(19) Manual Transmission Hill Starts: Clutch Before Gas

  • This is video not for driving tests where you are not allowed to rollback. Follow whatever method your instructor is teaching. This is related to this video except for flat ground,learn to get rid of dead space • (10) Manual Transmissi... .For hills, start off giving a lot of clutch engagement so you get used to understanding what is going on. Then you try 1/2 as much clutch, then try quick 1/4 clutch, but it will still be clutch then gas. The more time you practice this slowly the quicker you will understand it and you will spend less time in the long run doing poor clutch starts.
    If your clutch engages quicker than what you see in the video then that is great let it engage quick, clutch out and go.
    Understand when you watch videos there will be all sorts of variations between cars with new clutches and worn clutches(the engagement bite point is very different)but the sequence is always the same "clutch before gas".
    Don't spend a lot of time thinking about what to do once you engage your clutch, when it grabs you need to move your foot to the gas fast but don't slam it down on the gas pedal.
    Don't hold your car on the hill using the clutch...as in don't just sit on the hill waiting for the traffic to move or light to turn green with your clutch engaged, your clutch is not a handbrake. You are either stopped with full clutch in and brake or you are going, clutch up gas,hold, go.
    Don't look at your gauges when doing hill starts. If you look at your rpm gauge you will end up not noticing your are rolling back. Look at the road and you will see even the slightest rollback movement. It is very dangerous and happens all the time!
    What do you do in this situation which everyone faces when learning stick • 996 Porsche 911 Turbo ...
    Crowd watching, cars behind you honking, people yelling things! Don't panic go to your safe space and breathe, clutch up, give gas , hold and go.
    If someone tells you to move both feet at the same time like one goes up the other goes down. Your feet are not a seesaw, they are not connected and neither is your clutch and gas. They are doing distinctly different things and if you try to move both at the same time you always be on the edge of stalling the car.
    If someone tells you to "just give gas and clutch up" ask yourself are they understanding your zero experience driving stick? Do they know you are young,old,maybe you are not that quick with your feet. Will giving gas and bringing up your clutch work for you on a steep hill as a complete new standard transmission driver? Watch if they are giving a ton of gas and bringing up their clutch because they are trying to do it quick. Will it work in tight traffic where you have to move up only 4 feet?

    Driving uphill in traffic with stick shift (no hand brake)
    th-cam.com/video/-UzpHGthlzI/w-d-xo.html
    Mustang Roll Back accident (what I was talking about at end of video-look out at road you will see roll back)
    th-cam.com/video/0jewAGL6xP0/w-d-xo.html
    Porsche in the high pressure situation, like doing a presentation in front of class.
    th-cam.com/video/Qod4tIAimMQ/w-d-xo.html
    Hopefully by the time you put yourself in this situation like the porsche you will have practiced. At that point the only thing that will cause you trouble is panicking. If you start to freak out flip the rear view mirror up so you cant see traffic behind you and try again. It almost always helps.

      I like to think I got pretty decent with hill starts but there are some hills where I stall no matter what. I wouldn't stall like that porsche did since that incline isn't even very steep. In Toronto we have some 15 degree inclines that go on for many kilometers.
      If I stall anymore, it seems to happen to me when I am going at slow speeds on bumpy roads, or if I am on an uneven hill (again, steep incline, poorly paved road). A good spot is at spadina and davenport. Almost always I end up burning my clutch or stalling the car on that hill. Something about it just makes you roll back no matter what and I have gone up steeper hills than that when they were well paved.

    in the UK we all get taught to use the hand brake, give gas, find the biting point (high driving point), hold both feet still, do observations, release hand brake and move off. Works also for steep hills. For tight parking spaces we hold it at a lower biting point or the holding point instead and use the clutch to modulate the forward speed out of the spot. Your method works for some cars that has good torque, but I have driven some petrol cars and it was so easy to stall especially with steeper hills. If at a complete stop I almost always have the handbrake applied first but if creeping along a hill I hold it just below the biting point and "nudge" the car forward using gas and the appropriate about of clutch.

