I actually think the original spinner on the axle should have stayed there - that was just the stirrer, but it's essentially the same part and did the job! Ive had one of these a few years, its great. Children really like nesquik milkshakes in them, never put ice cubes in, not sure thats a good idea. Always think would be nice if the heater was a little bit warmer but overall is a great device.
@@radfoo I would check with the manual. Usually it says if it can. I heard stories of people having unpleasant things in drinks after using a machine that wasn't meant to crush or break ice. Not sure how true that is, but better to be safe than sorry.
I got a velvetiser last year for Xmas. It's amazingly good. Not sure what you meant about subscribing for chocolate packet deliveries etc. You can get the hotel chocolate packets from the shops and some supermarkets for it (just their own super high quality choc) but it works with pretty much all of them. (Willy's hot chocolate mix from Waitrose is bomb) I wouldn't put ice in it (prob work) as I'm worried that'd damage the spinner. But you could just pour over ice like professionals do for cold drinks? Spout and handle make it super easy to pour, it's self clean is very useful and it just works. Plus it's by Dualit so it's prob going to last almost forever. You should try one, even as a one off test.
I would use the normal spinner and fill it up to max. Then I would add a small amount of milk with the frothier spinner and pour on top. If that makes sense. So I get a full cup and frothy top 😂
LOL! I heard the same exact thing and I couldn't help but let out a childish giggle everytime he said it. I can't believe he didn't catch himself when he was editing it or watching it back. I like to think he realized but kept it in just for fun!
My partner has a very similar machine that he used once. So I commandeered it and use it every morning before I go to the office to heat milk to pour in my espresso and enjoy a Latte on the commute. Saves me so much money!
I bought the Dualit Milk Frother, which is exactly the same thing as the Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser (as Dualit make the Velvetiser!). £40 on Amazon for a used like new, and it works perfectly
I enjoy hot chocolate powder with either water or milk. With water reminds me of camping trips of days gone by, while with milk reminds me of special holiday occasions.
I got this exact machine years ago second hand without instructions and thought it sucked because, turns out, I didn’t know how to use it. This video literally changed my hot chocolate game! Thank you!
If I make hot chocolate with water, I always put the powder in a mug, add a splash of milk, use a fork and mix it into a paste. Then add my hot water. It always tastes better 👍 Apart from that...great video as normal 👏👏👏
Love the review. Sadly I bought the Velvetiser before realising Aldi had their own version, but at least I got it in a sale! I do use the Hotel Chocolat chocolate flakes, but also other chocolate powders and it's great (the spout is better than the Aldi version too). Little tip: do try your white hot chocolate with a generous pinch of ground cardamom powder. Amazing!!
Yes, it's the dried milk in the instant cocoa powder. I wish you had tried dark chocolate too and pure cocoa powder with milk and sugar. TY for the video.
Huh?! In the Netherlands we know this apparatus as a milk frother for your homemade cappuccino if you don't have a fancy espresso machine at home. Never thought of making the actual drinks IN it 😳. Thanks fornthis video!
I suspect it's slightly different - we have milk frothers too, but this is meant to be different. Probably stronger and more able to withstand solid (albeit meltable) chunks?
@@OhSoUnicornly I dont thinl it's that different. My brother's girlfriend gifted one to her mum for Christmas. My brother says the milk frother from our coffee machine does the exact same job
It's really a useful gadget for anyone heating milk on a regular. I always wanted a self-stirring pot and this is pretty much what it is, with more added functions.
1. You didn't froth the water, you probably added too much powder and it over frothed the milk powder in it 2. I would absolutely love to try hot cocoa mix that you made with different flavors!! 3. This is basically a milk frother, I have one very similar to it, it even says you can use it to make hot chocolate even though the main function is to warm and froth milk
Long time watcher, first-time commenter here! I love your videos and they always give me a laugh. I have a Nespresso milk frother that is literally the same thing so you opened my eyes to new recipes I am going to make in it!
Just a heads up, if you want to make cold coffee/drinks in the Nespresso frother, if you hold the button down, it cold froths (I have one too and my brother makes his GF hot chocolate in it all the time)
I think the metal springyding is meant to stay on the plastic bit, you just swap the plastic bit without, for the one with, depending on if you want froth or ... noth... *ill get my coat*
The froth gives a creamy velvety feeling on the lips (which is devine). And … it helps to keep the coffee hot for longer because the froth traps the heat.
thankyou Barry my dad is impossible to buy (birthday) and because of this i was able to make an impossible thing in to something very easy love your videos help me lots as well during lock down
Frothy tea is delicious. Where I live, some places serve a really strong tea with condensed milk that's tossed/poured in between 2 cups until it's foamy. Pulled tea. So good.
