    Just charged my Kona electric to 100% and it shows 311 miles (500 Km) range available! Why?
    Because I've been consistently driving it economically so the computer bases each new charge on anticipated range. Since I've been averaging between 4.9-5.0 mi/kWh (7.9-8.0 Km/kWh), the anticipates a much higher driving range than if I were only meeting the "EPA" estimated efficiency of 4.0 mi/kWh (6.4 Km/kWh).

      Ruud Kraan . Am a proud Kona elective owner since Jan. 2 of this year. Residing in Germany I had been observing the local eCar marked for quite some time.....and came to the same conclusion as U did. There is simply no German car that is offering something that can be considered as a serious contender to the eKona. The range of my Kona is a dream, so is driving it. Also the TCO is compared to a combustion car surprisingly low. Lots of free charging points, tax incentives and much less on required services by the dealer ad to the attractiveness of my Kona. I calculated that after about 30 months (360000 km), the eVersions TOC breaks even with the combustion version and from then on supersedes.( provided the costs for gas and electricity remain unchanged)

    When he mentions the range they managed to obtain from both 39 and 64 kWh models, he does not specify to what point. Was that range until the battery died? Range until the battery showed only a mile or two left? Or range to a certain battery percentage?
    Doing the math, If the 39 kWh Kona ONLY went 158 miles on a total charge, that's just barely over 4 miles per kWh, or just under 250 watt-hours per mile driven. That is VERY poor for a Kona electric - based on my own experience. Same for the 64 kWh model. The United States EPA rates the Kona electric at 258 miles range "absolute" (I guess) based on an expected 4 miles per kWh of battery energy. This number is a good starting point, but can be varied considerably by driving technique and conditions.
    My own driving shows about 20-22% reduction in "anticipated range" if one decides to "run with the big dogs" on the freeway at 75-80 miles per hour for a sustained amount of time. So if you're "electron'd up" to 258 miles, multiply that times .78 to determine your most likely "safe" distance to expect to travel at higher sustained speeds. 258x.78=201 miles. That would be your ABSOLUTE "anticipated" range, so then you should figure in a reserve safety margin of at least 10%, maybe even 20%. We'll throw caution to the wind and allow ourselves just 10% which means we further multiply by .90. Thus, 201 miles x .90 = 180 miles driving range. THIS is the range we should reasonably expect to be able to go roaring down the freeway keeping up with traffic. Now, to many that might sound low, but consider this, here in California one is generally well within 100 miles of a DCFC unit from almost anywhere, though I have found routes across the central portion of the State that go much further. The longest I've found is the distance from Clovis, CA to a DCFC in San Luis Obisbo at 161 miles. Still that IS within the all-out, "balls to the wall" driving range of the Kona electric though considering the route is mainly on standard roads, I doubt you'd being doing a lot of driving over 65 mph.
    Also, even if one starts out driving faster, to extend range simply slow down and the Kona will happily oblige with many more miles.
    How many? Well, on open freeway or roadway, ALL electrics are negatively impacted by sustained high-speed driving due to wind resistance and constant power applied without the benefit of regnerative braking. I've found very little improvement driving 65 mph versus say, 70 mph for this reason. Below about 62 mph things seem to start to improve for range with the car creeping up to 4 miles per kWh, and at 56 mph the car will sustain a good 4.2 miles per kWh which means you're EXCEEDING the EPA range by 0.2 miles per kWh used or just under 13 miles MORE for 271 miles range absolute assuming no other changes. By using "hyper mile" techniques it is possible to get those numbers up even more. When going down hill, release cruise control and let the car accelerate as fast as it will (legally), then engage cruise only as speed drops to your preselected number going up the other hill, or better still, use cruise only on the flats where it works best, and let your FOOT do the real magic on the hills. By that I mean, coast down hills - something the Kona does VERY well...leave regen OFF when coasting this way. Then let your speed drop off going up the next hill to a value lower than your "cruise speed" even down to say, 45 mph before gently adding pedal to hold at 45 while climbing out. Why? Because the car uses a LOT less energy at 45 mph going up a hill than at 55 mph! By doing this you save energy coasting down and use less going up the other side, so you can in fact, EXTEND your range even in hilly country! On mountain roads such as Pacheco Pass in California, due to the steepness of the grades, you can and should use regen to hold your coasting speed to something safe and sane, which means you'll be reclaiming a LOT of energy! By then going regen off and "poking" up the next grade you can save much of what you just gained.

