Lots of rules errors though :P
1. Monsters with ranged attacks move as little as possible to be able to attack.
2. Feedback loop doesn’t work like that. It gives shield against all attacks during the current round.
3. Only add new guards on odd numbered rounds.
4. Summons aren’t controlled. They work like monsters that do move +0, attack +0. Except (of course) it’s an ally of all players and an enemy of all monsters.
5. Stamina potion gets back cards from discard pile, not from lost pile.
6. Mind control doesn’t make him be on your side. It only makes him attack as if he was on your side.
7. When you shuffle in blessings and curses, you don’t shuffle the discard back in to the deck.
8. Items reset when you do a long rest, not when you do a short rest.
9. Monsters choose targets based on fewest steps to attack. First tie breaker is closeness and second is lowest initiative.
10. FYI. The recommended scenario level is half the average character level rounded up.

and to add to the pedantry: 11. You can't consume an element on the same turn you create one (but monsters and your allies can).
It was a bit painful watching so many rules get butchered, but also amusing. Those are just about all the errors I caught as well. Also they seemed to forget to subtract shield when the enemies were shielding, and they didn't apply disadvantage when doing ranged attacks against adjacent enemies... Not that anyone's counting. ;-)
I would argue that the butchering of rules IS a core part of playing and progressing through Gloomhaven. You will either get better or throw up you hands in disgust :)

I would really love to play this game, but since the average life expectancy for a male in the USA is only 78 years... I just don't think there will be enough time to squeeze this in.
I ran into that problem when I wanted to play ASL and Starfleet Battles, but then I learned that I could bathe in the blood of young virgins to maintain my youth and it's been smooth sailing ever since!

I love SU&SD but to be fair to the game, they were playing really, really slowly. My group can normally get through an average scenario like this one in 30-45 minutes.
@@MrRichardMoran Yeah. I love them both, but if I had someone in my group playing as slow as Mat... the other tre players would inform that player tp get the **** on with it :D

Solid game. We had a group play through over the course of a year. Ending felt a little weak but overall it was a fun experience. Strongly recommend the game.

Never been so torn about purchasing a game before: The RPG geek in me is screaming out for the adventure and depth, but i'm also a touch overwhelmed by the length and commitment!
I know this is old and way too late, but the archer should still attack characters next to him, but at disadvantage (meaning they draw two attack modifiers and pick the worst of the two)
Actually no, an ranged unit will choose focus on the closed person and then try and put itself at optimal position for max damage output while also moving as little as possible.
So if a ranged unit focus on someone within melee range then they will if possible move one away so they do not have disadvantage and then preform their attack.
We played with the same rule as you mention for a while but it turned out wrong.
General rule for monsters are that they are lazy and move as little as possible but will always try to do maximum damage and take minimum damage (they they will rather move around a trap and not attack for a turn then go through a trap to be able to do an attack. Unless the only way is through a trap then they will take the damage) this game is mental to learn 🤣
@@chrisedinburgh5051 yes, but my point was that if the monster is unable to move, it can still attack. Their implication was that they could rig the system by forcing the archer into melee range in a way that it could not move and it would be unable to attack. My point was that even if the archer could not get out of melee ranger, it could still attack.

You guys did make that look intreaguing, and Quins getting punished for deciding to go a bit off script is really fun. I don't know if it's for me, but it's nice to know that it's out there. On Steam maybe, but still out there.

It's sad to hear that Paul is leaving. He's always made my favorite parts of the videos.
ADDENDUM: you can't move through enemies at all. It makes jump and flying way more valuable.
ADDENDUM 2: you can play the bottom half first when you pick your cards as long as you play the top half of the next one.
There was no lack of goofiness and entertainment between this segment and the full stream, always great videos from an outstanding team!

