn't know it was a slur. To be fair,society has changed soo much in the last couple of years, that it can be hard to keep up with what is/isn't acceptable behaviour now

      He learnt about it and stopped using it. And hasnt used it since. That counts for a lot. He didnt know. He learnt. He changed and showed it through consistency.
      And I do wanna add, I have been harmed by the r slur. Badly. It still makes me flinch even as an adult.

  • @lisahoshowsky4251
    @lisahoshowsky4251 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In regard to the past language use, even within the same country, depending on where you grow up you can be surrounded by people with vastly different views and may not get a chance to experience a different context until much later in life. Click is someone not only from a different country to what is probably the vast majority of his audience but also someone with English as a second language.
    People like to blanket statement “oh it’s 2020 you should know better” “oh you’re mid-20’s you should know better” but if you don’t have the context how are you supposed to know better? You can’t learn to not do or say something if you’ve never been given the context it’s wrong.
    The Click obviously got the context in 2020, learned, and has done better and he’s quite transparent about it which I think gives further credibility to him💜

    I've been a subscriber of Click for a very long time. He's a well educated man with a very good sense of right and wrong. For this woman to make the claims against him is just an jealousy attack against someone who is loved and respected. I'm very angry, but Click doesn't need me to attack her, so I won't. I will clearly say, I hope Karma has a good handle on this, and I will wait till the outcome of that. Stay healthy, happy and safe always. Blessed be

  • @silvsevie
    @silvsevie ปีที่แล้ว +2

    as someone with english as a second language, not only do you not get the historical context of some words sometimes, but foe some reason words always sound way more hurtful and offensive in your own language. It's like there is some sort of disconnect where saying shit for example has a lot less impact than saying mierda, so if you learn a second language and start picking up words and idioms from media and the internet, sometimes you don't have the full understanding of the impact of some words.
