  • An interview between Joanna Bogle and Fr Ian Ker, a Newman scholar, in Newman’s library at Littlemore in Oxford.
In this programme on Blessed John Henry Newman, Fr Ian Ker takes a personal look at the man who shaped British Catholicism and whose influence now extends throughout the universal Church. He and Joanna Bogle identify a number of surprising links between Newman and Catholicity in the modern world, thereby concluding that through Newman’s legacy as well as through his life, he is undeniably a saint.

Wonderful and informative interview in spite of its brevity. Those of us who are older would, I think, love an edition of Fr. Ker's Newman biography in an ebook, especially a Kindle, edition. Waterstones, the British bookstore chain (now wedded to Barnes & Noble, the surviving largest American bookstore chain, both run by James Daunt) has an ebook arrangement with Amazon's Kindle. My reasons are simple, a Kindle is portable (I take mine everywhere, including to work) and more affordable than bound or paperback editions. This is how I read almost exclusively although I have two library cards. And, of course, most American libraries have digital editions that can be borrowed for two or more weeks. Again, thank you for this interview. Mrs. Bogle is always a joy to listen to in any context and I listen to anything with Fr. Ker on TH-cam.

I agree with Dr Ian Ker: most people really are not very interested in truth. What most people do is find reasons _post hoc_ to justify what they want to be true. People are endlessly creative when it comes to supporting what they want to be the case. The social constructivists, for instance, claim that all truth is socially constructed (but isn't the claim that "all truth is socially constructed" itself a truth claim and therefore open to the same criticism?) and they do so principally because its a vehicle for remaking society as they wish.
