I kind of wish that Sony wouldn't stop selling their real PS3 controllers.
Actually Walmart still sells them on their website and they're actually real controllers not fake bulshit controllers.
I had recently bought a PS3 controller from Newegg turned out to be fake so then I had to replace it and ended up buying it from Walmart's website and thankfully it was a real controller.
Because I was using my PS4 controller for a while and I really didn't want to do that I just didn't feel like I was playing my PS3 I felt like I was playing on my PS4 and the reason I kept my PS3 is because PS4 isn't backwards compatible. So for a long time I had to use my PS4 controller on my PS3 and it just didn't feel right but felt like I was playing on my PS4 and not my PS3.

Look for people selling consoles with their games and controllers included, ask em if they are willing to sell one. I am doing the same as I smashed mine during cod MW2 :/
Finding a new dualshock 3 today, is difficult. Yes I have a PS4 but i am still using my ps3 every now and then.
The counterfeits have gotten even better in recent years. I got one recently with no incorrect text on the box with accurate logos. Look out for off center Sony labels on the controller itself, off center home button logo, and poor quality usb logo, Dualshock 3, and Sixaxis labels.

So here's a rundown of how to tell if a ps3 controller is fake:
1) Blue tint on the fron is different (I'd say the design looks more faded than the original).
2) Says that the system must be updated.
3) Faulty Sony logo
4) The box cuts are different
5) Top of the box is blue (contrary to the original black)
6) The analog stick clicks louder than the original.
I will check for this next time. If I'm buying online, they should tell me what's the color of the top of the box.

Just bought a White PS3 controller off of Ebay. Tested briefly it on my PS3 and it worked as it is a gift. It seemed to do all the things a genuine PS3 controller would do. Once I synced it with my PS3 it would turn on and off my console. Like I said it is a gift so don't know how long it will last but aside of the "sofeware" typo, all of the red flags that you show in your video are apparent with the controller I just received.

And one thing to say. The Sixaxis feature in the fake Controller don't work correctly. I tried play Heavy Rain with a a fake controller (at that time i don't know that was a fake, but now i'm very sure), and the sixaxis features don't work. And some PS2 games don't work with that controller.

I just received mine from eBay and the exact packaging. I already threw the box away, but did question the package flimsiness and how light the controller was in comparison. I also questioned a FPS game I bought. It just didn’t feel right and I was messing with the sensitivity settings. I went to leave feedback and the item has been removed and no longer allowed. Will this harm my system in anyway?

I recently got one at first I thought it was original later I realised that the action buttons and shoulder buttons are different then I found your video on online thank you so much
I paid 40 bucks for a fake one on a sketchy store.. When I opened it up, I realized that the plastic felt really cheap, and that most of the plastic was matte black instead of the usual reflective plastic. The analogs are way too stiff. And I also noticed that the back of the controller had 2 peices of tapes covering the Sony logo and the serial number. Looks like they corrected the typo on the back of the box, but the top part of the box was blue. Thanks for letting me know

You can get adapters which allow you to use Lehr controllers. Check Nexilux 3in1 controller adapter or controller for PC/Switch /PS3 or Game genie adapter
I accidentally bought a fake one just like the one here. Is there a way to fix the stiffness of the analog sticks? Playing a COD or any shooters is impossible because of the way the movement is in the game. Running, shooting etc. And I didn't get mine online. I got it from movie trading company

I bought a fake one too, and played with it for a while, and it seemed off, like the dead zone on the thumb sticks, and the most fucked up thing, was that the plastic seemed to melt, i mean my fingerprints were imprinted on the bottom of the controller. And then i plugged it into my pc and it said it was fake. Ever since them i havent been able to find a controller, and i payed full price for the first one. Its bullshit, the dualshock 3 is the best controller ever made, objectively.

Does the thumbsticks feel a bit flat and rough? Mine do and also makes that loud cheap clicking sound. Although my box doesn't have the typo it does have the light blue top. I can tell it's fake anyway, I've had plenty of duel shock 3 controllers. What can I do? Should I report it to the seller or ebay? Can I get some kind of compensation? @ST fero You can aim but they are really stiff analog controls. It's hard to be accurate with them say if you're aiming for an enemies head.

