My basic hornady dies make awesome ammo, but if I had my choice at the time I would have bought some competition dies. 6.5-284 was all the rage when I got mine so the good dies were always sold out. seat your bullets about .015 off the lands and being a norma throated 6.5-284 (as opposed to the short action version) you open up a LOT of your case capacity/make a larger combustion chamber giving you room for more powder and greater velocity. For target shooting, I wouldn't be just trying for more than about 2950fps just to preserve the throat. I have pushed mine pretty hard and am getting toward the end of the barrel life at about 750 rounds. Ease up on your pressures for every day shooting and you will get a lot more out of it. My average COAL is around 3.210" and that is just with a 130 grain bullet. So you can open up a LOT of case capacity by finding your lands and loading according to that. .020 off is what most people start with. Get a internal ballistics program like Gordons or Quickload and you can better approximate your pressures when you start adjusting the seating depth. Sorry for the long winded post. I have more hours studying and geeking out on 6.5-284 than even my beloved 6.5x55. I get excited about it. Have a good one.
You can easily get 3000+ with that 30 inch barrel. My 26 inch 6.5-284 111LRH can be pushed to 3100 with 140 grain bullets without terrible pressures when loading my own.
Hi Adam The 6.5x284 was extremely popular in F Class for a while. I necked it back to 7mm and most followed. Now i use a 7mmSAUM. The best powder is H4821SC you can use H4350 however that is a fast poeder and tourches barrels fast. H1000 is another powder that works well aswell as VV N165. As for acopes i run a 10-60 March on my 7mm and an 8-80 March on my 6mm Dasher. Your magnification is at the lower end but would be ok. The problem you might have is using a FFP scope your reticle will become to thick on higher power for absolute precision. Also you have a Mil scope. Each Mil is close to 1/3 moa per click whete we all run 1/8 moa per click. It will work for a bit of fun but to course for precision at range as each click on your scope is clise to 4" at 1000 yards. My scope is 1.25" approx per click. The X in the target is around 5". Hope you have fun with it but as you are aware the 6.5PRC does everything the 6.5 284 does better. 7mm is now the standard im running 190gr A Tips at 2860fps. Nice easy load and good for 20 round strings of fire.
Thanks for another really fun video, Adam. That could be a good elk catching bing-bang if an elk wanders across the 1000 yard range. You may need to hire a gun bearer to tote that around the mountains for you. 👍🏼
I had a 112 BVSS in 308 and 22-250 , The 308 was my long range Whitetail rig here in Pennsylvania with a Bausch & Lomb 6-24, Got old and stupidly sold both. Your 6.5 will cook a barrels throat IF YOU PUSH THE POWDER & DONT LET IT COOL between shots. Enjoy
Another great find at Tolivers! I have watched Guy Eastman catch mule deer & pronghorn with a Savage in 6.5x284. However, he was not hauling a F-Class rig up & down the mountains. I would like to see you hunt with either the new Super Grade or Sendero on the elk hunt. Cheers.
Also Retumbo powder will give you great acercy looking at my dad's notes 147gr ELD-M's 28in barrel 56.5gr powder 3017fps with ES of 14 / SD of 7. accuracy was .3 . RL#26 55.5gr powder same bullet 147 ELD-M's 3107 .2in groups. Also 140gr Bergers with 50.7gr of IMR4955 cci250 primers 3046fps 26in barrel . I know you like heavy bullets here's a load RL#26 55.1gr powder Fed210m primers pushing 156gr Bergers 3000fps seated 0.035 off lands 26in barrel. Hope some of this helps have loads more of data on the 6.5×284 my dad started reloading in 1970 we have lots of data on more calibers than I can list lol Good luck and good shooting.
Apparently my earlier reply to your comment got lost when I paused it to fact check my data. Another very interesting comment on this caliber with very worthwhile data! 3,000 fps with the 156 grain Berger is pretty amazing from this case!
You will love that rifle!. I have one with a nightforce scope on it and 29 inch long barrel. Got a mount with a 20 MOA tilt to help with the long range scope tilt. .. Groups great!
