It never ceases to amaze me at how awesome The Cars were live. Their albums were designed to be played live and shows. Saw them once in the very early 80's and was astounded at how close the live versions were to the recorded versions.
Yes. Since I stumbled across the Cars live 1978, as a musician and listener, sometimes both, I recently acquired "The Cars: Complete Greatest Hits", and-since it's not quite "complete', picked up the 5-cd Original album series. They Are astounding, and a lot of that is the precision. But it's more when you notice what Elliot Easton does with a particular version as-played, is like living that moment, which from a perspective of music is an excellent embodiment of the idea of, "Less is more". Of course that may be the old guy who doesn't gather as many Selected Objects as the kid did. Adaptive. And so I like "The Cars". A group of Artists. Ric Ocasek, the song writer lyricist, Benjamin Orr, who together were the voice, with Eliot, David Robinson, rock-steady-drummer, and Greg Hawkes the Car-echo along with their particular diverse instrumentation. It looks like they had fun playing together, which is a wonderful for a creative band like, "The Cars". Ric Ocasek was asked by an interviewer. "How do you respond when someone says that there is a similarity to The Cars song. Ric replied, "You're right! it took along time to develop that sound."
So true, I believe in some ways The Cars were underrated but Elliot has to be one of the classiest , timeless great guitarists of all time, just as Benjamin Orr was underrated as such an incredible vocalist whose delivery of songs made them so unforgettable, such an incredible tone to his voice, and what a perfect singer. Greg is such an incredible musician as well and of course David and Benjamin's bass were the engine that drove the Cars ;) I love Benjamin's bass sound and playing. Loved all the songs

