- "If you hate your own corruption in sincerity and truth, if you are really pierced to the heart that you do not do what you know you should do, if you would love God if you could, then the Gospel speaks to you words of peace and hope. It is a very different thing indolently to say, 'I would I were a different man,' and to close with God's offer to make you different, when it is put before you. Here is the test between earnestness and insincerity."
This sermon is taken from a collection of sermons given by Newman between 1825 and 1843, before his conversion to Catholicism. In it, he reflects on Christ's counsel to his Apostles, "If you know these things, happy are you if you do them." (John 13:17)

Yes, I retreated to a cottage in silence, in my old age, with gratitude for many years to love, and to serve, and now just to prayfully meditate on the Word.

I'm the first ti view this from New Zealand 🇳🇿🇨🇰👍♥️
This is a fundamental teaching of how to live the Christian life, brilliantly composed by a great saint.
It should be a mandatory lesson for every Confirmation Class being taught in the English speaking Catholic parishes in the world today!
First to view from San Antonio Texas from Saint Bonaventures 🎉❤
This is mind-blowing. Which one of us who even tries to walk with Jesus does not fall prey at some point to that state of mind Blessed Henry Newman describes?
I am... Lord, have mercy on us!!
Praise the Lord for this Audio Book.
Amen 🙏 this is a sermon who challenges my walk as a follower of Jesus
So very true. Especially in these days. So many "good Catholics" who put religion high - but only second. They (me included too often) try to serve mammon and God at once... Wrong. I am so sorry Lord!
Listening to Ray Charles singing "dear Lord, send a cloud with a silver lining." It was literal begging, not just a routine prayer.
“Today if you hear the voice of God , harden not your hearts”. Dear Lord, give us natural hearts.
Wow, such heart for Jesus
And he said to all, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. (Luke 9:23)...it doesn't need us a great wisdom to understand this...for many could 'talk'...but few...endure it...or even try to understand it...people nowadays even use religion to moneterize for their own benefit not for god grace.
Before you disregard my comment, take a lesson on humility and be open minded. Matthew 16:18, 2 Thessalonians 2:15, and John 6:53 justify the Church (singular) Christ established universally. The money problem you haven't discerned is exactly what the heretic Martin Luther insinuated out of pride, saying, "you can't buy your way into heaven" or from your words just scandal for their selfishness. The money aspect is to grow the Mystical Body of Christ and for the faithful, we give our first fruits back to God (10% tithes) because we understand God gives back abundantly.
@@AndrewAarvold no..I dont give 10% for God..I give everything I have..as much I have and willing to give..thats the portion I would give to my God...and nah...I am not as selfish as you think..but anyways..thank for your opinion..I respect that..
@@simplenobodycatholic you're taking it out of context. So you're giving your entire paycheck to God? Or maby you saw scripture saying sell everything you have if you want to be great. If you're on here, you're not doing everything.
@@AndrewAarvoldplease do read it carefully... as much as I have..and..WILLING to give....is not out of context at all...and how do you know and sure that I'm not doing everything for my God?
First from Toronto, Ontario Canada
Very educative book!
