    Please notice this video it shows you that the braking is more important than the downshifting and people forget about this when going from auto to stick. These 2 videos also show you same thing except with corners, focus on the braking to slow the car down not downshifting:

    I don't really "need" these videos, as I learned to drive a manual about 15 years ago. However, they're still really helpful, as it's also been about 7 or 8 years since I'd driven one until recently. Thank you for these, for me and for anyone who's just learning for the first time. it's like riding a bicycle, once you learn, you never really forget. But there are little things I couldn't quite remember, and maybe my parents didn't teach me everything. They did well enough for sure, but this is a nice refresher.

    Not sure if it was mentioned but it's extremely important in my opinion to break first and then clutch, specially in situations where you need to do a hard stop. If you're used to clutching first it wouldn't be instinctive to break quickly.

    The best way is to brake first, then put the clutch in just before the car is ready to stall out. This occurs usually around 750-1000 rpm. This way you can continue using engine braking and reduce the load on your brakes, and while saving on gas. Also in some jurisdictions it is illegal to coast with your foot pressing the clutch (you are effectively in neutral). Also certain components in manual transmission have a mean lifetime before repair which is proportional to the amount of time your foot is pressing the clutch. Therefore the goal is to be pressing the clutch as least as possible.
    Downshifiting for sole intent of stopping should not be done by beginners or commercial cars. It should only be done for heavy trucks and race cars. Even then it might be illegal to downshift in certain jurisdictions to down shift due to noise pollution laws. Also downshifting puts strain on your transmittion parts. Brakes are a lot cheaper than transmission parts.

    • @Mystxry
      @Mystxry 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      how does downshifting put strain on your transmission parts? also, does pushing in the clutch while coasting/braking put strain on your clutch?

    • @shinobu02
      @shinobu02 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mystxry think of downshifting as trying to slow yourself down while running downhill. You want to slow down so you start putting massive amounts of energy into your legs to fight gravity and to make sure you don't trip and fall under your own speed. Breaks are a wear item, the transmission isn't supposed to be, cheaper to replace brake pads than your clutch and transmission because you wanna downshift for no real purpose.

    • @yourspider383
      @yourspider383 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mystxry Downshifting wears out the clutch plates if you don't execute it 100% perfectly (using perfect rev-matching). Since it is so difficult to perfect it, it is advisable to not use the technique. Unless you're an expert race car driver or heavy truck driver, I wouldn't do it. For pushing in the clutch while coasting: Every second your clutch is engaged, you are putting strain on the throw-out bearing.

    If yall need like a pointer as to where and when to shift. This helped me when i was learning:
    Press the clutch when going slower than 800RPM’s depending on the car. at 1000 is a safer bet tho, when you are comming to a stop its better to keep the clutch pedal out as long as possible to not be coasting.
    Shift from first to second at like 2,5k rpm at roads and as early as you please on streets.
    2nd to 3rd and so on at like 2 thousand. Mabye slightly later at highways, uphill etc. and downshifting at like 1500 to 1200 rpms.

    This video is more informative than many of the ones I have on my Manual Driving Playlist. Everyone I came across is saying you have to Rev Match, and Heel toe. I spent hrs looking at videos on how they do both techniques, and though I understood some of it, I didn't get the point of doing all that, or whether is necessary. Most ppl replied back saying if you're going 80-100mphs you would definitely need to know these things... But why on earth would I drive that fast? Can anyone enlighten me on whether it is needed to know those things, or is things I should pick up as a learn to drive first? I also saw them say those rev matching and heel toeing saves the car? Can't I just apply the brake and down shift as you were normally doing without the car jerking a bit?

    people like to downshift coming to a stop for audible exhaust/engine noise and engine braking. I do it in my Mustang because it sounds great and makes me happy, even though I know it's more wear than using brake pads. Having said that, it's an automatic paddle shift manual mode that rev matches, so that should mean there is less clutch wear than user-error in a manual using heel-toe.

