Jean Dubuffet, a highly influential artist of the 20th century, was born in Le Havre in 1901 and lived and worked in Paris. He died in 1985.
In the fall of 1973 we had an opportunity to visit Dubuffet in his studio. He was at work on a detail for his musical theater piece Coucou Bazar, which he saw as an animated painting. Performers in costumes resembling figures in his paintings and sculptures would make small gestures which steadily changed the composition of the image on stage. Machines or 'practicables', as he called them, set in motion larger objects such as gates and walls. He created 175 'practicables' for Coucou Bazar. The piece which had a successful premiere at New York's Guggenheim earlier that year, alongside a retrospective of Dubuffet's painting and sculpture, was about to open at the Grand Palais under the auspices of the annual Festival d'Autumne.
Dubuffet went through periods of great doubt about his art, stopping to paint altogether for years, joining instead his family's wine business. He returned to art for good in 1942, working in an impersonal and primitive manner, becoming more and more influenced by art that had no connection to mainstream art, for which he coined the term ART BRUT.
This kind of art, often created by children, prisoners or mental patients in asylums, inspired Dubuffet to keep intellectual concerns out of his work. He amassed a large and insightful collection of Art Brut which he kept in a separate location not far from his studio. He insisted on showing it to us.
Years later he donated this collection to the city of Lausanne which built a museum for it, the Musée de l'Art Brut.