Before watching this video and seeing the plethora of things that you can spot to tell that it’s a fake the first thing that told me it was fake was in FPS’s it’s hard to be accurate and HONNE in on something you’re shooting at and do so accurately. When I was new to FPS games I thought it was because I wasn’t that good at shooters but then after six months to a year of experience I realized that it had to be the controller and not so much me. Now I know it’s the controller… Not me!
The dpad looks different too, on each controller. The bad part about the fake controller is the dual axis it won't work I got a ps3 controller and playing the last of us you have to shake the controller when the flashlight is empty but it doesn't register which kinda breaks the game.
I too bought the EXACT fake controller....but didn't realize it until my analog stick just starting reading in the wrong direction while playing a golf game..I was like "WTF"???...I thought it felt a little lighter in weight than the original....then after watching your vid and looking at my packaging I'd knew I'd been had....thanks for the vid...thumbs up.

Yes there are a hell of a lot of fake PS 3 controllers out and they mostly look genuine, I have a suggestion that might help people looking for the real deal, if you can, look closely at the select/start buttons the words should be in the middle of the buttons not to one side (fake it's very obvious to spot) having said that i always buy mine fully refurbished from well known companies, good luck out there everyone in your quest for the real deal
The box for the one I bought looks just like yours but it has the Sofeware typo removed, meaning that it's spelled correctly. I bought mine off eBay for $30 and the giveaway was the loud clicking of the joystick but also it's a terrible controller, it's just not the same as the original. For example, moving around in COD is hard, I'll move the joystick and the character will make a very fast and sharp movements, not smooth at all like with the original controller. So this made me suspicious that maybe it was a fake and I found this video and sure enough, it's just like yours with the light blue top, etc.

I searched "PS3 Wireless controller" on amazon Canada, and every single one did NOT have the Sony or Playstation Logo. and instead says P3.
I just got one off of ebay, too, and it ended up being fake! Not only were the controls really stiff and unresponsive (and the motion sensing was horrible), but the material and some of the font was oh-so-slightly off (I had to really stare between the two in my hand.) It took longer than usual to connect to the system, too. The box had the same issues yours did, save the typos. The top of the box was blue. D: I'm trying to get a refund now (since they advertised as real.) I'm getting it in-store next time. Thanks for this video!
I ordered a brand new blue playstation controller 2 years ago, and though it may have worked good at first but then some of the buttons have stopped working and instead of trying to fix it liked the videos in the tutorials would, I poured some hand sanitizer on it seeped into the controller, and it managed to work for a while, but then it started to act up again, and I didn't have a screwdriver small enough to unscrew the screws, so I just gave up and broke it and threw it away. and now my second black controller doesn't work 'cause its been sitting in the dust for too long, but luckily I have a gold one. And I'm glad I ordered 2 when I did, but just recently I ordered a silver one, hopefully it works just like the other one later on in life.
I bought a fake PS3 controller from China, it didn't arrive in the estimated time frame and the seller didn't respond to my messages so I got a full refund, then it arrived a few days later.
It's not as good as the real deal, but hey, can't argue with getting a free controller, especially from a scammer.

They are likely refurbished and not the good kind; usually a fake 3rd party controller or old, broken down Sony original, but relaminated with a sony logo and black sony button decal with authentic looking packaging (look for misspellings, a missing decal, different dimensions like weight or cut lines and angles being higher or lower than they are on real packaging, a blue top instead of black, etc. or it is used and resealed. Take a close look, if you can, at the seal and see if there are any noticeable gaps between it and the box lid and/or dust/crud stuck to the adhesive.
I just bought one that came in real looking packaging that was fake, so this is how I learned.
You can see MANY fakes on ebay currently. They'll often say things like "Ships from USA!" and indicate that 50+ have been sold, and have duplicate listings polluting the search results. And the price will often be ~$20 for a new in-box controller.
They might "ship from USA," but the controller is likely still imported over from mass production cheap knock off factory first. They just keep a stock of them in the USA to say they "ship from USA!" to try to inspire buyer confidence. Laughable.
Disgusting. Unacceptable. And vexing to me. Sony, why have you allowed this to happen to a console that still has an active community and which ought to be supported? If you don't protect your proud heritage of quality gaming hardware, it will hurt your reputation, AND leave money on the table which will go from the pockets of Sony PS3 enthusiasts into the hands of detestable scammers, instead of to Sony itself. Your choice, Sony: manufacture more PS3 controllers and make more money while keeping your fans loyal and happy throughout the years, or don't.
I didn't buy a PS4. No backwards compatibility? F that. The backwards compatibility of the PS2 is one reason (of many) why it's Sony's best system in the PS line (in my view). Support yer old sh*t.

