    There's one major cause for the collapse of Uchumi, Nakumatt & Tuskys that needs to be addressed thats beyond the boardroom; work ethic and integrity of the Kenyan worker! As long as every working day an employee wakes up with a new scheme to steal from their employer then more and more businesses will falter. Instilling Integrity in Kenyans should be prioritized.

I raised this issue and some people were making fun of me to stop being petty about "tumiguu twa kuku"..Now, this is how stealing and corruption is killing these Kenyan supermarkets..from the employees to the management...it starts stealing small sums here and there, stealing "petty" stock and then balloons to huge sums of money..

  • @kim1570

    As the saying goes.. The best way to rob a bank is to own one.
    I really do hope that current and aspiring entrepreneurs who are looking to create multi-generational wealth are studying these cases very carefully. In as much as parents want to do the best for their children and leave them a legacy, they also have to be very honest with themselves and evaluate whether their kids have the required skills and integrity to take care of the businesses they worked so hard to start.
    If one of your children doesn't make the cut, you need to be firm and axe them out of the business before they engage in corruption and destroy a good business that some of your other honest kids could've managed very well.
    This is something we black Kenyan business people should learn from our Indian counterparts, and there are many examples in Western family businesses too. Any child that doesn't make the cut is out, and be firm about it.
    Kenya could be the continental powerhouse of successful family-run businesses but this mentality of including all of your children in the mix, like sub-dividing a big plot of land and giving each child a parcel, needs to go.

    • @kim1570
      @kim1570 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Rhenadhis Well, technically, they are not stealing from themselves. They're stealing from a limited liability corporate entity for their own personal needs, and that's the problem with these family run businesses that lack good corporate governorship. They don't seem to understand (or care about) the domino effects of stealing from the business as a separate entity, which if they managed well, would sustain them and their progeny for generations. There is need to cultivate a notion that that you come into family business once you are learned professional and adhere to all employee and professional conduct. The problem is not asking the kids to work their way upwards and giving them free pass to managerial and directorship. These should be earned over time(while developing appreciation for professionalism and capacity of others you are working with regardless if they are family or not)
      Management should be outsourced or some shares sold out to balance ownership and directorship. You cannot get the very best from just within your family. 100% family ownership of large organizations is a disaster looming
