I was Air Force in 89 training. I met an Army sergeant who was changing career job from tank commander to electronics. His reason, every time he heard an A-10 fly over head gave him nightmares. He saw first hand what they could do and he didn't want to be in a tank if another military got their hands on A-10s.

Retired Air Force here. This plane has more than earned its place in the sky. Every time they try to retire it, they have to bring it back because it's so good at what it does. Close air support. This plane won't win a beauty contest, but it will save a lot of butts out in the battlefield.

What in particular fascinate me is that it could take that many hits from enemy side and still make it back to the base. I think this is one of the best war planes americans ever made. And what do you mean "...won´t win a beauty contest"? I think it´s beautiful. Another beautiful plane is Me 262, by the way.

Thank you for your service! The A-10 is a true modern marvel. A testament to great engineering. Operational since 1977 and still relevant to this day. It's achievements.. it's looks.. the sound of those turbofan engines and iconic GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling gun.. all together just epic 🙌

Afghanistan and Iraq vet here. You asked about how they can find such a small target in such a big sky. The pilots are talking to either a JTAC or someone who is JFO qualified. As many time as I have heard the conversations between our guy and the pilots and even know what's being said it never failed to amaze me how chaotic it sounds but is perfectly choreographed. Then there is all the stuff the pilot has to do. It's several minutes of chaos just to get approval for that 5 second gun run. But there is a lot of information that sounds like gibberish that gets shared in a short period of time to make these things happen.

  • @CloudJL

So the way combat pilots ID the enemy and friendlies is typically you’ll have a JTAC (Joint Terminal Attack Controller), CCT (Combat Controller) or TACP (Tactical Air Control Party) guy on the ground coordinating with air support telling them where nearest friendlies are from the enemy, giving the pilot appropriate restrictions to avoid any accidental friendly fire (as we heard in a clip in the video), and monitoring the attack. A lot of aircraft also have a ‘blue force’ tracking system that shows the pilot where the JTAC is and the pilot can update the tracking system as well or it updates in real-time. Simply put, there’s a guy on the ground that calls in air support and provided friendly position and enemy position so that air support can put guns on enemy position or warheads on foreheads!

I'm retired U.S. Air Force, and I served in the Gulf War '91,'94, and '97. Went out a few times wondering if I would get shot that day. We were pinned down once, where we knew we couldn't get out without casualties. So, we called in a "Hog". The A10 got there in less than 15 mins, assessed the situation, talking with us, then let loose on the bad dues with that awesome gatling gun! He destroyed them! A few dead, their vehicle cut to shreds, and the rest running like hell! We stood, cheered, yelled good and bad stuff, and very glad we have such air support! The A10's are REAL lifesavers! Still my favorite plane!

There's an all team coordinating approach, areas in a grid+probably some type of AWAC cyrcling above , assesment of the situation (probably some live image feed)+ information from the ground. Been upgraded probably means you can shoot and 'forget', while keeping track of the ordinance on it's way into the 'target'.
The A-10 is purpose built, and probably one of it's kind. Heard the Super Tucano is incoming, a plane also designed for ground support.
The Russians also have their own version of ground support plane.

  • @LogicalNiko
    @LogicalNiko 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Basically it all comes down to maps, map references, and landmarks. Usually relayed by a JTAC. The grid reference system is designed for you to universally designate positions on a map down to 1 square meter. However operators will also use location references in terms of previously established waypoints and they can give identifiers in terms of visible landmarks. So for example they may indicate the location of their vehicle, or a larger reference (like square 1km gird they are in) and then indicate that they are on the on the eastern side of the road with enemy activity approaching from the west at approximately 500 meters.
The pilot has an identical set of reference points. They will use their navigation system to approach a specific region and then start looking for the landmarks. For example they would start approaching the 1km area and see the road, then look for a vehicle on the road, and then from there look for activity to the west of that road.

The A-10 Thunderbolt II, aka the Warthog, aka The Hawg makes everyone on the battlefield take up religion. Allies go "Oh thank God, we have Hawgs on station!!!" The Enemy goes "Oh God, Warthogs inbound... run you dummy, run!!!"

  • @jefferyshute6641

The A-10 is a beloved aircraft among pilots and the troops they support. Sadly, it is being retired from service and will be replaced by something different. If they are not being used, I bet a certain country in eastern Europe could put the A-10 to good use. I'm just saying.
There's another couple videoes you might like. One is called, "Why No One Wants to Fight the A-10 Warhog." Another about an A-10 female pilot that was able to fly her plane back to base after it was damaged badly by enemy fire.

@@MyLordRockThanks for your service. Good to hear the A-10 will be around awhile. I would love to be there in person when that legendary gun is fired, from inside the cockpit.
Somewhere I heard they were going to replace it with the A-35. Is that even feasible? I don't know much about aircraft, but it seems an odd choice for close ground support. Maybe it's the sensors...

The soldiers were spread so far out at 17:17 because they were in a wide-open area. Spreading out makes them a much smaller profile to the enemy. If you are too close together, you can lose more people. Also, it makes the formation look much more prominent, which may deter the enemy. Retired U.S. Army for 24 years and multiple combat deployments.