Hot chocolate made with water is disgusting - I totally agree with you! I only make it with milk. I have this hot chocolate maker and it makes great hot chocolate - you just need to be really careful and not overfill it or you get a right mess!
the powdered stuff usually does not mix well in VERY cold liquids . with the "other " flavors of the instand drink mix , try not adding ice cubes , give it a quick stir before using the machine , give the powder a second to start mixing in . i always add two or more packets of the instant hot chocolate mix per cup , more intense flavor .
Yes the froth you got from that is because it's not just cocoa powder you put in it's hot chocolate powder which contains sugar and milk powder in the ingredients, I agree with you 100% using hot water is not a hot chocolate lol
One thing to consider with getting a milk frother such as this is check your hot water kettle, and get a froth device compatible with the same base so you can swap both out on your counter quickly. Most likely they will use the same base station, and this will save space on your counter and from having to switch the plugs back and forth.
I don’t think the water frothed in the hot chocolate mixed with water. Instant hot chocolate actually contains milk powder so that plus water made milk that could then froth. I have one of these but used it to froth only before I was gifted an espresso machine. Now I wanna try making hot chocolate in it 😃
From my understandings, as an at home barista, with my fancy espresso machine, the froth (if done right) brings the sweetness to the top. If you drink it slow, you get a little sweeter taste in each sip. Of course, the one in the kettle, is not a proper one. This is the one in the video. As an added note, the fats in the chocolate is what you most likely frothed.
If your hot chocolate powder is too bland, try adding an extra spoonful of cocoa powder. Also, I think I really need a hot chocolate maker now. Thanks, Barry.
There was a lot of hype last Christmas 2021 regarding the HC Velvetizer, but a number of people caught on that you can buy a hot chocolate throather at quarter of the price of the HC Velvetizer @99 quid. I bought the Asda throather, which looks very similar to the Aldi one your testing and it's great 👍
Barry just for fun. Try instant coffee and water and see if it froths. I think it might work, because years ago they had an infomercial for some sort of stick blender and they said you can froth water with it, but they put some instant coffee in it first.
Barry, Put the machine away and make some Spanish hot cocoa. Use: 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 cup sugar, 7 tsp. corn starch, 1/2 cup water, 4 cups milk. In a saucepan mix the cocoa powder and sugar, dissolve the corn starch in the 1/2 cup water, mix it into your cocoa mix, gradually heating up and adding your 4 cups of milk, let it sit for 10 minutes. I have a Velvetiser, however I haven't tried it in the machine. I just like my Spanish chocolate, it's like melted pudding. I use less sugar, but that's just personal preference . I first had it in Madrid, and fell in love with this recipe. In your machine, try mint cocoa powder, it's really good, just another suggestion.
I make my hot chocolate with the mix and I will put some milk in first and mix it with just that first then I will fill the mug with hot water . The milk really helps bring it out the chocolate taste
I have the actual chocolate velvetiser from Hotel Chocolat! I think its good but the drinks it makes can be very sugary in the sachets. Its also very bad when you clean it with cold water and a tiny bit of washing up liquid as you have to give it a through rinse. The sachets are also very expensive at £13 in hotel Chocolat
I was so close to buying one yesterday, but today I went in Asda and bought a milk frothy. They had one for £15 but it was silver but I spent the extra fiver and got black and rose gold to go with my kitchen and I’ve just made a hot chocolate in and it’s amazing.
I have the Nespresso Aeroccino 4 and use that for this same task. But I add the hot chocolate powder part way in because otherwise I get burn marks on the bottom.
yeah, I hate instant hot chocolate made with water also. it just tastes so much richer if you make it correctly ! (that is to say, with milk !) now I want hot chocolate. I might see if my local Aldi has this thing. (I'm in the US, so not sure what you guys might have available that we don't.) awesome video !
I've had the same machine from Aldi, called a milk frother and with slightly different appearance. I usually use it for hot chocolate because it's so much better than hand whisking it. You can froth just instant coffee if you make it really strong - see Dalgona coffee.
I bought the Asda version, it does say only use twice in one sitting before allowing to cool, perhaps that's the issue with the water. I agree with Hot Chocolate only being nice with milk, with water it tastes like the diet coke version of Hot Chocolate ie: kack
Hot chocolate powder with water = Brown mud water. No denying this. Before I became allergic to cocoa powder (I don't know why but these recent few months when I drink hot chocolate with cocoa powder, my throat starts itching and turns red. I have been getting allergic to certain ingredients and I believe chocolate powder is on the list as well) I loved hot chocolate with milk. I tried with hot water once, it's literally just mud water.