I would be all for a small series on this game. It would be interesting to watch.
At 9:55, Quinns asks if you have to the top action of a card, then the bottom action of another card. You can play the actions of the cards in any order. Might be miscommunication between the question and the answer.
Classic rules mistake. I had a player get through, like, 8 scenarios before he realized he was only playing top first. . Or, I think we let him know that you can do them in any order every few missions, but he'd fall back into it periodically. Actually, he was always resolving his "leading" card first

We've almost finished the campaign and unlocked almost all the boxes, yet the Spellweaver is still the character I most fondly remember. Rock solid character mechanics.
Recently got into board games, watching this makes me want to get it but none i know plays them! Plus id get confused so much
I passed up purchasing this game in store the ONE and only time I've ever seen it in stock and I still regret it. I told myself I was passing on it to wait for the then-just-announced PC version. Now I've been hearing the PC version isn't going to be a recreation of the board game, but it's own beast loosely based on it. If I ever stumble on this in stores again, I will buy it without hesitation.
Buy this game. It will consume your time and you will love it.
There are multiple eBay auctions for a reasonable price. I think you should be able to hunt down a copy. We just had a game of it today and it was a blast.
A few months ago the gaming store I go to for D&D said they were taking preorders for it with a deposit (I paid the full amount then and there, not taking any chances hehe). We're hoping it comes in before the end of December like they were told it would.

Just for info for Quinns: The game is NOT fiddly with cards (you are actually losing 10x more time with that app) and is NOT bad with 4 people. Me and three more are actually on our 40th (more or less) session this week!
Re: 4players -- I'd actually recommend 4p Gloomhaven as a dramatic improvement over 2p Gloomhaven. It actually plays just about as quickly four-player as it does two-player, *once everyone has learned the game*. With a persistent playgroup and four people dividing up all the admin tasks equally, a scenario typically takes about 2-3 hours, which is the same length of time it took us to play 2 player. The rule prohibiting discussion of card names limits planning chat and makes everything keep moving, too, and a lot of the campaign rules (oak donations, personal quests, etc.) are scaled better for 4 players.
I love getting some insights into Gloomhaven, because I'm still afraid of that big ol' box.

If you like crunchy games, you will love this game. Rough edges and all.
Paul was my favourite (don't tell the others). I think I might have to go and watch all the first series again to cheer myself up.
A good organiser will make a huge difference. There's no perfect solution - even with the size of the box, there just isn't enough volume inside to fit everything and still have everything separated out neatly.
Things to look for:
- whether or not condition tokens are separated out by type. A friend's otherwise perfectly adequate foamcore insert has a single box for all the condition tokens, and we spend a lot of time digging through it to find the right ones.
- whether or not component trays have lids/covers or will be well-covered by other trays while stored. Depending on whether you'll be transporting the game any distance, or storing it on its side or similar, a good lid (or equivalent) can save you a lot of time re-sorting things.
- how well labelled it is. My Meeple Realty insert ("Gloomhaven Town") labels the trays of monster standees and terrain overlay tiles so you can tell what is where without having to remove the lids, or go through the overlay tiles, flipping them over to check the backs.
- how flexible the card storage is. several decks gain and lose cards during the campaign, so some sort of movable divider (or plenty of spare space) is indicated. Generally, the card storage is a weakness of most inserts I've looked at - which is reasonable, since it's a hard problem.
1:36:00 and that's why you draw when you have Frost Armor. Frost Armor would have absorbed the crit ;) If the card had been a miss it wouldn't have ticked your armor (because you took 0 damage: there's nothing to cancel out).
My partner and I are playing it through. And we definitely have moments of pause. But I don’t find we spend as much time deciding what we do as the lads do here. This game absolutely lends itself to AP but it really doesn’t seem to take as long as it would seem.

I must have watched this play through half a dozen times, and I’ve only just twigged that Clark’s name for the orchid spellweaver “Paphiopedilum” is just a random weird name, it’s actually a genus of slipper orchids.
Oh my god, I spotted the card order thing the first time you said it and had typed about 15 words pointing it out before I remembered that I was watching a recording 🙃. The subsequent 2 hours or so were then incredibly frustrating with the finale(?) being extra nail biting. I was so relieved / completely devastated when you managed to make it in the end / came so close! (I take spoilers incredibly seriously 😂)
So far, the most exciting part of this video has been watching the beer cam to see if it foams over.