@@WHOTEEWHO The savage is chambered in 6.5x284 lapua, while some others I have are 6.5x284 Win. The only difference that I have found is that the Lapua has a longer throat free-bore, so you can seat the boolot out of the case a little farther. This distance needs to be allowed for in your re-loads for the best groups. The Hornaday data manual is for the short throat, and the loads are a little lighter because the short throat means less available case volume, which if the powder charges are the same, will cause higher pressure. Just something to watch out for when looking at data. Check the seating depth when looking at the load charts..
If I could make a couple suggestions to help you on your 6.5 x 284 Norma journey. Redding Competition Dies. A reloading press that is dedicated to just this round and this round only. Lapua brass. 130 grain Bergers for short range, 100 to 500 yards. 140 grain Bergers for going past 500 yards. CCI BR2 primers H4350sc Shortcut powder Don't load for more than 2950 fps, anything faster, you're wasting powder and barrel life. 20 power is a good starting point to hit a 1000 yard target.
I have heard that the 6.5x284 held a very long record for the tightest group in some competitions that’s just what I heard anyway that savage model 12 them rifles are so awesome extremely accurate you will love it
Hey !! so happy for you man :) yeah I can't wait to see it out there. The 284 I hear can be loaded hot if you really want to and maybe I'm wrong but did I see a slight taper on that casing? Wow this is a gun both me and my son want to get into for LR target. we both decided mostly that is where we will spend most of our time shooting together ! Can't wait! Be well. Wishing you and yours all the best always, T
I have the exact same rifle. You will see 2900-2950fps without any effort using 140ish bullets. The 30" barrel makes it easy. Keep the loads mild and barrel life will be a lot better. H4831 works well. Even slower powders work maybe better. I have excellent accuracy with H4831 and Sierra, Berger, Hornady, etc. It is not picky, everything shoots good.
In Australia we have to get a permit to purchase firearms and if i applied for the number of permits to purchase the number of firearms that you have bought in the last little while a lot of questions would be asked. I hope you guys do not end up like here in Australia but i know the government is working on it. Good luck.
Ive shot same rifle and caliber with 35 power weaver scope . At 100 yards it was 1/4 inch and under rifle. I joke it was the most boringly accurate rifle ive ever shot lol . Almost impossible to not shot .10 to .25 inch groups! Enjoy your gonna love it .
The stock is made to work in an F-class bench rest so it can slide straight back at the recoil of the shot. You then slide the rifle back to the stop position so that the rifle is in the exact same position again. The rest has an adjustment meant arm that you use to move the rifle back on target without breaking your hold or body position. This is a specialized rest for bench rest competitions. This is not a hunting rifle.
The 6.5 x 284 winchester was the F class king for years. You can shove custom actions pretty hard. Never tried to push the savage PTA to extreme pressures. You will lose the primer pockets pretty quick if you sauce it up too much and brass isn't cheap for those.
Very cool ,never heard of that caliber ,congratulations ,i know u will try it out ,with you everything gets a fair shake cant wait to see you try it out
Oh. the reason factory ammo is loaded light is due to the shorter OAL and the fact that they figure somebody is going to stick them in a 6.5-284 WIN chamber with a shorter throat and they don't want to send a bolt through a jawbone.
Great cartridge, hope yours is a shooter. Retumbo and 140 vld hunters are working great out of my 26” Preferred Barrel Blanks barreled Howa. Honestly everything shoots well out of that thing. From ELD X’s, Sierra Game Changers, Nosler ballistic tips and now the Bergers I’m tinkering with.
Shot F class with this very rifle. Extremely flat shooting hot round. Down side is it’s usually only good for about 1000 rounds before the barrel needs replaced. I got around 950 before I lost accuracy.
Traveled from NYS to visit my buddy in Quebec,TN and to stop at Tolivers, and he told me you just bought exactly the rifle I was looking for. 😂 Guess I'll watch the video of the Savage Model 12. My visit wasn't a complete loss, I found a great deal on some powder.
Nosler load data book shows 6.5×284 140-142gr bullet using RL#19 52.0grs of powder in pushing 2952fps IMR 4831 140-142 gr bullet 50.0grs of powder 2950fps both loads with a 26in barrel. Nosler load data 6.5PRC RL#26 56.0grs of powder 3065fps 26in barrel H1000 58.0grs of powder 3050fps 26in barrel so iam sure you will hit 3100+fps with that 30inch barrel in your 6.5×284 hope this helps it's a real performer my dad built one in the years ago with a 26in varmint barrel and it hit the best node between 3000-3050 mark for us can't wait to see it in action on the range whoteewho
F class is not benchrest the rules specifically separate it from benchrest shooting. It is shot prone and prone only. 35x is rather weak for use in F class, scopes commonly have magnification of 40-60x. If you are interested I have a new in the box 15-60x 56 scope I would make you a deal on.