Had to revisit this video to settle the water v milk argument. Don't drink hot choc well, not had it for years however.... Just bought the vegan Malteasers powdered drink from Aldi. Hot water added and it's amazingly smooth, creamy and chocolatey even with water.
Use Gold Top milk for luxuriousness. The AldiTiser as I call it makes EXCELLENT latte. Add milk of choice and add a spoon of instant coffee basic or posh for a brilliant latte. It can also make great Birds Custard!
Still waiting for your collab video with BeardMeatsFood. He's been dancing around the Southern USA, so I won't blame this on you. I will have to let him know what the viewers want to see!
Barry oointing the thermometer at the camera and saying something's wrong with us is super accurate I had an incredibly violent illness for 2 days, and am now just dealing with the lingering effects!
Hi Barry, just watched this video, we live in New Zealand, bought the VELVETISER hot choc maker last year when we were visiting GB, its we think its a much superior machine to the one you have tested, cost more but worth, lives by its name VELVETISES the drink😋
That is cool. My two granddaughters love hot chocolate with milk not water. We love watching your channel. They are so cute when they are laughing. You make their day and mine. Happy holidays to you and your family.
We have this in Australia from Aldi as well, but its not advertised for chocolate, just for milk and usually next to the coffee maker. Its a pain in the ass to clean, if you use a sponge you end up scratching the enamel. so I usually have to use my fingers because the milk sticks. i've had a few of these :)
My hot chocolate maker costed me 5 euro. It's a small sauce pan. I place the cocoa powder, the starch, the sugar, a tiny pinch of salt, stir together, add the cold milk bit by bit stirring to combine, then I place on the very low hob, stirring until it's glossy and dense. If I am feeling posh I add a square of dark chocolate near the end.
Im normally with you on hot chocolate powders with water, however there is one brand that I really enjoy here in Australia, and thats Quality Street hot chocolate powder, in Choc Fudge flavour. Now I think the winning point is that its a whopping 3 heaped tablespoons (yes, table-spoons) of mix per mug. Its rich, decadent, but I dont think you get much out of a tin. And I havent dared look at the nutritional info yet. It even looks like a rich hot choc rather than dirty dishwater. Really hoping Aldi bring this machine down under! I want one.
The froth should ideally be fully incorporated into the milk giving it a think, creamy texture. These auto steamers can't really accomplish that so you end up with quite watery milk with light foam on top. You made an espresso so I guess you have a machine. The steam wand will do a much better job that the jug.
I'm with you Barry, on the hot choc with milk not water, also try nesquick choc powder, makes amazing hot choc.... also the huge tin of nesquick hot choc powder you can get, also doubles as normal milkshake powder, so 2 in 1!
Instant tea powder would do amazingly well in that! Try adding a bit of milk to your "just add water" hot cocoa mix, you might like it better. (add milk after mixing the drink).
Came close to buying a cheaper one after my Velvetiser broke after many years but went for another on sale, because it makes coffee, matcha, tea, everything bloody else you can think of warm drink wise and it's beyond easy to clean which when you have many disabilities is a pro for sure. This looks canny for sure but without the non stick and the spout it'd be a nightmare for me personally, I'd end off burning myself trying to get the froth out and cleaning looks waaaay more complex with this.
Agree with this, sure the Velvitiser is more expensive but you're paying for the ease of use, better materials and build quality that come with it. There are exceptions where cheap isn't always better
The interior is non stick, needs to be cleaned after each batch as the milk burns onto the hot surface which can affect the taste. It's a bit fiddly but not hard.
I have that milk frother and love it. Storing the frothing attachment in the lid is just genius. Also great for kids that want hot chocolate after school, it won't burn their mouths and they don't make too much or burn the pot. But why did you break the frother? You already had the stirrer...🙈😄
Several years ago I gave my parents a tin of "bespoke" grated chocolate - they didn't use milk, but just added water😭 Never again. But they do make their own customised dry powder hot chocolate mix, & include Horlicks ..... The grandkids, now in their 20s love it. Personally I'm a dedicated grated chocolate drinker & we've recently perfected making it in the microwave.... We do have a Mr Frothy machine from many years ago & it's great if you want to make a lot of frothy hot chocolate. There are lots of TH-cam videos that explain/demonstrate the wonders of frothing coffee granules & chilled water into a dessert mousse. It's possible because of how the coffee is dehydrated. I'm also a big fan of chilled coffee. A shot or 2 of good espresso / left over cafetiere coffee chilled in the fridge & added to cold milk to taste .....😋 Or cold brew coffee with chilled milk. A lot of people comment that these little machines don't get the drink very hot. You need to demo again & explore this with marshmallow melting ability. See how cleverly I made it for you to indulge again 😂
We had a HC veletiser, it died just over 1 year, opened it up and several components exploded, found online they were made by dualit and same PCB in one of their models, just programmed different. Bought one from amazon for £33 to switch the PCB, but the misses preferred the dualit version so got rid of the velvetiser
I have a similar device by Bodum which is intended just for frothing milk for coffee drinks. It works really well for that, although it has way less capacity than the one you have.