1:17 Trap placement, summoning, and spawning require an empty hex (also defined in rule book).
At a recent game night, a friend asked me how many of my games I bought largely due to SUSD. I hadn't realized that so much of my collection I probably would not have bought without these guys, and I love them for that.
This video has had the opposite effect. I was curious about this game, but now I know it just is not my kind of game.
That's just as important, I think, to know which games not to buy. In theory some games may appear to be massively appealing to oneself, but then in practice they would never get a place at the old table... For me it's Twilight Imperium... and probably this one as well.
To be fair, this video is so riddled with rule errors that it can only give you a very vague notion of what the game is like.
I feel like seeing the cards would make this so much better. maybe a couple cameras on the side of each player?

I bought this game based on Matt's review of it. Still haven't gotten to PLAY it with anyone. Last attempt was at Thanksgiving when I was told by my sisters that "We need the table for dinner!" which didn't happen for three hours.... Something tells me they don't want nieces or nephews or boyfriends/girlfriends of those nieces/nephews to associate with me and find out Uncle is not exactly what they advertised him to be.
At 1:35:00 mark wouldn’t he want to see if the enemy draws a miss so it would save his frost armor a bit more instead of just discarding his frost armor card!?
Great job on the video. I love this game so much. I play it with 3 other friends and it's not too bad for the speed once you get the hang of it and what each role we need to play is. We also play with perma death in our campaign and in our last dungeon we experienced TPK (total party kill). I was a level 7 Scoundrel, as I had yet to finish my character's story. Sad moment, but so fun to play a truly challenging game. I'll be playing a spell weaver when we play our next session, which nobody has played yet in our campaign, so thanks for the preview. I'll play it properly unlike Quinns did of course =P

@@madhawaiian9732Hahaha, I had someone tell me that their group could complete a game of it in 2 hours. I laughed and laughed... my groups fastest play of it was 8 hours, because someone was having a good rolls and good card draw day.
We playing with 4 regularly and it's fine. It actually helps in creating cool combos. Though, we've played for a bit and so it flows easily for us since we know what we are doing. The early times playing.... not so much.

An internship playing/reviewing board games sounds wayyyyy more appealing than my grad program. Pick someone good! I expect nothing less than Paul.
Game is slow but experience and the appdo make it faster. The first time I played it (with a friedn who had already played through Gloom and Jaws), we did the first 7 scenarios in Jaws, in a 10am-6pm session.
More like Matt was horrible at remembering to do things and kept wasting time for no reason.

Mind thief is really more of a dps melee character, imo. those pulls aren't necessarily bad at all.
She's very versatile. I played her as a melee/ranged dps with a bit of CC but depending on your card and gear choices you could specialize on either or even become an off-tank with multiple summons that you support with heals.
Those pulls are definitely meant for ranged attacks so you (or your allies) can hit them with melee right after. I'd still say they are pretty bad because you do not know when they will come up so you cannot rely on them to do a shoot/stab combo or pull someone into a trap.

you added pulls because it allows you to use a ranged attack to pull an enemy into a melee attack. Since the Mindtheif has a good bottom ranged attack it is a great combo maker

are you not supposed to pick your initiative ahead of time putting the card on top face down before flipping over? or is this rule slightly different than jaws of the lion? Loving it so far but looking at picking up this GIANT box.

Lol how is it surprising people have finished gloomhaven? I got the 2nd print and play fairly casually. (Once every few weeks) and ive done 1 full campaign and 2 campaigns 80% ish of the way through. The campaign main quest line is actually really short.
Did they mess up the recommended level rule? Maybe I'm not remembering right but 9 health per guard seems like a lot...
No, seems correct. I think Matt is level 3 and Quinns level 2. Half their average level is 1.25 so scenario level 2 (as you can see in the app, bottom right) is right. Those guards are pretty tough.

They can but they will move out of melee range as to avoid having disadvantage. There is a great video you can watch called Gloomhaven Monster AI - Rules Quiz Questions 1-10. This video will help clear some things up that many play groups do not do correctly.
@@zillachris yes but an archer will only do that if the can move on there turn otherwise they will just attack(if they can) with the disadvantage
