  • This is the second day's agate hunt on the beaches close to the Rangitata river in South Canterbury. Between myself and Chris, we found 50 good agates and bits of chalcedony on the day!

Hi. The large stone you found that had the yellowish flecks that you said is often mistaken for agate... Can you please tell me what the name is? You did say but the wind blotted out your words. I find a lot of it at Timaru and Oamaru but can't find it's name. Would love to know if you please have time.

Hi Chrispys, I usually leave the smaller ones as is, the big ones I send off to be cut and polished by someone from my lapidary club 😄 Thanks for watching!

How do i get to this very exact beach? And is the only way in via a cliff? Thinking about young ones going up and down lol

Hi Mark! If you head to Lowcliffe and then take Waipuna road to the beach you get to this spot. Unfortunately, it's all very high cliffs. You can find a spot closer to Pendarves that is more accessible for kids 😄

I found a spot on that beach. If you go down ealing rd, then stevens road (it turns into a gravel road) and follow till you find the beach. There is a parking spot by some trees and a bank that my 3 year old and i climbed down to get to beach.

Hi Sarah, it's just north of the Rangitata river. There will be heaps more agates, especially after a big storm.