      Drive Manual yes I did. I thought you were explaining it the wrong way. I misunderstood. what I do is clutch in, give it throttle (2000rpm) and ease the clutch out (I roll back a few inches but not bad) once it grabs, I let it roll about a foot of so them let it out all the way. smooth takeoff, minimal roll and no strain on the clutch

    Fantastic presentation Drive Manual. This is one aspect that separates the rookies from the seasoned drivers. Young stick shifters keep this in mind, once you "master" this aspect, you'll be able spot a rookie stick shifter a mile away. You might even laugh or have empathy for as you recall your days when you were learning.
    Just remember if you start to roll back don't panic. You be surprised that you didn't roll back as far as you thought - unless you backed into the car behind you. 😊
    Again Drive Manual fine work. As a highly experienced stick shifter, I even learn a thing or two from your videos. Keep 'em coming.

    I used to drive a stick in San Francisco and I totally agree with this method. I even used it on flat ground. It is sometimes sad to see people just rev the engine half way to the redline, pop the clutch in hope that the flywheel would get them going on a hill, then end up stalling

    Hi there. Thank you so very much for such insightful videos. I recently got my licence and I have to say that I learnt a whole lot from your videos than from my two instructors combined. Quick question on clutch balance on the a hill: As someone who practised on diesel cars, wouldn't a petrol car stall before I can get my foot on the accelerator using this sequence? I will be driving company cars (which are all petrol cars) soon, and I am worried because I know petrol cars have less torque and the engines cut out easier (and maybe sooner) than diesel. I love this sequence you are suggesting here and it has been working for me in congested junctions or slow traffic where you have to move sooner (making a use of handbrake impossible) and slowly.

    • @Brian-uq6jm
      @Brian-uq6jm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Driven both petrol (Lancer) and diesel (Astra) cars in manual transmission. Petrol cars are definitely harder on a hill than diesels cars. With diesel, it's so much harder to stall. I could use the clutch only to start a diesel car on a hill in decent speed. With a petrol car, at least the Lancer, it's harder and a lot slower to start with just the clutch (if the hill is not steep enough for you to do this). But if you've driven a manual car for some time, you should be fine, just need to get the right foot on the accelerator, nothing hard about it.

    For the people with a manual and have a car with "hill assist" ( holds the brake for an extra two seconds for you.) the manufacturer even says to not rely on it.. it will not engage depending on the steepness, and what you are doing to maneuver the vehicle can stop hill assist from helping.

    This is what I do, had to learn it myself after realizing one day that i can engage the clutch while still pressing on the brakes... Somehow I had the thought that if I engage the clutch while my foot is on the brake, it would stall the car, and that led me to have a hard time at hills where I am releasing the brake first then letting the clutch slow at the same time pressing the gas a little, that would make me roll back more than I want to and sometimes if I know someone is very close behind me I'll panic and stall.

    I'm from San Francisco, and, as you might have guessed, the grades are very steep. I drove up the hill and came to a red light. When it turned green, I kept stalling and a long queue of cars formed behind me. You mentioned using the handbrake in this type of situation, but I don't understand the sequence when trying to use it along with clutch and gas. Could you elaborate on this topic or possibly do a video about how to use handbrake from a steep hill?

  • @kylelester30

    Most detailed tutorial I ever watched in youtube. As a new driver, can I also use this method on a very steep hill e.g. dedicated parking in malls? or should I use handbrake method. the steeper the hill the more gas i have to apply correct? thanks a lot again and hope you were doing great!

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi Kyle thanks very much ok in those kinds of spots you sometimes will have to use a the handbrake it just works better and sometimes in those underground parking for example people will come close to the back of your car and the hill is short but steep you can use your hand brake. You will have to make the decision but you can never go wrong with the handbrake. You do have to give more gas the steeper it gets so at that point you just want to switch over the handbrake because since you do have to hold your clutch for a second like in the video if you are having to give 3000+ rpm gas then it is just too steep and it is hard on your clutch. But for everything else, everyday driving average hills you can do like in the video. It is good to know how to use your clutch because in many cars the handbrakes are worn and sometimes don't even work so if you don't know how to use your feet you are in trouble. If you have never tried a handbrake start it is the exact same brake you will find on any bicycle :)

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      hi because some hills are even too steep for your clutch and you may have traffic that rides your bumper. you can use your clutch on any hill but some will be so steep the car rolls back immediately very fast and if it is in a parking situation like underground parking lot or maybe a drive through where cars are behind you best to use your handbrake. But you need to make the decision what is too steep when you need to use handbrake. But you are right technically use can just use your clutch but it will be hard on your clutch in those situations.

