  • The brake booster on this 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500HD started to leak and needed replacement. I also replaced the master cylinder as a maintenance item. This isn't a how-to video, I just replaced the parts, resolved the problem and filmed what I did.
    Questions & Answers - Inspired by actual TH-cam comments:
    Q: Can I leave a thoughtful comment, tip, or constructive criticism regarding your video?
    A: Sure.
    Q: Will you advise me on a particular problem I’m having that is similar to what I saw in the video?
    A: Depends.
    Q: I’m upset that you forced me to watch your free video and through the use of subtle mind control you removed my ability to press the stop button. Now, what are you going to do to make this right?
    A: Send you an invoice?
    Q: One time I used a potato for a camera and videotaped two kids jumping on a trampoline - it was easy. I’ve never edited a video but can I comment about how easy it is?
    A: LOL
    Q: I have problems with obsession and you are my new BFF. Will you talk to me 24/7/365?
    A: No.
    Q: Where do you live? Where do you live? Where do you live?
    A: Sigh, see above.
    Q: Can I meet with you?
    A: Dude.
    Q: I’m a professional and as such I have a deep belief that ONLY professionals are allowed to do what you did in the video. I have a God given right to charge excessively for it too. Are you professionals?
    A: No.
    Q: You didn’t show the circuit-breaker being turned off - therefore it didn’t happen. Won’t people get poked with 120 volts from their finger up to their elbow if they don’t turn the breaker or switch off?
    A: Yes, we suspect they would.
    Q: I’m 80 and have 85 years-experience. You did it wrong in your video. Will you remove your video from TH-cam?
    A: No, and your experience makes you sound old and inflexible.
    Q: You look like a 1944 German soldier without a helmet.
    A: Thanks?
    Q: I did a safety-audit regarding your video - can I post all of the unsafe things you did?
    A: It’s a safe bet we’ll delete your comments.
    Q: I’m a professional and your video diminishes my ability to earn a living. Can I leave a comment whining about that?
    A: Hmm, let’s see. No.
    Q: I’m smart and you’re dumb. I know everything there is to know about the subject you showed in the video and I want to blather on about how much I know. Can I talk about me?
    A: You need to get yourself a girl, mate.
    Q: I’m 40 and live in my mom’s basement. I’m feeling poorly about myself and I want to take it out on you with complete anonymity, can I do that?
    A: Sure. As long as you don’t mind us deleting your comment and banning you from the channel.
    Q: Hey! I have a right to say whatever I want don’t I?
    A: Yes. Yes you do. See above.

    Great video. Just 2 comments. Replacing a master cylinder in these older year vehicles are all very similar. Not much difference if any at all. Bleed it on the bench, install. The one thing I found that is much easier is that you can bleed from the master cylinder. Rather than each wheel, bleed from the master cylinder lines the same as you would the wheels. Also, I made my own bleeder kit for the wheels. I found the proper size hose, cut a hole in a water bottle top for the hose to feed into. Filled the bottle about 1/4 full of fluid so the hose was in the bottle. I loosen the bleeder screw with the hose attached and pump the brake. It works well if the hose is the right size and helps if you stableize the bottle above the wheel but not necessary.

      I also have a home made one man bleeder. Some aquarium hose and an old plastic water bottle. The key, as mentioned, is to add a little fluid to the bottle, so that when you pump the pedal, it never draws air back in. I took some scrap aluminum electric fence wire and wrapped it around the bottle neck so I can hang the bottle. Tie wraps copper or steel wire or a bungee cord could work as well. Bench bleeding the mc is a must as well. Just did the front and rear pads on my 01 2500hd LB7 this past weekend. 2011 booster upgrade for firmer pedal and new hoses this weekend.

    just bought an '00 silverado 2500hd and i suspect the same thing....thought was an oil leak at first but also seeing the fluid spots near the wheel well. either way I think it's gonna be a master cylinder and brake booster replacement. great video! and I also got one of those "one man" bleeder tools from autozone and it's a complete joke! I got some 5/8 tubing from the hardware store and used an empty water bottle to make my own bleeder kit

    Great video I learned a lot. I might have to replace the master cylinder on my 2002 Silverado but have never done it before. The truck keeps eating up the inside brake pad leaving the outside one untouched on all four tires. Still does it with two brand new calipers so I’m thinking my master cylinder and/or brake booster is the problem

    • @WIDESIDE72
      @WIDESIDE72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope you fixed your issue. Be sure that your caliper pins are clean and lubed. Also be sure the pad guides are clean.