    Hi liked the video but you did get a segment wrong, the Kona can do regenerative braking to a stop like the Leaf by holding the left paddle.

    • @crspartans117kilibreaux8
      @crspartans117kilibreaux8 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes indeed! Just pull and hold the left paddle and the Kona will slow at 0.25G, adding in brakes as it comes to a FULL stop. In fact I usually use only left paddle to come to a stop. When using the paddle to stop, upon release the car does NOT roll forward. When using the brake pedal, upon release the Kona WILL roll forward as is normal for most automatic transmission cars.

    • @stevewallace1117
      @stevewallace1117 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can use auto hold to keep it in position. When breaking in cruise control, I reduce cruise speed to 30 km, then let the computer brake it the rest of the way... If there is another car in front of you... Then it will restart back up to your last setting. No car in front of you? Then you will have to hand brake or foot brake. But always be ready to foot brake.

    Good review, much better than the one from Rebecca on the gasoline version. I'll have to say the steering in the leather version has excellent grippy material to it and excellent thickness, however the stitching can be too protruding and uncomfortable. Space in the back is very good unless the front person is very tall, of course, less than the competition but still a good amount. The charging cable fits very well under the boot cover and actually there is quite a lot of space under that cover - the downside is the car does not come with a spare tire, only a puncture kit and pump. I'm shocked by what you say you have to be careful when taking off: at absolutely no moment I felt the car takes off too quickly in the Normal mode. It absolutely accelerates exactly like a gasoline engine car, in fact, a passenger would never guess it's an electric car other than the quiet engine. I had to floor the pedal in Normal mode to get the wheels spin a little. The only moment where the car does feel fast in Normal mode is when accelerating at speed: if you go 50mph and smack the pedal then yes, the thing puts a grin on your face - it's not a high end sports sedan but it does accelerate fast from speed. But in city driving, without any sort of adaptation, this car drives exactly exactly like a normal gasoline engine sedan. I would even say, don't expect that 'instant torque' everybody raves about when driving an electric car. It does accelerate, but it won't crush you into the seat. The ride is very comfortable, and the suspension absorbs bumps very nicely. You forgot to mention the hard braking: the pedal feels very weird when you hard brake, whoever in normal braking is just fine.

    Where the Kona REALLY shines for range is in town, or combined driving! First you must understand what these numbers really represent.
    When you see "range" displayed, that's not the REAL range you have in the sense you think about a gasoline powered car. It's what the CAR "thinks" is going to be your most likely range based on programming and prior operation. For example, if you've been driving economically around town, your "anticipated" range can show quite high. On my own Kona I've seen a 100% charge show a range (anticipated) of 305 miles! That's because I was operating above 5.5 miles per kWh during the prior charge cycle and the car averages that into what it thinks I'm going to do this time.
    Once I charged to 275 miles range at 90% and thought, WOW this is sweet! I ended up ADDING just over 30 miles of range to that charge while driving about 80 miles of freeway and the rest in town, with regen sucking back in every possible electron! Again, I ended up with a "total range" possible of 305 miles by the time I charged up at about 50 miles left. I thought "I" was the smart one until I did the math - 275 miles anticipated range / .95 = 305 miles possible range! When I was fully charged at 90% the CAR "knew" I was going to reclaim those 30 miles? WTF?

