My first true introduction to Al Green came around '72, '73. I was 12 or so and Al was one of my Dad's favorites. He, my mother and I had just gotten into the car for a four-hour drive to North Myrtle Beach. Daddy pushed Al's latest into the 8-track cassette player, and that's where it stayed for the entirety of the trip. "Are we going to have to listen to this for four hours?" I asked myself. But by the time we got to the beach, I was a bigger fan than my father.
I enjoy these Kennedy center honors. It is a privilege to live in an era when we were had such beautiful music and to see the generation who grew up with these legendary artist perform and honour them. Can’t imagine the joy of these performers who perform for the honourees

Once he began singing gospel music he never look back I heard it was a terrible fight with a woman that threw a pot of hot grits on him made him change his ways he look deep inside of his self and said if I can make a woman that mad at me I’m doing something wrong and completely gave his life to God Hallelujah Amen

I saw Al Green at the Monterey Jazz Festival about 15 years ago. He was the main headliner of the Sunday night SRO show. Every time he sang a song ( and he sang them all), the audience would take over and sing the entire song. He just stood there smiling and serenading and having a great time. We will never see the likes of that again! Bless you, Mr Green!