For those who followed the Beantown quintet in the 1980s, it's sure to come as a nostalgic experience--singer/bassist Benjamin Orr succumbed to cancer in 2000, while Todd Rundgren took Ocasek's place in 2006's "New Cars" reunion. Edited by Ocasek's son Eron, the 72-minute feature operates like a virtual scrapbook, alternating video-shot concert and backstage footage with radio interviews and stills. Consequently, as a disclaimer states at the beginning, the audio-visual quality is adequate at best. (Then again, this is a side of the band never captured by MTV.) Further, some of the bits are just plain silly, especially the dressing room antics. Fortunately, the rock-your-socks-off factor is high and there are unexpected surprises, like keyboard player Greg Hawkes's impromptu cover of the Cramps' "Human Fly." Of the performances, standouts include "My Best Friend's Girl" from 1979 and "Just What I Needed" from 1980, both recorded in Washington DC (like too many music films, locations are not identified until the end credits). uploaded this to pay tribute not only to the legendary Cars but to Ric Ocasek RIP (Richard Theodore Otcasek March 23, 1944 - September 15, 2019) and of course Benjamin Orr RIP (Benjamin "Ben" Orzechowski September 8, 1947 - October 4, 2000). The whole fanorama is still in shock after Ric's sudden death. Our sincere sympathy to his sons, his family and friends. I wish to try to continue spreading the word about this legendary band and musician and perhaps help a younger audience find out about these musicians and become new fans :) Please come and check out my Facebook page by the same title as this channel and perhaps add a like :D facebook.com/8.9.1947BenjaminOrrElectricAngelRockandRoller/
Love this video it’s So intense. Love The Cars Been Fan since 1977-78, My Favorite Band. My boyfriend’s tape I wore it out, I married that guy and bought a new cassette 37, years ago.
I saw the Cars several times live during the first two album tours 78-80. I was a big fan, but wish I would have brought my polaroid camera and bought more t shirts and merch. You dont think 45 years into the future when youre 16. I remember well Ric had this very large, cool presense onstage, but at one summer jam in 1979, we were standing front row center just feet away from Ben. He was just stunning. I am so mad I didnt get loads of photos...
You got something better than I’ll ever have, you were there! Footage would’ve been great but I think it would’ve taken from your experience of seeing them live. Everyone films everything now, so they don’t get to truly experience the moment. I absolutely love The Cars, but I was born in 79’… I didn’t get to fully appreciate them until I hit my 30’s! I have most of their albums and I still listen to them all the time. Many of their songs are the soundtrack of my life, even stemming back to my childhood days in the 80’s before I really even knew who they are! Thank you for sharing your story about seeing them live. Oh how I wish we could go back in time. Ben Orr melts my heart… I hate knowing that I’ll never get to meet him. Happy almost New Year! 🎉
Thank you for this Cars gem filled with rare footage, intimate portraits, and great Cars live performances. As noted by a fan below I would echo the underrated status of Elliot Easton on lead guitar and was pumped to see Elliot seemingly taunting Ric as he departed from the norm during a Moving In Stereo performance. When asked about his and Ben's song sharing on LP's Ric honestly replied "Ben is the chosen when a good singer is needed".....Long live all things Cars !
Thank you so much, Danny, I wish the picture quality was a bit better but I also love this gem filled with all these rarer moments. Totally agree, Elliot is so underrated , he has such great licks and he is such a classy timeless guitarist. I always am blown away when I watch their performances, time after time :) You said, ~Long live all things Cars~ so let's celebrate all of their music ! :D I am sharing another created video with audio from a concert and working on another concert video as well. Warmest regards from Tasmania, Tia :)
Thank you so much for putting this up here, it’s been so difficult to find any footage of The Cars. Especially here in the UK. Thoroughly enjoyed this. 👍
@michaelleese64 Thank you 😊, I retired 2 years ago from this channel as I had been working on various music 🎶 channels for 10 or so years and felt I needed a change. Then, someone very special to me had passed away ( UK singer/ photographer), and I created a channel in his memory. But I do try to read every comment on this channel every week or so. I became friends with Benjamin's loved ones and still feel connected and love the music. I wish that I had more time so I could create or fix videos on this channel for fans. Warm regards from sunny Tasmania 🌞, Tia 🌏 🌸🐦🦋🦘
While I did like the cars music in the 80s and beyond... I recently became even a bigger fan.... being a guitar player myself over the years my biggest Heroes were the Guitar Gods..Hendrix, Clapton etc. etc. Then recently I realized Elliot Easton is an unbelievable guitarist and should be right there in that group of great guitarists. I would like to also mention there was an unbelievable amount of artists in 70s that were so hugely influenced by The Beatles ... including Elliot and the keyboard player for the Cars...
I always dig the rockabilly riff Eliot Easton does in "My Best Friend's Girl", and Benjamin Orr's vocals - "Let's Go!". Informative film. Everything from the inevitable moments, like 18:00 when "There are some things we don't want filmed" happens. It's good that stuff is included. Why? Because it all ends up with them playing songs like, "Just What I Needed". And I can tell how much they didn't dig the interviews sometimes. Interviewer: "I forget what Eliot plays". Hawkes: "He plays a wild guitar." That's for sure. It's how they were truly brothers when Ric was painfully out-of-tune starting to play, but being who he is, didn't want to stop, and then Eliot walked over and tuned the string instantly. Beautiful! But there is for me an informative detail that answers a question I have had: Greg Hawkes at 21:08 says, seemingly (but not really) out-of-the-blue, "Maybe Eliot might be left handed." And it makes sense. Elliot's guitar teacher told him to play left handed because he is left-handed! As a left handed violin player who at 6 years old was told my teacher that I didn't want to be poking my bow in other orchestra players eyes, do you?, I can relate. "Don't cha Stop!!" Actually, for a representation of The Cars Live, this video serves well. Thank you from an Old Youth Fan.
Wow this is fantastic Tia, every bit of it! I’ve never seen this one. Thanks! I so enjoyed Lust for Kicks in the background with Elliot making his faces.
I am so glad you enjoy this dear Julene , I love this footage so much, even if the picture quality is not so great , it is so much fun to see the band members like this :) Wishing you a lovely day, love, Tia

Marsha Vlasic was an artist rep and her name is mentioned on the Unlocked DVD credits . You can read about her here @ www.vip-booking.com/news/ReadNews?id=3144&id=3144
Benjamin seemed to talk about band related stuff. Her line is something (sorry too rushed to listen now so I am just using memory) " Will you give me your word as rock and roller" or something to which Benjamin replies " Trust me" in THAT voice ;)

Produced by Ric Ocasek, Unlocked presents the Cars at their herky-jerky, hard-edged best.
I wish to try to continue spreading the word about this legendary band and musician and perhaps help a younger audience find out about these musicians and become new fans :)

The sound check for Tonight She Comes is crazy. Better than anything you'll hear today.
Who's watching in 2025 💪
Love this video it’s So intense. Love The Cars Been Fan since 1977-78, My Favorite Band. My boyfriend’s tape I wore it out, I married that guy and bought a new cassette 37, years ago.
The Cars Warehouse New Orleans 78/79 one of the best shows of My Life.
RIP Ben & Ric
Not a happy day for Ben fans. But thankful to you for this to keep him and the band alive!!!! To add: footage at 32:37 to die for 😻
Hi Nykki , sorry only found time today to reply. Yes, indeed that footage is so incredible. Warmest regards from Tasmania, Tia
❤❤❤
I did not know Ocasek wrote every song. Talented musical genius.
The best moment of this entire footage is 1:22:39 when Ben does his little dance.
That made me laugh!
🎉
Thank you for this Cars gem filled with rare footage, intimate portraits, and great
Cars live performances.
Great harmonies.
Been a fan since 78 I was 11 years old and I can remember buying it@ music plus for $4.99 rip Ben& Ric 🎸🎸
Me too.
I so wish, I had seen The Cars in concert