    • @declinetostate9483
      @declinetostate9483 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In my own experience, you could bring your clutch pedal up as far as it can go before stalling and you might still slip back before you give gas if you're on a very steep hill. However, in most cases you can keep the car from moving using only the clutch before you accelerate.

    • @anpr22
      @anpr22 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The key here is release the brake in tandem with clutch so that it does not stall and go much up (engaged) that way it gives enough power for very steep slope.

    My driveway is very steep, like 45 degree angle and I always struggle to drive into the garage without having to get out of whatever gear I was in on the road to a complete stop facing the garage door up hill, then first gear drive up at like 10km/hr, which is too fast for my comfort but any slower and I can't make it up the slope without stalling or engine lugging or ride clutch at high rev.
    The worst part is, if I ever stall out half way on the slope because I messed up (or tried chance it by driving up in 2nd gear coming off the road), I can NEVER hill start in position hoping to make the final stretch. I have to slide all the way back down to the curb, face the garage door then redo from flat ground (basically gain enough speed -10km/hr -to drive up the slope all the way in). While stopped on the slope if I lift off clutch to or close to bite point, as soon as my foot is off the brake the car will rollback, fast. If I give a little more clutch like you said in this video the car will gently stall, no shake. So I'm guessing the only option is to give more gas but by that point if a car is behind me I would've hit him 2 seconds ago.
    I try to do it with handbrake, and you can tell me if I need to have my handbrake replaced because on my driveway unless the handbrake is pulled to the absolute last 3 notches on a 2011 Civic Coupe, the car will still rollback. So as you can imagine even doing it with handbrake if I don't get my clutch and gas perfect the car will roll as soon as I release handbrake even a tiny bit.
    I can do your technique in the video on any hill that isn't as steep as my driveway where clutch at near biting point is able to stop car from rolling back enough for you to get off brake and tap gas a little and it'l move forward.

    I tried this and it works! I'm a complete noob to driving stick (just bought my first manual car last week) and I can't thank you enough for this tutorial. I'm still a bit slow though and i have trouble with judging how much gas to give, but at least i didn't stall or roll back too far.
    Quick question though, does a car with a smaller displacement engine need more gas when starting on a hill? I drive a Suzuki Swift 1.4L.

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      since you just bought the car and it is only week 2 try this th-cam.com/video/xcWEIJGehXU/w-d-xo.html
      and see if it helps any or not, try with some small blips then large blips if you need more gas and if it doesn't work out then just keep doing what you are doing. It is so hard for me to tell you how your engine will react but my only advice is try a small incline almost flat ground and see how little gas you need then a little steeper incline and see how you can go up it with the least amount gas... you will notice you will have to give more gas the steeper it goes in whatever car you drive. In all of those small incline situations use the clutch before gas method like you did in this hill start video but you can do it like this (just go under the bite point...since you do not need to go to full bite point on small inclines th-cam.com/video/h9Fa1PLXuRk/w-d-xo.html . Anyway sorry can't be more help but glad this video helped you. Thanks very much for the comment!

    You need more gas depending on the size of the engine and type. In small petrol engines i.e 1 liltre your technique will cause stalling everytime.

    I can see you're driving a Honda Civic as I'm. My question is what type of engine do you have? If it's a 4 cylinder 5 speed, how many rmps are you getting let's say if you drive at 35 mph and what gear do you drive it on at 35mph???

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hello use your rpm , do you have an rpm gauge? experiment with 2900-3400 rpm. It will probaly put you in 4th if you shift at 3000rpm in 3rd at 35mph reply back let me know.

    Great Video ...pls upload more and break down the process of manual ...I have couple of questions -
    1) Once The Bite Point is engaged , You apply Gas ..after that for how long do we need to hold/keep the clutch still before letting go of the clutch? I have lot of jerks...Also once in motion ...do I need to keep on giving gas in a constant manner. ..I guess yes o'wise it will stall.
    2) Another thing how do you identify the bite point? Pls explain couple of different ways. When I saw your video, I saw the car vibrate/shake a bit so I understood you were at bite point. But At times, When I leave clutch My car is damn silent( They say ur engine tone is low when @ bite point) and when I give gas and hold clutch..Boom it stalls...So need couple of diff ways to identify bite point. Thanks again