Personally, before I even shot that boolot slinger, I would put a bore scope down it to see what the condition of the barrel is in. Hopefully, it was shot only occasionally by someone who just wanted a crazy accurate varmint slinger. But, even if the barrel is "shot out" to an "F Class" shooter, it will likely be more accurate than 95% of the boolot slingers out there. But if there is quite a bit of fire cracking and erosion at the throat, its a really good idea to keep an eye on it. If it starts eroding pretty fast, it will be time for a new barrel. [ But, since it is a full profile barrel, you MAY have the option of shortening the barrel at the breech end, and have it rechambered. a GOOD gunsmith would be able to tell you if that is an option. It was something that just popped into my head. ] It might be more cost effective to have a Hart, Shilen, Brux, Bartlein, Krieger, etc. single point cut genuine target barrel put on vs. another factory barrel. With the plus factor that one of those barrels will add monetary value to the slinger when you sell or trade it. / I have to tell you that I am bit envious. I would LOVE to own a slinger like that! But honestly, it would kind of be a waste for me. I can not find a safe place to shoot that has more than 200 yards distance to shoot. And I would rather NEVER shoot, than to shoot and someone get hurt.
What is cool about that BB for Elk is you can hunt from the front porch then jump in the pick-up and go recover it LOL!!!!! Had one in 6mmRem, 1 5/16" X 30" Douglas, 14+ lbs. Fun stuff
Adam, you ae low hangin' fruit for gun sales people..... 🙂 That's a 6.5 on the 284 Winchester case, so brass could be made from that if you are stuck. With that 30" barrel and 140gr pills you should get close to 3000fps... Not a rifle you'd carry in the bush, but it should shoot some good groups.
I use a Caldwell Rock with the wide front rest. 284 case is nearly identical to a 280 Rem. in case capacity. 6.5 -'06 would be good starting loads I'd think. Cortina could maybe point you to someone that shoots it or used to.
Lee, Hornady, Speer, etc. loading manuals have recipes for that cartridge. It’s been around for quite a while, so no need to estimate loads from another cartridge’s loads.
I think I would have took a good look with a bore scope at the barrel condition before purchase. I had purchased a few hot shot rigs that look like they were safe queens, but the barrels were toast. quite common on the 220 swift, used on rock chuck hunts.
Nice rig Adam!! I'm sure it'll shoot fine I hear them saying it's a barrel burner but I also know that you can control that by not sending them too hot. Like less than 3500 fps
That’s trigger when adjusted down to 6 ounces will click if you touch the trigger and not the front lever on the accutrigger. It will click but not fire. Other than that you should be driving nails with that one
Whoteewho you finally got something on here that’s totally in my wheelhouse. I have 4 of those model 12 all turned into different Benchrest calibers . That 6.5 x .284 is so close to the 6.5 PRC for me it’s not worth the upgrade in my hunting rifles . Know problem taking Elk or Moose with that Caliber. I don’t think you will want to pack that benchrest rifle on a hunt . If you want any loading info drop me a line ? I would look for Lupua brass and yellow box bullets if you’re serious about small groups. This got me excited, will be right along with you on this journey lol
I have 2 6.5x284's, both custom builds I did myself. Have been shooting and hunting with them for years. I have found that the 6.5x284 will outrun the PRC, I have a 30 "Benchmark barrel on my bench gun, A5 stock, and a Sightron S3 10x50x60. I have shot mine out to 1100 yds, and did a 5 shot group of 5.5 inches. Pm me for relaoding info, H4831 is my go to powder.
Nice pick up, give Mr. Cortina a bell, I’m sure he will be able to point you in the rite direction, looking forward to seeing how it goes at the range, cheers Yogi ✌️
Out of all of the 2nd hand bing bangs you own this one has the highest chance of the barrel being shot out. No problem though because it's a great action you can re-barrel it and just like new.
