    Hey Sean,
    I'm on my second album and mixing out of headphones (unavoidable). My vocals were always sibilant until I saw your trick of using Sie-Q followed by a de-esser. It's made a massive difference and made me feel way less discouraged about getting the best sound despite my limitations.
    If I ever get the loot up to pay for some mixing, I'll definitely hit you up.
    Thanks for dropping gems on us.

    I loved the way the snare sounded once you boosted it up but I completely agree. The vocal is the focal point of a song's instrumentation. Good work. You always display good skills with simply tricks. Good balance of pro and 101 stuff. That's why your channel is as big as it is.

    Hello, Sean! A little off topic, maybe, but i see you are using the Shure SM7B microphone, and your vocals for the tutorials are pretty clean. I bought one myself, and it was very low and noisey, then i purchased a cloudlifter, but it really didnt help. it gets louder, with lower gain is all, but i get noise very easily. Would you please explain how your process with this microphone is? Thank you, big fan

    • @SeanDivine

      hey Benjamin, my SM7b produces some self noise as well - I typically use a noise gate on the way in to help

    Great videos man, you been doing great things for this community. any tips on how to deal with quiet mics ? what would you do if u had one? like TLM 102 or Rode nt1 they are quiet i would amplify the signal using the output part on a compressor on the way in like 5 to 8 DB. is it ok or do you have other way to get around that.
    thanks man

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      a better preamp with clean gain helps, otherwise there's nothing wrong with amplifying a clean signal in the output of the comp or other plugin in your vocal chain

    Sean,As a beginner myself, I was curious how you deal with latency with virtual instruments. It seems like you use a fair share of virtual instruments in your compositions and I was curious how you circumvent the lag so that it doesn’t hinder your ability to play a take.
    Sometimes I find that when I’m playing virtual instruments via midi controller the “feel” gets lost due to the inherently lag with vsts.

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hey Jared, try adjusting your audio I/O buffer to 256 or less

    • @jaredholton3145
      @jaredholton3145 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your advice again Sean. I've tried that with some success along with utilizing the low latency mode in logic x.
      An additional question if you get to it. When utilizing midi drum beats with a certain "feel." Do you typically quantize your beats and if so, are you utilizing the strength/swing parameters to maintain the original feel of your song.

    • @stevehay964
      @stevehay964 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaredholton3145 He hasn't answered that but I recommend using quantise in some parts, like kick and perhaps snare, for a solid beat and not using quantise on something like hats or tambourine to make an produce a live feel and trick the ears into thinking it's a real drummer. You can also play around with swing settings in parts of a track to make the beat more interesting and less obvious.

    Quality wise for an Bedroom with carpet 13 ft long, 11 ft wide, 7 ft height. A male Hip hop & R&B artist(mostly hip hop and pop). smooth natural sound not drenched in Autotune nor a screamer.I will be mixing and tracking the vocals myself. Moving blankets for treatment, no Bass Traps. Right now im using a Blue Yeti usb and Sony MDR 7506 headphones to mix. Working a min wage job and going to school full time. I prefer to save as much $ as I can to prepare for a hard time or potential tuition increase. Starting to take music seriously and want to make an upgrade to achieve sellable quality. I know it depends on the vocalist.So, im speaking in general.
    Can you rank these Mics in terms of quality on a scale of 1-100.
    A)Blue Yeti usb
    B) SM58+UR22mkii+CL-1
    C) NT1+UR22Mkii
    D)SM7B+UR22mkii+CL-1

      lyric stonier I had the USB mic. It’s cool but I think there are better mics for recording that are cheaper. I just recently ordered a Shure SM58. It’s. Dynamic mic. My USB port on blue yeti broke.

    where should our snares claps and hats be sitting in the mix level wise in db for rms, peak? after gain staging and processing if any had to be done?
    im curious to know. i normally up to this point have my kicks at -6 db peak for all my mixes. and -10 db on the overall stereo buss.is that too low or to high. if that makes sense! anyways thanks for these tips bro!

    Hey Sean my problem is recording and mixing to a 2 track beat most artist record to.I know you haft to turn the instrumental down to record but my problem is once you bring the instrumental back to unity gain the vocals will never match the loudness so i leave the instrumental down to fit the vocals and bring the whole mix up with a limiter and end up with a weak sounding mix.Any suggestions?

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      mix your vocals to match the 2 track. It can seem intimidating at first but once you figure it out, it's much easier and will give you a more dynamic and professional sounding mix th-cam.com/video/nLnsPPde_Eg/w-d-xo.html

    • @readyrecordsllc3786
      @readyrecordsllc3786 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SeanDivine I've watched that so many times.Even with my fader all the way up on the vocal channel it's still not loud enough to match the instrumental do you get the volume by increasing the gain on the compressor?

    • @nevillekodie5281
      @nevillekodie5281 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Demetrice Anderson try doubling the vocal track. It gives your vocals a much richer & louder sound

  • @JayLeeGames
    @JayLeeGames 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Loved the video my dude. One problem I seem to be having lately is the dreaded quiet mixes on other devices. I have been using meters to check that the volume sits at commercial levels and utilising limiters, but my mix still comes out very quiet often times. Is this due to mudiness in the track from poor EQ?

    • @nicebluejay
      @nicebluejay 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you prob need to concentrate on tightening up your low end with eq/comp and bringing up the top end in a pleasing way. check out the tonal balance control plug in from izotope which is quite useful. don't worry about the volume too much if you are going to release it, spotify will make yours loud enough as it turns all the other obnoxiously loud (and crushed) mixes down and yours up. ps. how on earth do you have so many youtube subs without any content?

    • @JayLeeGames
      @JayLeeGames 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you're probably right there, while I understand the basics of how EQ works, it still baffles me on how to use it effectively in my mixes. I'll look into it some more f'sure! As for the subscriber count, I used to be a gaming TH-camr between 2012-2015 full-time, but I lost interest in that kind of content so I privated my videos and spent the last 3 years figuring out what I wanted to do next :)
