  • Join me for an agate and petrified wood hunt on the Ashburton river in Canterbury, New Zealand. I find some really large examples of the blue-ish, banded agates and chalcedony found in that area. Hoping to get into the petrified wood from Mt Somers soon!
I've sent the agates away to have cut and polished and hope to get them back soon. Will do a video on it and link it here when I do.

'Look at all those chickens!' Hahaha, that gets me every time. Thanks for uploading - I love videos like this, they help me get an idea of what I should be looking for when I go for a fossick :)

Thanks for all the recent videos, really enjoying them. Where are the best places to have a hunt on the Ashburton if you have a few hours to spare?

Hi Brett, I enjoy having a look at the beaches towards Rangitata. But Pendarves also has some really nice agates 😊 Or you can just stick local to the Ashburton river. I've found some big ones in there!

@@mamlamborocks Thanks heaps for the tips! Planning to visit NZ with my teenage son later this year so will definitely check these locations out. Where on the river did you film this particular hunt? The scenery looks awesome...!

Did I see you find an Amethyst Agate at the Rakaia Gorge in one of your videos? Can't remember which one it was. You said you'd only been there a few minutes and found one just in the water at the edge of the river.

There is a NZ group on Facebook - it's called the New Zealand Lapidary, Rocks, Fossils, Minerals group I think.

I don't think the North Island has as many agates but they do have petrified wood!
