I worked 5 years in one place with a degree, 4 year degree and got a 25cent raise. Working hard with humility doesn’t grant a raise and or title.
Then you’re pretty incompetent
@@simonpereira4281 Well, if that was true. I wouldn't be in a selective graduate program. In addition, the ignorance of your statement is not only ignorance filled with arrogance. It's just plain a stupid and uneducated comment. Go look at how much retail, construction or even the medical industry pays percentage raise in the last 20 years. I'm guessing your 50+ in age?
Have you jump around to other jobs?
@simonpereira4281 not if the company's excuse is budget cuts. At my job we can stop working and the whole system will fall down with but companies don't care if they can replace you with someone with even cheaper pay.
I got a masters in engineering management a few years ago for $20k and my company paid for half of it.
If a job that requires it won’t pay for it, find a job that will.
I have a masters in eng management from Purdue and it did not help me in my career. Luckily the company I worked at covered most of the tuition.
Studying for my ChFC and CFP designation, and my current lesson said that grad student debt is masked but a huge culprit on our current crisis.
An average graduate student’s annual federal loans have ballooned from $10k (1995) to $23k (2015). This is compared from $3.8K to $6.7k annually for undergrad.
He might as well finish the degree since he is already a year in. Me personally, I won’t go back to college if I was making 70k a year. Don’t increase your work hours till after you are done with college. Graduate first.
I start my master's degree after labor day. I work full time and will be attending part-time online. I'm utilizing employer reimbursement and paying out-of-pocket. It's also a state school.

@Nuella’s Nuggets, Solid game plan!
Get it done, pay it off, or do it part time and take full advantage of the employer benifit over the next two years. Get it done and move up. Where Im at that degree gets you $140k minimum
2:57 rice and beans u don’t go inside a restaurant unless it’s your second job
As a recruiter in a fortune 100 company where I recruit for these technical roles, I can tell you that a MBA will not get him the management job. Is he currently managing teams? Is he leading anyone? His Company not gonna take him from $70k into a management role paying $170k
Lies
@@Mickeyz17 ???
I believe he meant 70k to 100k😂 but it increases his chances of getting the manger positions, obviously it’s not guaranteed
If he’s the right color it will
@@thesig301 well it’s reality. Look at colleges. If you are Asian you will have a harder time getting accepted vs whites with the same grades and if your black you can get get accepted with lower grades than whites and Asians. I suppose the colleges think they are helping but it’s unfair and racist
Speaking from experience you do not need a masters to move into a management position. You need to prove yourself in your current role, and when a spot opens up, apply for it. Or, if you wish to change companies, explain how your technical aptitude will provide value to them in a management function. If you come across strong in your interview, resume and application will more often than not get you into a management position
The mistake wasn't buying the house, it was going back to college with a 70k job already in hand.
Waste of money. I discerned an mba or engineering management grad Degree as well. As an engineer, it depends but most of the time all you need experience in the field and great communication skills and grit to move into a management role. Honestly if the guy is a civil or mechanical all he needs is a professional engineering license and he’s good to go. Waste of money
@Anthony Lozano I've heard that it can depend on the branch of engineering a person goes into. However, the engineers I've personally known have skills that they can use to make money in other ways -- like side hustles.
I agree. My brother has a bachelor's in electrical engineering but mainly works at fixing computers, working with software etc. So an undergrad degree is very useful and flexible, and you should move up to management with it and experience.
If you want just a support job then you don’t need it. If you want to work for a company and move up the management later than you need the grad degree.
Do you know what is crazy? You need a degree to work for a business but you don't need a degree to start a business.
@3:49 lmao dave was so fed up
I don’t get why a engineering management master will cost 60k. You can find a good state public school for that degree in state tuition you should be paying no more than 20k.
I’d rather just go back to community college and experiment with a new career with little to no money.
Great call and suggestion. Here is what I have done in life:
1. Start from the end: Find out if I study X then what kind of jobs I get to do?
2. How much salary that pays?
3. What cities and states do I have to live in for being able to do those jobs?
4. Then think about income vs loan while choosing school. For tier 2 Universities, its all the same!! Employers care about your skills unless you are a Stanford CS grad (not music, sorry for being harsh)
5. Housing: Dont get married to a spot where you are studying. First find a job and a location where you can switch at least 3 jobs and there only you make your 10 yrs base by buying a home.
I hope that helps. Thanks.
Masters degree - Not needed for Engineering Management , Especially unless the scene is you have been working for 15 years and the only blocker between that promo is a degree!! Lets go!