    Good how to on replacing the booster. It’s always important to identify what the leaking fluid is. Positive Identification of the wet spot in the fender well as power steering fluid instead of brake fluid would have avoided a $100 addition to a project. I also assume you didn’t know about the 2011 hydro boost upgrade. I just got mine delivered today. It is supposed to give a firmer pedal feel. No disassembly like the one in the video. I plan on replacing it and the lines to the pump and gear this week. 2001 2500hd LB7 with 307 miles.

    • @dirtyshirtinfo
      @dirtyshirtinfo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right. Correctly identifying the fluid would have saved some money but honestly I would have probably changed the master cylinder anyway. I’ve always viewed them as high risk for failure and given its age and our pending road trip I can envision myself doing that. Thanks for watching.

      I need to do mine as well, can you tell me about the hydro boost upgrade. I was looking at parts, assuming they would be the upgrade, but it has the channel still on the face of the unit, I am sure I just don't know what I am searching for or how to search for it and I need to know what I am talking about or looking for when I go to the parts store in case its another new person who doesn't know what I asking for. Thanks

    I have to admit that about 1/3 of the way into your video I was expecting a disaster but you pulled it out magnificently! I’m going to do the same thing to a 2004 Suburban in the next few weeks. BTW I’m with you. If they are going to sell a rebuilt booster the damn thing should not have to have parts swapped out. Who’s actually doing the rebuilding! Great video. Anything in the past year with the new booster?

    There's a much easier way to bleed your brakes. All you have to have is a hose, zip ties, and a gatorade bottle. And one person can do it. For the rest of the video is great.

  • @rubenfelixojeda

    One thing I missed, why does it affect the power steering??

    • @dirtyshirtinfo
      @dirtyshirtinfo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Regardless of what I may have said or didn’t say in the video the brake booster is receiving boost from the power steering pump. The leaking fluid is in fact power steering fluid (possibly misidentified in the video? I don’t remember). So if you mess with the brake booster you’re indirectly messing with the power steering. I was learning as I went along in this project, hope that helps.

  • @fresh2death35
    @fresh2death35 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you say “go stop to stop “ are you referring to “ drive and reverse “ ?
    I replaced my booster,bleed the brakes but my power steering isn’t able to turn the wheel at a stand still

    • @dirtyshirtinfo
      @dirtyshirtinfo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      By stop to stop I mean as far as the steering wheel can be turned left and then right before it physically stops. Best guess is that there is air in the power steering system that’s preventing it from working properly. Either the booster, the steering gear box or both have air in them.

    Wow hydraulic brake booster, is this just for 2500/3500 or the 1500 too. I need to go look at my 1500 i suspected a bad master but now i need to actually check. Thanks for the vid

    • @dirtyshirtinfo
      @dirtyshirtinfo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure about the 1500 compared to the 2500 but while working on other projects we've noticed a ton of similarities between these Chevy classes of vehicles. Odds are the 1500 is very similar if not exactly the same. Good luck.

    Don't forget to include all the beautiful women D-ing.IYs in the good morning and targeted audience. Also China just takes OEM CORES and Replaces the internal parts with less quality cheap parts. Ie. Electronic parts with high quality OEM are made with precious metals like gold plated mostly. Compare to Chinese made replacement parts that I have had fail on within 30 days like clock work. I took them apart to compare was in shock but not surprise counterfeiting has made it to our auto industry.

    I have the same fluid leaks in my wheel but I only seem to be losing power steering fluid. Lines are dry but it's wet under the master cylinder/powerboost unit. All lines and bolts are tight.

    • @dirtyshirtinfo
      @dirtyshirtinfo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's been a minute since I did this work but I believe the booster is running off the power steering pump. I also believe I commented in the video that the leak was brake fluid, this is incorrect best I recall. All of this needs verification, it's been too long since I released the vid. Good luck.