We have just about the same thing here, but what wie do is just heat the milk and then pour it over Aero chocolate. Absolutly yummy. The Water-Hot Chocolate ist known here in German too, but we added some condensed milk too. Not my favorite, but it is drinkable.
This works the same as the Nespresso Aeroccino milk frother, with the exchangeable whisk, except that the whisk on the Nespresso one is held by a magnet.
Bought the aldi version after watching the vid and got some work colleagues to buy aswell all of ours have stopped working after a few days and uses sadly
I bought something like this at B&M. It was really good as a milk warmer, but once I put Cocoa powder in the kettle, the heating just stopped working and all I can do now is froth milk. I have no idea how to fix it and I eventually stopped bothering on trying to make it work. I didn't want to spend another £25 on another broken product.
The instant water added hot chocolate has a frothing product added so that even when you just add boiling water and stir with a spoon you will have froth.
I wonder if you put some grated candy canes and dark chocolate With the milkshake could you blend the milk without the frother then put it through again with the frother
I never heard of a hot chocolate maker before. I put cocoa, sweetener and cream in a cup. Stir. Add hot water. Stir again. My husband uses the packages, but uses hot milk heated in the microwave.

Most hot chocolate to be used with water has powdered skim milk in it. If you get it with actual powdered whole milk the result is vastly different.

Was so excited to see this! I’m currently waiting for mine to be delivered 🤣
Love your videos and I agree with you about the water being with hot chocolate mix
I will have to buy one of these. They must be popular: "100+ sold in the past 24 hours"
Barry oointing the thermometer at the camera and saying something's wrong with us is super accurate
I had an incredibly violent illness for 2 days, and am now just dealing with the lingering effects!
Amazing video, glad to see milk is still better than water, for now.
I think it always will be... unless we go cream lol, would prob curdle mind!
Does filling it with clean water and running it again clean out the milk residue? Just a thought.
Love the science lesson mixed in!!!
The one in the lid is just storage for the frothier. You can put it in the bottom when needed.
100% agree with you about milk in hot chocolate.
I want one.
Honestly, I think getting Mrs B a vulvatiser would probably be... well received.
I got one 2 years ago of of amazon for less than 18 pounds. I use it every day. Enjoy.
Just watched "Cooking with Jeca" and she has just posted a wicked looking apple and walnut cake. Good for your recipes around the world. XX
i think the foam is an insulation layer to keep the drink warm. not sure what it does on larger though. makes the burps
That sounds fair enough, yes the spout is quite disappointing on it for sure!
Agree with this, sure the Velvitiser is more expensive but you're paying for the ease of use, better materials and build quality that come with it. There are exceptions where cheap isn't always better
I'm glad you spelled out Velvetiser, because what I heard when Barry said it sounded more like something to do with female anatomy
Is it any good for instant custard?
Be a good video if you had the b&b cocoa version and compared it to the cheaper version side by side especially with Mrs B doing the taste test.
What is b&b cocoa?
@@courtneyolson8028 watch the video lol
@@courtneyolson8028 Hotel Chocolat
@@yamyam_1978 so simply hot chocolate packets you would get when you’re on holiday.
Ok. Gotcha. Thank you.
I have a similar device by Bodum which is intended just for frothing milk for coffee drinks. It works really well for that, although it has way less capacity than the one you have.
Put a few drops of vanilla in the milk with a bit of sugar, great hot milk drink.
Barry can you try gravy and angel delight would love to see frothy gravy .
His face after drinking the milkshake! 🤣🤣🤣
How is this for cleaning? Can you dump it in the dishwasher?
depending on how hot this gets, could try coffee of tea in it as well.
maybe the instant stuff that is mostly sugar?
The instant water added hot chocolate has a frothing product added so that even when you just add boiling water and stir with a spoon you will have froth.
I wonder if you put some grated candy canes and dark chocolate
With the milkshake could you blend the milk without the frother then put it through again with the frother
For Someone who says froff this must have been a challenge . Great vid
When will the U.S get the veggie prep kit?
I never heard of a hot chocolate maker before. I put cocoa, sweetener and cream in a cup. Stir. Add hot water. Stir again. My husband uses the packages, but uses hot milk heated in the microwave.
I used one for a brilliant meringue mix with egg white and sugar. Lovely gadget. Don't use it for paint though.