I think if he takes the PE exam and pass it that would be a great start instead of having a master.
Yes, I was told by multiple engineers that a masters is a waste of time unless its cheap or someone is paying for it ,a PE is is a way better to have than a masters because you can sign off on engineering documents which is the key role for engineering managers
That mute button is 🧊 cold, man
What do you expect? He’s old and stubborn and doesn’t have any sympathy for the actions of the newer generation. It is a pretty outlandish move on his end to just mute the caller and talk over him but that’s how he handles people like that.
@@TheAck201 True, but like I said he’s old fashioned.
@@TheAck201 probably because he understands that this generation has the softest men that ever existed on this earth.
@@terranesha5784 That too.
he has no patience for a caller when they start rationalizing something that blatantly contradicts his baby steps, and the mute button is the moment he recognizes that a direct conversation with that caller is no longer productive and he switches to teaching the broader audience of listeners. I think it's a great move. It's his show. All a caller has to do is listen to the show for a couple weeks before they call to know how this works.
If the company is willing to pay $30k to help him get an advanced degree, they obviously value advanced degrees. Get the the degree, get the promotion, and don't sweat the debt. $60k is like a expensive car, just make payments over 4-5 years.
Many (most?) job ads ask for a degree OR experience. I think the caller should build up the experience, prove himself with the company. He can slowly work on his master's degree by cash-flowing it over time.
As an engineer 1 year into my own masters (paid cash)...I can tell you thinking he can take sidework while in school is pure delusion for 95% of engineering jobs.
50-60 hr weeks as a young engineer "crushing it" plus 20-30 for school. 90 hr weeks. Ive slept 5-6 hrs per night doing exactly that.
Im sorry but without a trip to an early grave thats not feasible.
Dave and Ken are always flippant about side hustles but here theyre especially out of their depth for this scenario
Maybe he falls into the 5% kind of engineering job. Just sayin’ :)
I actually love rice & beans😂😂

Im am an engineer and you don’t need A masters to be in a Management role.
I'm doing MA in Ancient and Classical History and will graduate debt-free, just like when I tested out of college with a BA.
Does it matter where you go to school? No dave ramsey bots. Real people in the industry.
Masters is the new bachelors and the only way to break past $75k and into $100k+ for a comfortable salary job. Speaking from experience helping thousands of colleagues get jobs in public health. Masters masters masters‼️
I have no degree and make 115k a yr in IT. MAsters definitely aren’t required in all fields .

I’m currently using my GI Bill for grad school and I know some companies offer tuition reimbursement programs or something similar. It might take a while to complete but could definitely be a worthy pursuit if you play it the right way.
This can only be done for graduate degree if you’re an officer right?
@@thesig301 I don't believe so. Make sure you have the qualifying active duty time required (and educational requirements) and the world is your oyster as far as your education is concerned.

I had buddies who got Engineering Management degrees from Arkansas state online for $25 a semester. 60k for the same degree is laughable

I don't think he needs a master's. That's just a piece of paper. He just needs on the job experience and the personality to be in a management or leadership role.
Sorry but Ken is Wrong about not needing an Masters for Many leadership positions. Dave is correct that the graduate degree doesn't have to cost as much as many people pay for it.
Really? I am working on my MBA online through a local, reputable college. I did my research. My all in costs will be less than $15k. There were several at or near that price point.

If you don't have a college degree the only way you are going to be able to make good money is to start your own business. You need a degree to work for a business but you don't need one to start a business.
An airline mechanic makes $90k-$160k or more with no degree and full company benefits including free lifetime travel benefits any class and mega 401k.
My gf works for a bank, no degree and makes 90k! She’s currently looking to change companies to make $110! I’m a garbage man, no degree and I make $100k! There’s jobs out there but ppl don’t kno how to find them
Those jobs are definitely not in florida. There are no garbage truck men who make $90k unless they are in upper management and have a degree.
Elite school MBAs cost $100 - $200K (or more).
Another caller that has not done their homework before signing up for more schooling and loans.
Serious question. How do you qualify for a mortgage if you have student load debt?
There's a debt to income ratio you have to be over in order to not be accepted for mortgage
Don’t buy a house with student loans. That’s a really stupid thing to do
You didn’t tell him to look for scholarships, grants, and employer reimbursement programs.

In Dave’s world, buying a house while in debt is like someone saying “I want to learn how to iron a dress shirt, but I want to do it outside in a hurricane.” And Dave’s like, “Ok, step one, come inside from the hurricane so you have some stability and can get dry.” He isn’t going to bother arguing that point for very long with someone so insistent.

These people have to live in the real world. Most jobs do care about degrees.

So what if it takes fives years to pay off, instead of one or two.
Investing in your education is always worth it.

@@jimmymcgill6778 I agree that 130k def not.. 60k might not be worth it as well… especially a engineering management, it doesn’t carry the same weight at an MBA.. for me my salary increased by 100k, the main drawback it was FT so no income..
"Most jobs care about degrees".
Do you know why? Because we are dumb enough as a society to let lazy, tone deaf HR people get away with that garbage philosophy. I can see why people embellish or just outright lie on their resumes. Stop the madness people.
If the employer is paying for half, he’s paying $30k for the degree, not $60k.
He was talking about undergrad debt too
You should really research how much more income you will make with this degree before diving head first in. Not assume it.
If everyone waited to buy a home debt free .Nobody would buy one.
Why bother to ask questions if you don’t want to hear the answers.
Best advice “You live off nothing”
This caller is doing fine. Why pick on him?
Doing a 60k master degree was kinda silly
Crazy how some people will jump into more debt without doing any research! Going to grad school, accruing even more debt, without even knowing what his return on investment would be? If your answers are, "I think, not sure, I heard, seems like", you need to get better answers.
You don't get into management by doing a degree with management in the title. If that were the case, everyone would do it.
