Lowry Denver [Neighborhood Tour]
Lowry is one of the newest neighborhoods in Denver. Previously occupied by the Lowry Air Force Base (pictured above) which closed in 2007, the community has been built up over the last decade. Prior to the birth of the neighborhood, the Lowry Air Force Base had existed for over 100 years. In 1887, the Jarvis Military School opened and military training began. Over 50 years later, it became an important training base during World War II and subsequently a United States Air Force base during the Cold War. It even served as the initial site of the U.S. Air Force Academy between 1955 and 1958. During the 1960s, it transformed into an Air Intelligence Training Centre. Despite its long history as an important military site, the Lowry Army Base began its phases of closure in 2007. The last remaining Air Force facility, the Air Reserve Personnel Centre, was finally moved in 2011.