      Si Raff Keep the car for 10 years. The monthly cost will be around £317. Subtract from that figure the cost of petrol/diesel that you do not have to purchase each month. Electricity costs are much lower than petrol. The maintenance costs for an EV are significantly lower than for a petrol vehicle (fewer moving parts, no oil changes etc.), so you need to factor that in to your overall cost of owning the car. Just some creative math that might ease the initial shock of the 38k sticker price. Oh, and some governments offer tax rebates as well. Good luck moving toward your first EV purchase. Cheers.

      @Matthew_M11 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) are a type of car that are normally high and off the ground that seat 5-7. Some examples are the Hyundai Kona, Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX9.

    • @rwg2626
      @rwg2626 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew M the kona is only lifted a couple a couple of inches, that does not make it an SUV, the category has been corrupted, an SUV was a 4wd that was too posh to be used as a work horse, eg Land Rover to a Range Rover, I have had several real SUVs, Merc ML Volvo XC90. I also have a car, yes a car that is a Fiat Sidici (look it up) it is higher, has 4wd with diff locks and the all important black plastic wheel arch protection, this is a car not an SUV, the motor industry is just using names to help things sell

    • @Matthew_M11
      @Matthew_M11 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rwg2626 I completely agree. The SUV name is just thrown around now - but I was just going off what Hyundai marketed it as. I despise all SUVs that you can't go off-roading in, they're just there to make money with not a care in the world about driving. What would you classify this as? A wagon?

    The savings aren't just from fuel, EVs are virtually maintenance free, they don't even wear brake pads and discs due to most braking being regenerative. They don't require oil changes, air filters, cam belts, serpentine belts, valve adjustments, etc. etc. The list is endless. Yes they may need an a/c recharge but that's about it.

    Evaluating extremely low frequency magnetic fields in the rear seats of the electric vehicles. Radiation Protection Dosimetry.
    In the electric vehicles (EVs), children can sit on a safety seat installed in the rear seats. Owing to their smaller physical dimensions, their heads, generally, are closer to the underfloor electrical systems where the magnetic field (MF) exposure is the greatest. In this study, the magnetic flux density was measured in the rear seats of 10 different EVs, for different driving sessions. We used the measurement results from different heights corresponding to the locations of the heads of an adult and an infant to calculate the induced electric field (E-field) strength using anatomical human models. The results revealed that measured a dose amount

      @adoreslaurel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@guitarbackingtracks4386 Well now you have just "Mozzed" yourself, But did that spare cost you in fuel consumption?. I don't know where you live but down under we have very large distances between anywhere you can get service of any kind. I have supplied my son with a ford falcon rim fitted with the correct size tyre [205x60x16] as he does a lot of country driving in his job. The so called "space saver" [it doesn't], there is no space to be saved, is a silly little skinny thing 37mm less in overall diameter, which would make for a lop sided run. If one had the model with the "on Demand" diff, it would probably result in the destruction of the internals if fitted to the rear, and if fitted to the front, God help us in a panic stop, they should ban these stupid things.

    • @guitarbackingtracks4386
      @guitarbackingtracks4386 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      john brown jinxed perhaps ;-) oh you guys are an exception, if fact you could do with another spare on the roof, you get a puncture it could be weeks before anyone found you! It’s easy to forget that some folks live in vast countries, and of course that needs to be taken into consideration. I’d hope that these days on decent roads with good quality tyres the chances of a total destruction of a tyre on a car is rare, a puncture form a nail would be the most likely, in which case the repair kit would get you out of trouble. I’m not sure that you could even squeeze in a skinny wheel, so for you guys it’s not practical.

    • @adoreslaurel
      @adoreslaurel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@guitarbackingtracks4386 Fortunately our Kona's have room for a full size spare, just get rid of the odds and sods tray over the space, it's my sons car, I keep a repair kit in my old Mazda 323, you can drive for a long time with a nail in a tyre but when it starts to rust then you get a leak.

    • @stevewallace1117
      @stevewallace1117 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ammo Asian car makers are getting rid of the spare... Why? (1) the patch kit works (2) you after never far from a tire dealership and (3) saves weight. Even the new Prius doesn't have a spare tire.
