    Get used PEM at junkyards th-cam.com/video/3a1MUPMLTG0/w-d-xo.html
    PEM locations (see pinned comment for XC90) th-cam.com/video/ryxNLIcxVHM/w-d-xo.html
    I suggest discarding the metal retaining piece & screw.
    Just attach the connector and slide the PEM on the tank bracket (by feel), it will stay in place very well.
    Forum www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/
    Also careful with the Fuel pressure sensor screw (FPS) if there is one: the small T25 torx screw can be stuck and hard to turn, may even snap. Use only a T25 socket placed correctly and try giving small kicks to release it. Try spraying 1-2 weeks in advance with PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench, and go gently. If it snaps, the fuel rail will need replaced.

      What do you mean by snap? As in snap off the screw?

      @Dalton Hagler Yes, if the screw head shears off. May also try rotating it using locking pliers.

    Good vid, good info. I'd like to add 2 things:
    1. You admitted not knowing exactly what the PEM does.
    As I understand it, the PEM acts like a meter; graduating the amount of fuel the fuel pump sends based upon the engine RPMs.
    I.E. more RPMs, more fuel demand, more fuel sent / less RPMs, less fuel demand, less fuel sent.
    My 2005 Volvo XC90 does not have a fuel return system found on most engine fuel rails; so a fuel pump which sends too much fuel to the rail with no way to bring back the excess fuel to the fuel tank would cause a negative issue.
    2. With regards to releasing the fuel pressure prior to removing the FSP:
    My Volvo has a Schrader valve (same type of part you'd find when you put air into your bicycle or car tire) which is located beside the fuel filter on the right side just in front of the rear tire on the underbody of the vehicle. There should be another 'tire' valve on the engine fuel rail, used to test the fuel pressure at the rail and injectors; but I haven't had to use that one yet so I can't confirm.
    To release the pressure within the fuel system, just use any small object to depress the valve stem and the fuel will be expelled - just use the same precautions you've demonstrated in your vid for catching the fuel and not getting it in your eyes!
    You could, in theory, use the fuel rail valve to release any air prior to initial 'priming' of the fuel system prior to start up - but usually the air gets forced out during the cranking process.

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ATTENTION; before you start replacing parts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Check the grounds from the pump to the body . The black wire coming out of the pump connection is your ground. Follow it till it goes to the body bolt. The body bolt is where 90% of the issue is. The threaded bung is PAINTED and the terminal is sitting on this lousy connection. remove the bolt and scrape or wire brush the bung in the body clean. Clean the terminal and tighten the bolt. I suggest adding an additional ground wire to insure a proper ground connection.
    Things will work again especially if you have intermittent pump failures or no start issues.
    I just went through all of this just to find I have bad body grounds to the pump and fuel pump gauge unit
    Do the same with the fuel pump gauge module.'
    THIS IS THE MOST EASIEST SOLUTIONS,
    I hope I can save you alot of headaches by this personal solution.

    Just to add my experience here: I had fuel issues on my 17yr old S60 T5. I changed the sensor on the rail since it was easy to access and cheap but still had issues going uphill on open throttle. Also had the P0089 at random start ups. I changed the Fuel pump and issue solved.

      Worth just pulling it from above the tank (if it's located there), and just tap it on the side to make drop those corrosion bits inside - otherwise these land ring on the control board and fries it. I also like to spread some silicone slightly around the metal cooling plate, I think at some point water leaks inside where it meets the plastic cover

      Maybe yours uses a relay rather than PEM. At least, that's my suspicion especially since it lacks a fuel rail pressure sensor.

    Thanks for all your work and videos. Very helpful. I just purchased a 2006 V70 turbo with 168K miles, all service performed at the Volvo dealership from date of purchase. I first noticed a sudden hesitation at about 80mph. I thought fuel filter or bad gas. Then It happened again about 35-40mph the car would hesitate..again I thought fuel filter. This has happened several times in the last week since I purchased the car.. this video sounds like my problem. Your thoughts?

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would first perhaps think fuel pressure sensor (FPS) if there is one at the fuel rail. Of course, this is only one of the possibilities, so worth also getting the error codes read then asking at forums such as www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/ Again, I would first try to investigate. If you need parts, Fcpeuro is a good start in the US (not all their brands are good) www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All three items may cause that. FPS and PEM will also cause intermitted lack of power. My guess is the fuel pump is overheating - will happen when running with the gas tank on low for long time. Some models had a fuel pump relay on the CEM that would overheat because of the pump, and disconnect for a few minutes. Look up for my video "fuel pump relay". Try having the tank over 1/2 full see if it happens again, if it's no longer stalling it's probably a worn pump (gets better cooled by the extra gas in the tank). The pump sits inside a cup with gas, but if the tank is always very low, this cup doesn't manage to cool down the pump, and the pump starts wearing

    Hello! I drive a 2004 S60 No turbo! I was having an issue where I would stall out if I turned or braked too hard. I read that there was a recall on the FPS, so replaced that, and it still stalled at a stop sign. I only have codes for my catalytic converter and map sensor, and I'm not sure that either of them are my bigger issue. What do you think?