Me I'm 72 still can't get enough of them. Ben chewing gum and singing cracks me up, what a cutie
Always in tune...Perfection
This is amazing! Im going to see this video over and over again forever, thanks!
your channel is incredible, keep it going
@Vivian Lemos Thank you so very much for your warm and very encouraging words
This is fantastic! What a rare gem. Thank you for sharing all this great footage I’d never seen before now. Long live The Cars! They will forever be one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time. No one compares to them.

This is all so damn good. Very well done my friend. I love this phenomenal band. Still listening in 2024. Their sound is so innovative and timeless. Thanks so much for this video ❤❤❤
Thank you so much. I have retired from this channel over a year ago and am working on a personal project for a singer I knew , but lovely to see so many fans still watching the videos I uploaded. This was the reason I created the channel, to ensure the music is not forgotten and for fans to be able to see all their clips and hear their music. Lots of love from Tasmania, Tia ❤🧡❤
When Benjamin's voice goes all deep and he curls the words around you 🥰❤️💛 💝💖🍑💋🍭💘💙💜🌅 Oh my.
thank you so much for sharing it to all of us, eliot you mean all to me as a lead singer and as a humble human being.
WOW!! Ben was just a bad ass!! RIP Ben and RIC
Such a fantastic band. Always brings me up. Ty guys for making my HS years so great.
Wicked pissah. Thank you.
Blondie was definitely part of my early teen listening lexicon. Loved their sound.
Great educational video. This rocks!
Thank you very much, I am working on a website as well. Merry Christmas and best wishes for a Happy New Year 🎄 🍷 🎊 🍸 🎉 🎈 🍻 🎆 💃from sunny Tasmania, Tia :)
Fresh and original with an enduring quality⛲
No idea why, but I thought it so appealing that at the beginning during the clapping bit, Benjamin stored his pick in his mouth. 🤷🏽♀️
I still got my stub. 1982 L.I.
Wow...!!! This is awesome footage.!!! Thanks for posting this...!!
Thank you for this, this is amazing to watch.
Thank you.

Young teen went from KISS to Punk, New Wave/Ska. My uncle Deano "RIP". introduced me to their first album. Yeah This band had it all. Sept. 2024. Odd I have never seen this. Right on.
Ben checked out too early, Ric was just worn out. I know Ric and Ben are sitting on a cloud in rock'n'roll heaven, sipping on Mai Tais, surrounded by hot chicks.
❤ Love the Cars
В исполнении Бена песни Cruiser, он очень хорош, он крут.
Thank you for this Cars documentary! Fantastic concert clips! 👍

At 3:12-ish, I'd swear that was Mandy Patinkin--looking just like he does as Inigo Montoya in Princess Bride. Just an observation. ^_^
@cORRvettes80He03Me I never noticed this guy in the audience before but now you pointed him out, wow, you are so right :) Now I will never watch this again without seeing Inigo Montoya from one of my favourite movies :) Thank you, great observation !!!!! Warmest regards from really hot Tasmania, Tia :D
I thought I was the only one who noticed that!

Esa sonrisa tímida y coqueta de Ben en 1 1:13 min es maravillosa!
Oh, I met Rick and his fine model wife on Newberry Street in Boston. Looks like a praying mantis coming down the street I was like yo Rick said how are you doing guys like fucking right
Cars part of my youth. Fast cars fast women drugs alcohol survived it all greatfull to be 63 and climbing
Each of the Cars were individuals. Ichabod Crane Ric, Puff Pastry Ben, Razor Elliott, Goggles Greg and Dave the Ghost.
Unbelievable!
Now 2025
26:28 Greg Hawkes is a stone cold killer!
These guys came out when I was a freshman in HS and people were listening to them and I just didn't get "new wave". My tastes were more like Judas Priest, Sabbath, AC/DC, along those lines and now that I am older have a military career behind me...surviving all of it...I am starting to get into these bands more. Never would I have listened to DEVO but, now I find it interesting. Still will never listen to "country or western", Rap, Jazz, Opera...just 'not' going there. 🤘🤘🤘
Genius 👏👏👏
A great video of a great band?
Is this a question? 😅I would say a great video of a fantastic band 😀