    Downshifting for stop signs to me is based on how fast you're going and for better engine braking. If you're in 5th gear on a 55mph road going 55mph and a stop sign is coming up, I would brake until I reach a certain speed, downshift to say 3rd gear, brake, clutch in and stop.

    I got a question for anybody that knows about manual cars because my question is..when I got to a stop sign or if I’m gonna go to a red traffic light in 6th gear can I really press the break and then go to 1st gear with no problem by that I mean will it hurt my car?

    • @moyadavis
      @moyadavis ปีที่แล้ว

      In sixth gear you're going pretty fast so press the break down slowly and as your rpms go down you can downshift. Think about it, do you really think it's good to press down on the break at 70 mph?

  • @petershen1794
    @petershen1794 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The reason for downshifting before a stop is to minimize the braking distance until a stop, but if that's the case it's only needed on the main road driving with a speed like 70 km/h, totally unnecessary at a local road.

    So if I’m in 4th gear and I’m coming to a complete stop, is it bad to break and when I get to about 1500rpm then clutch in and out into neutral if I stop within a few seconds? Or is it recommended to clutch in then break and then go into neutral until you begin moving again

    I have a question. So if I am heading for a stop sign or red light and I am in 4th gear - if I want to ease of the accelerator and then put into neutral then break to come to a stop. Do I need to press clutch in when going from straight 4th gear to neutral? Or can I just ease off the accelerator and put into neutral without pushing the clutch, and not causing any damage to the transmission? Advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    So I'm just learning stick and coming to a stop if my biggest problem. So if I'm in 3rd it's okay to put the clutch in and come to a stop then putting it in either N or 1st ?

    Great video! I just have a question? When you say"clutch up and give a little gas" how much up on the clutch are you going before the give a little gas? to the biting point? or you know how much you letting off the clutch by the way your personal car feels and how smooth it should feel?

    Quick question: You said it doesn't make sense to you to downshift for a stop, but what if you're in a situation where you can't really use your brakes like you would normally, like say, if the road is icy or covered in a lot of snow? Isn't downshifting useful for slowing down the car then? I don't mean in place of braking entirely, I'd still pump them to slow down as much as I could without losing control first.

      I feel if you are familiar with the areas you should slow down or stop before coming up to your stop and then drive up to the stop vs trying to downshift for the stop. I think in this video I show that near end I say something like that th-cam.com/video/We9r3emgwQ4/w-d-xo.html but yes it is ok in those situations to experiment and know you can use it to your advantage if you feel it helps but I don't think it makes any sense in the rain or dry or even most snow except for changing your driving where you are slowing down way in advance. Also good to check if your car has ABS brakes because most cars do now a days I know older hondas it was always an option even up to 2001.

    Just curious - so would clutching in all the time before stopping wouldn't this be hard on the clutch?
    Could one clutch in put in neutral then one could let off the clutch, while using brake to the stop sign?

    • @tomnguyen8546
      @tomnguyen8546 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Holding the clutch all the way down doesn't burn or cost the clutch anything. So if you hold it down earlier it won't wear away the life of the clutch. It might wear down the spring but it's really negligible. If anything, clutching to neutral then clutching to first will cause you to wear the spring down more (still negligible) since you're going through the motions twice. Maybe over a lifetime, all those extra clutch inputs will add up but I'm not an expert. Either way, you're only engaging the clutch (not the spring) once, which is when you start from 0mph in 1st gear

    9:30 is it okay to downshift while turning your also loosing rpm. i think it makes you save fuel. staying on higher gear while turning makes you press the accelerator much longer to gain the speed for 3rd gear

    • @prettylittleravenna
      @prettylittleravenna 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on the speed your driving in. If you’re slow (second or first gear) and you brake first, your car will most likely stall. If you’re in higher gears (3rd and upwards) you can brake without the clutch, because your speed is faster.