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      How many km/miles? The first thing I would do is cleaning inside the throttle body - easy to do on these non turbo, I have a video on my channel. Clean especially near the hinges of the flap. May also try cleaning the MAF small wires with some MAF spray or even very gently with a little brush. You may also have a large vacuum leak, inspect the vacuum pump switch, and the seal at the brake pedal plunger (also videos on the channel). Also, may try to open the throttle body (4 metal clips) and put some synthetic grease inside, on the black gears - I shall do a video on this soon. For the MAP sensor, remove it from underneath the front cross member (it's close to the hood latch and also has a small hose to the intake), undo the hose, then such with mouth on the hose end - it should feel like something opens inside. This should unstuck the sensor.

    Hi! Has a 2003 Volvo V70 2.5T AWD. When I run with the pedal at the bottom without kickdown and reach 3500-4000RPM, the RPM goes down again about 500RPM and then goes up again as normal.
    Could this FPS/PEM unit be the problem?

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you have the Marelli throttle body? (google up for pictures). Otherwise, can't really tell, if in doubt, may source a new FPS from Fcp and a used PEM from Ebay, each for about $50. The FPS needs a bit of lube to install (so the seal doesn't get chipped), I think I have a video somewhere, with the fuel rail www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-fuel-pressure-sensor-map-sensor-0261230110#fitment

    Would that be a fault with the Fuel Pressure Sensor do you think ?

    Can you please help me. I have a 2008 s60 and since i parked it at home the other day it wont start anymore. I have had no problems with stalling or anything else, the car ran perfect but now it cranks but no start. I have checked both the place you show and in the trunk for the PEM but its not there(i have seen in other videos where its supposed to be in the trunk). I live in a place where there the tow truck cannot pick up the car so its a big problem.

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try first jump start the battery, even if it's cranking. You can bring a good battery near the trunk and connect both poles, have the ignition key in POS II with the headlights on. If it starts, may want to verify the battery and perhaps remove the alarm siren fuse so it's doesn't cause a current drain. Then make sure you have enough gas in the tank, if it shows near 1/4 sometimes the gauge is inaccurate especially if the car is on an incline. To check for fuel pressure place a piece of paper towel on the valve at the fuel rail, then depress see if a jet of fuel pours out - watch your eyes. I'm not aware of the late PEM locations

      @@Peppermint1 thank you for the great advice peppermint. i tried with another battery and still no start. i filled the tank to half and it didnt help. as far as fuel pressure goes i must admit that i cannot say for sure, there is some gas coming out but i dont know if it is enough. i have never worked on cars before. i checked and replaced all relevant fuses but no fuses were blows. it turns out that my car does not have a PEM at all. Now im gonna buy a new bosch FPS and fuel pump and replace the fuel pump relay under the dash that you show in one of your videos. also gonna put in new genuine spark plugs because i had them changed a few weeks ago with some aftermarket ones when the car was at a service. i have since read that volvos dont like aftermarket plugs. i hope this fixes my problem or i will have to take out the CEM and i really dont wany to do that. thank you

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nikt2482 For the CEM, I have a video how to look at corrosion before replacing it. For the fuel pump, I shall soon upload a video, but careful when lowering the new pump inside the tank, it will have a long hose attached to it (which goes to the other side and must be pulled with a wire through the tank), when the pump is lowered, the hose may kink (bend) right under the pump and will cause intermittent fuel starvation. Keep pulling on the hose from the other access hole while lowering the pump, so the hose doesn't bend

      The 2001 doesn't have PEM and FPS. You may have the outside filter - I think only the metal fuel tanks have inside non replaceable filter. Careful with the disconnect, it can get stuck from dirt. Can't tell about the pump.. Once the car is running, try measuring the fuel pressure with an OBD scanner, should see around 55-60psi. I would try make sure first all small and power wires at the starter don't have damage, look closely at the small wire to the coolant temp sensor connector (near the thermostat), grounds around the engine (one wire behind near coolant reservoir). There is also a fuel pump relay on the CEM, see my channel. If all checks fine, may think at the pump, not easy to remove under the rear seats with two access holes and a hose in between the pump modules, I should upload soon a video