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hello if you do this th-cam.com/video/bTGP5t54x0s/w-d-xo.html over and over your foot will get used to where the bite point is. by the time you go to hills your foot should automatically know where the bite point is or you will have trouble. The whole point of that video is to build the muscle memory so you don't have to think about it. Use your ankle (if you can)like explained in the other videos to flick your foot to the bite point vs using your whole leg. If you have trouble identifying the bite point try doing the same thing in reverse gear and see if the feeling is stronger. Before doing any hill starts you should understand flat ground starts like in these 2 videos. It explains how long you need to hold the clutch

    Very nice video! What is the proper way of operating the clutch? With heel planted on the floor or using the whole leg? Since the clutch pedal in my car (Splash) rests a bit high unlike other cars I am not able to put my heel on the floor and pivot. When I searched on the net I found most people use their whole leg (without heel touching the floor) to operate the clutch. Could you please advise? Thanks a lot in advance!

    So the car does roll back even if the clutch is fully engaged? Got it. It’s about practicing that bite point then giving it gas. As long as I feel that bite point the car won’t roll back? Sorry this is the biggest fear of mine. This and parallel parking in right spots with a manual

    Thanks a lot for the video andfor the enormous information conveyed. Why didnt you touch the technique of using parking brake on hill starts? Honestly speaking , I dont like the e-brake method. I remember there was an era when there was no e-brakes .

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hello I noticed 99% of the hill start videos were using handbrake so I didn't think there was need to make another one also because there is only one way to use a handbrake no way to really screw it up, i didn't feel I could add anything. Everyone should know how to use a handbrake it is easy and sometimes you need to use it on very steep hills. I will make a video of how a handbrake works maybe

    • @pradeepmannil7305
      @pradeepmannil7305 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer to learn conventional method first and then the e- brake method. As you mentioned . the arc or time taken to move the feet from brake to accelrator and finding the correct biting point is the main skill in hillstarts. e- brake method is safe but cumbersome to use in traffic.Thank you for the reply.

    yes, I did post and delete. I misunderstood you and was about to say you are doing it wrong but then I realized I misunderstood you haha. what I do is clutch in, place in first gear (because no one likes to sit in gear w/clutch in) and give it throttle... about 2K and ease the clutch out to the biting point somewhat quick, brief stall until it rolls then ease it all the way out. I may roll like a few inches but that's it

    hello there, I'm from Egypt, and ur videos helped me alot, I watched them again and again, I appreciate ur efforts,
    and I need a video to illustrate how to deal with intersections and bumps while I'm on third or 4th gear
    or if there any video kindly share the link

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much for posting. The weather is not great here so I havent had chance to make more videos. For intersections say and example making left hand turn , when you are learning I would stay close to the line so if you stall then you do not get stuck in middle of intersection then as you get more confident with your clutch and gas you can go further out into intersection. when you are first learning you should not shift in the intersection because if you make mistake shifting ("miss shift") then you will also get stuck in intersection so try to shift when you are almost all the way through. But if you are comfortable shifting then just do as normal. Can you explain a little more about bumps

      hi please watch my latest video I posted today. Also you can keep your foot on break but remember you don;t want to keep it there too long. once you go to bite point you want to start doing whatever it is you are going to do and if the start doesn't work stop clutch in and try again

    i drive a 98 ford escort, im in dire need of motor mounts, my car shakes more than it honestly should when i release the clutch especially on a hill, for some reason my clutch almost feels like it just doesn't catch on a hill, and when im actually there at the bite point the car just shakes and doesn't hold it. im going to continue to practice with that roll back maneuver u were doing on a hill.

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's ok if it shakes or jerks it's going to happen as long as you can engage your clutch and go then you are ok. If it doesn't bite and hold it may be worn out is the bite point very high on the pedal , usually if it is high it means it is worn but that doesn't mean it is finished. The point is not to hold the car but get used to clutching up until the bite point and then going for your gas this gets rid of all the dead space where the clutch is not doing anything.

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a lot of miles but as long as it still gets you where you need to go then it is good :) You can recognize when it slips because the engine will rev up as you give gas but the car will not accelerate. If you don't have an RPM gauge and you are new to stick you may not be able to recognize that. Here is 2 videos if you watch the tachometer on this one you can see it rev up but the speedo doesn't really move

      Ameil I just assume at this point the person has spent lots of time learning about their clutch and doing flat ground starts at least 2 hours before they start to do hills so when I say more clutch they would know we want to move not sit still, I guess I should have used the word release you are right. You can practice this on flat ground th-cam.com/video/h9Fa1PLXuRk/w-d-xo.html