I own a savage in 6mm norma thats the same as this but with a countoured rear stock i lightened up the trigger absolute tack driver .25 inch groups all day long
Also we in Australia cannot have live ammunition, powder or primers sent through the post only by courier and only then with a dangerous goods permit which costs around $120
When you adjust the trigger down all the way SLAM the bolt shut. if it trips adjust it back up till it stops tripping when slammed shut. then if you want you can delete the trigger safety. Also Riffle Basics makes a fine trigger assembly for it.
You'll be better of handloading 6.5-284 Norma. I've been loading it for about 20 years. Factory ammo is insanely priced. So far in both of mine the 130 accubond, 127 LRX, and 140 Berger VLD shoot very well. I just picked up 500 Norma Bondstrike 143 grain to test. But I also have 6.5CM and 6.5PRC
The first thing that came to mind was the lyrics of a song by an Aussie band called noiseworks, they had a song called "touch", the lyrics said "reach out and touch somebody". Coincidence???🤔🤔
Nice rig wtw I looked at one of those and the 12 Palma a few times, wondered how they would shoot. I went with an er Shaw with the same action and bigger barrel. Hope it bug holes for you.
Had one it used magpro powder to reach close to 2950fps should compare to 6.5 prc and 264mag hope uall get to shoot at 1000yrds good luck pss hope to see you shoot 264 mag Winchester madel 70 should be cool to see which of ALL u 264 cal Bing bang boomers u like da best could be hard choice❤
Definitely want to see a elk hunt with it . Ifit is a backpack hunt and you use that gun even better. Might want to watch some Elk Shape videos first. 😊
I’m thinking Adam might want to have a dedicated gun bearer for an elk hunting trip, like in the African safari movies. That rifle looks way too heavy to be toting around the mountains!
Do a side by side shootout with the 220 Swift..I will predict based on your luv of the 22-250 and the trigger on the 220 it will group better than the 6.5 you just previewed..
As soon as you said that it was a Savage and I saw the barrel I knew what it was. Since all three of my rifles that I own are Savage I have spent time on their website lol 😆
25% OFF all ARKEN with code: whoteewho
..now we talkin ..😉..
6,5-284 Norma is DA SHIT..
//🍻🇸🇪🍻
For F-Class, SFP scopes are preferred over FFP scopes because at 1000 yards the size of the cross hairs make a difference.

Very informative post. It's nice to see someone else give Adam some extensive reading material that is science based...
This is solid advice, thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Holy shit man!!! Just noticed. CONGRATULATIONS ON 500K SUBSCRIBERS!!!

You can easily get 3000+ with that 30 inch barrel. My 26 inch 6.5-284 111LRH can be pushed to 3100 with 140 grain bullets without terrible pressures when loading my own.

@@WHOTEEWHO Note that I didn't say "No pressure signs" It was definitely on the ragged edge of "Safe Loads". I won't share the recipe.
That thing is sick. Should take it to the 1 MOA at 1,000 yards challenge with texasplinking haha. Great video
Be fun. Very far away from me tho

Fun stuff
🤣🤣🤣
Adam, you ae low hangin' fruit for gun sales people..... 🙂
That's a 6.5 on the 284 Winchester case, so brass could be made from that if you are stuck.
God on you! What a rifle and scope, just love it!!
If you can't remember how many guns you have..you need more!
"If anything cool comes in, just let me know" 😂
Great catch Hero! 👍
Nice rig Adam!! I'm sure it'll shoot fine I hear them saying it's a barrel burner but I also know that you can control that by not sending them too hot. Like less than 3500 fps
your last two 6.5 (6.5 x 300 weatherby and 264 win mag), I need to play WHOTEEWHO Jeopardy. LOL
.264 win. mag was your newest 6.5 slinger.
Nice one for your collection . 👍🇺🇸
Wow awesome! I'll take all the tips I can get
@@WHOTEEWHO I don’t know how to use this to communicate. I don’t want information published on the website
AWESOME
Nice pick up, give Mr. Cortina a bell, I’m sure he will be able to point you in the rite direction, looking forward to seeing how it goes at the range, cheers Yogi ✌️
Already called him before I bought it 🤣
@@WHOTEEWHO your on the ball big fella, cheers Yogi ✌️
Out of all of the 2nd hand bing bangs you own this one has the highest chance of the barrel being shot out. No problem though because it's a great action you can re-barrel it and just like new.
