  • If you love to draw with graphite, why not accent your sketches with some watercolor. They work just peachy together and can make for some cool drawings.

    You’re just a fantastic artist and teacher. My big question is this: What kind of non-color pencil is least likely to smear when confronted ted with water color?

    You have given me permission (again) to follow what I am into. Saying this is about the “pencil” sketch in several ways frees me. I started with pencil sketches then moved into a purist attitude toward watercolor where I eliminated the pencil completely and went ALL watercolor. Now I’m doing both but I’ve begun to enjoy mixing graphite pencil sketches with watercolor washes. Thank you for letting me know this is an okay path. This piece is outstandingly beautiful. Thanks for the links. I just filled in my first Bee watercolor sketchbook and followed your links to a new size, and the other company you like, and the woodless pencils too. Thank you.

    I really appreciate this technique, especially when most water colorist talk about how seeing the pencil lines underneath the painting is a real big No-No. I guess it depends on the look you're going for, but like I said I really appreciate this technique a lot thank you so much for sharing

    Wow! This is just what I’ve been looking for. I’ve done a couple of pencil drawings that I wanted to color and didn’t have a clue what medium I could use on top of the graphite, if any. I was afraid it would make a muddy mess. I’m still afraid, but I think I’ll give it a try. Thanks, love your instruction and your work.

    What a great idea! I have always loved the art of Claudia Nice. She first draws with pen and ink, then uses either watercolors or colored inks to create her works. I had thought about trying it with pencil, but worried if I would ruin a piece by learning the hard way. I never seem to be patient enough to use my brain and try something out first! LOL Recently I have purchased Derwent Graphitint pencils and am slowly learning how to use them. In case anyone doesn't know, they are watercolor pencils that come in earthy tones, due to them being made of water soluble graphite. I have also recently purchased some regular water soluble graphite pencils and am eager to see what can be made from them. Great video! Glad I found you!

    I actually love the strathmore visual wc journal. Keep in mind I am just an intermediate here. But as far as sketchbooks go I think in europe you can't beat the price of the visual wc journal and hahnemuelle wich both retail under and around 10 euro: Free tip for packing parents: Dont buy your kids the cheap wc paper if you want them to apreciate their art rather then to get frustrated. Hahnemuelle retails from 7 euro up to 20 and the visual journal is only ten. I know its more then kid art supplies: but enjoying art only works if your basics are ok. You dont like your work when painting on crappy paper either :) as far as paints go: my kid loves to play with my wc pencils. At 13 he still be like ',waaah thats like magic. That is wood. Wood don't become paint. I gaveup on explaining that lol ( Autism is a Hard one to change perspective wise... so Im like, jeaaah sure is kid,grin ) my kid is still over the moon when he can use my art stuff. But he also knows he cant touch my schmincke's or senneliers. He can touch my white nights but did not do so yet. Bristol Mixed media hazzard: Dont get the Vellum if you want to combine it with wet medium. And I just adore your portrait sketching style steve, I stink but I just keep on plunging at it just because you make it look so darn easy lol

    • @joyfulldj
      @joyfulldj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Graphite can be a fun for a grisaille :) What I personally find to be one of the most hard portraits to draw are faces with dark skintones. Not Persay due to the skintone,as that is a fairly basic mix. But what I love in most of their picture reference is that sence of pride. And most poc have that: even when they are not aware of it. But that, I think is the most hard things to capture in a painting or a drawing: you look at white faces that also have that sence of pride,it is still different to capture in a picture, if you get my point;specially if you go realism,rather then impressionism. When I don't get that sence of pride right my colors seem like a failed average dutch blackface paintjob (dont ask lol whole new debate there )

    Great video, and amazing artwork! So, what I’m wondering is the paint doesn’t make the pencil run? I know you mentioned briefly the graphite may move a bit, but I’m just afraid it’s going to make the pencil run completely 🤔

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. Graphite doesn't run like watercolor. If it's a water soluble graphite pencil then yes, but thats a different type pencil. However graphite is powdery and some of that sits on the paper surface. The softer the graphite is, the more it might smear. Some of that graphite gets picked up and spread with water. Most of it stays put though.

