This channel gives me lots of motivation to work on my xj.. Can't wait for the snow to melt out of my carport so I can install my lift, 35 inch claws and then take it wheelin!
Looking at doing this to my d30 front now because of this video. If it holds up I may upgrade to a selectable down the road. Trying to keep this build light, cheap, and reliable. Last rig was a v8, this may do fine with my 4.2 with basic future performance mods.
Watching this makes me want to do it now on my XJ! I also want a high pinion. But now I can use this video as a guide when I get lockers! Thank you! ❤️🐞
Doing the axle swap JUST to a HP isn’t worth your time. If your going to get a spare one and get it geared up that’s a different story. The hp/lp ring gear is not the weak link of the d30 lol
Nice work, bro. I just did the same locker in my 30 last year for our trip to Moab. Love the locker in front since it's almost invisible in 2wd, and pulls the front up and over obstacles. I'm still rockin stock shafts but upgraded the axle joints to the stronger Spicer 760s. No problems whatsoever. Gotta get a locker for the rear 8.25 next. Happy wheelin.
@@dukainmanning7246 It's held up really well. I drive it about 3 times a week to work on the freeway and do 75 mph no problem. I get the ratcheting only on tight turns, but I can't even feel it in 2wd. Did awesome in Moab. I wanted to lock the front axle since it's easier to live with in 2wd every day. No issues at all. I like the front locker because it helps to pull the rig up and over obstacles while a rear locker would tend to push the rig into the obstacle.
Great video! I am looking at the Aussie torq locker for my D30 in my JKU since I sheered my spider gears over the weekend and they are just as expensive as the Aussie locker
Been watching your videos for a while. Been following Mr. pickle since he started his TH-cam career. When you said “son of a monkeys uncle” I immediately subscribed.
You didn't paint the ring gear and check for the center placement and or check the backlash?? You'll be replacing that diff sooner than you think as it will wear and not operate properly.
You aren't changing any of that. Pinnion isn't even removed. The shims are under the bearings. This is just simply removing the gear set installing locker and reinstall.
Wait, you don’t have to worry about backlash or gear pattern when you take it off do you draw a line down the ring and carrier to make sure they both go on right?
Nope not at all. I do not notice it in the front unless it's in 4wd. In the rear axle from what I have heard it will ratchet and pop a bit when going around corners.
Ive been debating going trutrac front and locker rear or vise versa, I have a hp30 and 8.25 planning on 35s with 456 soon. Cant wait to see how this one works for you
Is that a high opinion Dana 30? Could you do a driving video I'm curious about how it is in town . I have a spartan locker in rear. Its noisy on the pavement city driving cant complain off road.
Is it possible to drive Jeep on AUSSIEs on highways? Asking because I have D30 front and D44 rear. Was thinking to put Aussies, but insure whether I can drive my jeep daily on it.
I wouldn't be concerned at all running them daily. In the front it doesn't engage unless in 4WD. And the rear may pop and ratchet a bit around corners, but straight line down the highway you should be fine
@@MuddyBeards4X4 Thanks. Installing the front having the rear D44 should I replace mu LSD gear with the Aussie or it just fine to have original D44 at the rear and AUSSIE at the D30 front?
hey, how has the locker been working, thinking on doing this myself and wondering how it's been holding up, also what gears are you running, I have 34's with 373 gears, I have a new carrier and was going 410 but have stock axles so I wanted to know how your set up is and how it holds up, thanks.
So far it has held up surprisingly well. I have 36's and 4.56 gears with stock shafts. I beat on it pretty good last trip and locker works great and so far no broken shafts
I've been looking at this locker for my ranger fx4 build and after watching your review video and this install video I think I've made up my mind about getting one. I see you dont have lock out hubs either so my concern is the road driveability. I live a good hour from trails or more in some cases so 80% of my driving is on road. How has it affected normal driving if at all? Thanks for the motivation to tackle something I've always worried about screwing up haha

if the gap between the cam gears is to big or to small how do you adjust that? with shims?
You can put the locker in with carrier in the jeep, much easier.

Well that encouraging news

This is for everyone with doubt. Been running an Aussie in my TJ Dana 30 for 10 years. The last 3 years with 37s and chromo shafts. No problems
I never had issues with mine as well
Chromies are a must in most stock axles with larger tires. IMO

I am trying to install the aussie locker in my 8.25 rear axle and cant find my videos is this the sme process except not taking the carrier out
Was it not an issue for you to mark where the ring gear was on the carrier?
So I am curious how the Dana 30 held up 3 years later with an Aussie locker in the front. Nice video.
I am not running the same axle anymore, but as far as I know that setup is still working just great

Gear mesh should be same, same. Definitely gotta run a pattern if you change case though.
It's easier if you put the two sides together before you put them in with the springs already installed

Hell ya man. I cant wait to try it out and get an honest opinion.
Wait, you don’t have to worry about backlash or gear pattern when you take it off do you draw a line down the ring and carrier to make sure they both go on right?

Nope. 4.56

Yes HP 30. I plan on doing a review video after I get a few trips in. I did drive it yesterday around town a little and I couldn't notice a thing
So is your front differential always locked while in 2wd
No. Only if you are in 4 wheel drive
Grease on the back side will help hold shims next time also
How do you engage them? Are they like a welded diff?
It does it automatically. The springs help engage them. They will slip and ratchet a bit so not quite the same as welding the diff

@@MuddyBeards4X4Solid setup
Hi MUDDY! Great video, simple and to the point. Have a Q: Is the AUSSIE good only for off road, or it is same good for daily driving?
I have had great luck with it on and off road. As long as you stay on 2wd on the street or barely noticeable.
How well does the Aussie locker work on drive pavement
In the front as long as your in 2 wheel drive you won't notice anything. In 4wd on the pavement it ratches and pops as you go around corners.

@@MuddyBeards4X4 how is it on the road?
I dont drive mine much on the street but from what I have done it's not noticeable as long as your in 2wd.
My biggest complaint is turning radius. It does lock up a bit if your trying to make tight turns on the trail
@@MuddyBeards4X4 huh ok, good to know. I called the company and they recommended heavier gear oil, I wonder if that could be a factor
Does this locker work with any size gear ratio?
Yeah, it’s just altering how the differential internals work. You probably don’t even need to remove the ring gear in a lot of applications
So Is your front axle always locked ?
no, it's not. only locks when a certain amt of torque is sensed. it's automatic, and a pretty ingenious invention.

May be a stupid question but .145 of an inch?
Is there any other type of measurement? Lol but yes inches.
Can you drive it as a daily w these types of lockers?
Absolutely. In the rear it might be less the desirable, but in the front axle you will not notice it unless it's in 4wd