About to find out
Purty dang cool, I think the 264 mag was the last one u got
I own a savage in 6mm norma thats the same as this but with a countoured rear stock i lightened up the trigger absolute tack driver .25 inch groups all day long
Awesome
Also we in Australia cannot have live ammunition, powder or primers sent through the post only by courier and only then with a dangerous goods permit which costs around $120
Yep I'm thinking of moving... WA sux now with it's stupid new gun laws .
When you adjust the trigger down all the way SLAM the bolt shut. if it trips adjust it back up till it stops tripping when slammed shut. then if you want you can delete the trigger safety. Also Riffle Basics makes a fine trigger assembly for it.
Sweet looking rig. I am sure it will be fun at the bench. Please do not use that BB Gun to shoot at Elk.
I have wanted one of these for so long. I’m glad, you got one
Does like barrels, about 800 rounds to the barrel if they are not too hot.
Compare it to your 264 Win Mag.
Thank you for the knowledge Hoot, another great video, see ya tomorrow 🇺🇸✊️🙏
Thanks for watching
Elk Hunting ! Heck yah anytime one can go on an elk trip it’s a must and to bring the F class , no elk will stand a chance . Cheers 🇨🇦🇨🇦
That would be awesome
The first thing that came to mind was the lyrics of a song by an Aussie band called noiseworks, they had a song called "touch", the lyrics said "reach out and touch somebody".
Coincidence???🤔🤔
Gorgeous Rig! Good luck
Gonna have to call Eric Cortina for some custom dies and info
I actually called him before I bought it 🤣🤣🤣
Nice rig wtw I looked at one of those and the 12 Palma a few times, wondered how they would shoot. I went with an er Shaw with the same action and bigger barrel. Hope it bug holes for you.
I have a rifle from MOA rifles chambered in 6.5x284 with a 26 inch barrel . H4831 with 140 Bergers vld pushing at 2950.
That's a beautiful t shirt, brother!!! I'm heading out tomorrow to ruin the day for some Wyoming prairie dogs
Love it
I think it may be a little small for elk you would really have to place your shot well. I think you should use 300prc for your elk hunt
Gotta place your shot well anyway. Although I still would bring a different rifle.. 17 pound rifle set up would not be fun
Yes Elk hunt with it
It's a rifle/oar. Used for hunting fish.
Have you ever tried out one of the new 22 Creekmore's? I am really curious
Not yet
Definitely want to see a elk hunt with it . Ifit is a backpack hunt and you use that gun even better. Might want to watch some Elk Shape videos first. 😊
I’m thinking Adam might want to have a dedicated gun bearer for an elk hunting trip, like in the African safari movies. That rifle looks way too heavy to be toting around the mountains!
What have you done Hootie and How many 6.5 variations do you need?
I've been asking for 3 years for you to do a 350 legend vs 300blackout I ended up doing my own test but it would still be cool to see you do it.
The weight of your new rifle is the same as my Sharps .45-70, which has a 36” barrel.
That'll be fun at distance ! Look forward to seeing it !
Stay tuned!
About time u got into some precision grade builds
Expensive.....
I'm broke
@@WHOTEEWHO me too
Can’t wait to see the accuracy, video on this
I can't wait either
Cannot wait to see you seeing some pew pew from that 6.5-284 that’s gonna be awesome
Do a side by side shootout with the 220 Swift..I will predict based on your luv of the 22-250 and the trigger on the 220 it will group better than the 6.5 you just previewed..
WTW's rifle collection is chock full of incredible pieces
My credit card bill is chock high too 🤣
@@WHOTEEWHO I feel that 😂
mighty heavy gun to go elk hunting with
😂😂 John got you.
I've been loading 6.5 284 for awhile I really like 142 grn nosler acubond long range
Like I said you got to try the 280 Rem ,hello from West Virginia
You need to get a 260 rem and put it up to the 6.5cm in comparison tests
Are there a 6.5 class cartridge with a short case light bullets (90 to max 100 gr) and above 2800 fps at the muzzle?
As soon as you said that it was a Savage and I saw the barrel I knew what it was. Since all three of my rifles that I own are Savage I have spent time on their website lol 😆
😁😁😁
Got the same rifle but in 308 win very good grouping 14:38