    • @phylliscampbell2325
      @phylliscampbell2325 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What is “workable fixative” and is that something you normally do on watercolor or just because it was pencil? Beginner, here. Not sure what I’m doing. Lol

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A spray that "fixes", seals or stops the pencil from smearing. Its called "workable" because you can spray a drawing then keep drawing. Used usually in pencil drawing or sometimes pastel. Watercolor, however, does NOT do well on top of workable fixative so wait until all the watercolor has been added before fixing.

  • @donivonwoodfineart
    @donivonwoodfineart ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just stumbled onto this, and I can't believe that I never considered watercolor over my graphite work. This is amazing, thanks so much! One question though: How will watercolor work over a graphite drawing that has a workable fixative applied? I figure that may reduce the graphite bleeding.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most Fix isn’t friendly to watercolor unfortunately. It affects the absorption. There is a casein based fix that works better called Spectrafix.

    • @donivonwoodfineart
      @donivonwoodfineart ปีที่แล้ว

      So would you say that would reduce the graphite bleeding then? This is the single reason I've dismissed the whole idea of watercolor washes on/with graphite.@@mindofwatercolor

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@donivonwoodfineart yes, but you’ll have a somewhat grayed painting anyway whether the graphite spreads or not. That’s the beauty of this technique imo.

    Why I did not make this connection before I do not know. Your comment about the relationship of the white of the paper coming thru was spot on. I love to pencil sketch and my favorite challenging art form is watercolor. Trying to master the white of the paper with my pencil or watercolor is my favorite struggle. With a pencil however I can erase, thus control. Watercolor truely has a “mind of its own”. For some odd reason I find the challange more appealing.

    Have you ever tried using light layers of workable fixative to seal the graphite so it won’t move when wet and adding watercolor on top ?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes but the standard type ruins the tooth and absorbency of the paper. The Casein based Spectrafix seems to work though. I'm still testing that.

      @@mindofwatercolor thank you , it’s been kinda hard to get this question answered. 🙏 I’ve always loved the look of dark graphite but i dislike the muddiness you can get when it lifts.

    I really loved this video. I like this style and the grafite held up for you. For me not so much. I think I get my brush too wet. I try not to but it's hard to judge. Thanks for the demonstration. Beautiful painting or should I say drawing.

    I have been pleased with those Strathmore journals, overall. They can take a beating, and the watercolor one doesn't pill up when you work it.

    Thank you for an outstanding tutorial. Can fixative be used prior to adding color?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not standard fixative. It affects the ability of the paper to absorb. You can use Spectra Fix Degas fixative which is a waterbased, casein, alternative. Watercolor seems to work ok over that.

    Love this video! The faces you do utterly amaze me! I actually did the same thing last week. But I did a very detailed drawing then printed it on watercolor paper and painted. I have a matching pair now and love them together. I'd post a pic but dont know how! Lol!

    This was great, Steve. I do quite a bit of under drawing with my watercolor painting, but never have used watercolor over a drawing. I can't wait to try it!

      Oh my goodness, have I ever! I was trying to figure out where everyone was coming from... I can't thank you enough Steve, that's incredibly generous of you!! In less than a week I've almost tripled my subscribers... I hope I get to shake your hand one of these days! Please let me know if you make it out to Arizona for a visit, it'd be a hoot to get out and sling some paint together!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh good! I was hoping so. No thanks needed. I had generous TH-camrs help me out when I first started and its time to pay it forward. Plus, its no effort when you're excited to share a talented artist such as yourself with other viewers. As for AZ., yes, I will be actually. Maybe I can meet you, not sure. I have an Uncle that lives in Scottsdale and my wife's sister lives in Glendale. We are planning a 40th anniversary trip to the Grand Canyon next May. We'll see. Maybe a brief stop for coffee or something on the way from Phoenix to GC. Prescott is about midway am I right?

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's right! Prescott is centrally located in AZ. I've love to have you out to the studio if you have the time... but if you find you're crunched for time, I'm happy to meet you somewhere. Let me know and I'll make it happen =) Paint on!