My legitimate ps3 controller stopped working. I'm forced to use the two fake controllers I have now, which absolutely suck.
One vibrates, but DOESN'T have a tilt axis, plus the its analog sticks are uncomfortably stiff. The other one HAS a tilt axis, but it doesn't vibrate. 😡 I have to switch from time to time, depending on the game/level. 😩
Yup, I can't play any fps games like Call of Duty with the fake controllers, it's almost fuckin impossible to aim properly. The sticks are atrocious

Hi just a quick question for you how old is your controller? if it's several years old the sixaxis can fail, check out TH-cam for fixing it or try this one insert a pin (blunt) into the reset button hole, it just might kick start the sixaxis again hope this has helped

exactly. i have gone though 4 myself. my currently one i can run properly. the clicking on the left handle doesnt work right. and it's not like they make them to last. it maybe just worth getting the fake one. as long as it works rather spend 30 then 50/60. even the used ones are like 40 bucks and they barely last a month lol
it seems like the analogs were put together by microsoft because the controllers end up screwing up by themselves .
usually the ebay shyt dont last. i got one myself, and the middle button broke a week in, another with x button. the size was off, it just know it isnt right. my buddy traded with me and he sold his system off for 50. so i got a great used for ebay price. and sad thing is, the controller prices still dont go down much. i current use a wired controller and its holding for me. i cracked it once months back raging but that was the best one for me. only old thing is the middle button does work, but cant power the ps3. but i can shut down. still enjoy it.

These ones in the big blue packaging may be fake but arent that bad . I mean its the best you can find compared to the others . Some actually dont even have buttons
Now I'm starting to question myself about the PS3 controller I got 2 years ago for Christmas to replace my old one.
I recently bought one, but blue. There is no spelling error on "software", but the top of the box is light blue! Is it fake or not? Maybe a variation because of the different color of the controller itself, because yours is black. Not so sure about the other stuff you mentioned and I don't want to open it, because if it is fake, I want to return it.

I had a fake one, it works well just like a real ps3 controller. but it didn't last that long 4-5 months tops, the sticks starts peeling off, and the triggers and bumpers starts making these squicky noise.
Just bought a fake Chinese controller off of eBay as well. On my box the sofeware typo was fixed. The top of the box was still blue. Opened it up and compared to another brand new PS3 controller and it feels obviously cheaper in plastic quality, button press, etc.
Can these listings be reported to ebay as fraud? Or is there no recourse?
Sadly I think I bought a used fake from a games store before knowing this was a thing. The thumb sticks broke. And these are still all over ebay. If it's new and cheap then it's fake. Look at the higher priced ones and check for signs of it being fake. Might be better off with real third party controller. Thanks for sharing.

I bought one off ebay, the buttons seemed to be in perfect working order, but when i tried to charge in on my pc(dont have my ps at the moment) it charged fine for about half an hour then stopped, sinse then it will only charge for upto a minute(hasn't had a first full charge yet) you see i wasn't sure if it just didnt want to charge with my pc or laptop becaue i never had my ps to test, but then i thought if it charges for a bit there must not be a problem charging it on pc or laptop. came across this and the boxing is the the same or pretty much as mine, requested a refund.

I was about to buy one off FB marketplace. I mentioned to a independent gaming store dealer, and he pointed out the lack of sticker indicating controller colour, and the price being so low, when legit ones go for $80-200. Glad I did digging, or else I would have been scammed. Looking at this vid, I could be wrong, but I think the directional buttons on the fake are closer to the center, than the real one.

I have 4 PS3 controllers. 2 blacks, 1 candy pink and 1 metallic silver. One of the blacks started to act strangely. When I played Borderlands granades were thrown without me pressing anything. R1 I think. Other buttons were going crazy too. Wonder why? I think this is the one I got with one of my used PS3.
There are rumours that PS5 will be backward compatible with PS3 too, but I'm not convinced. So...

Nowadays, there’s not a lot of original PS3 controllers for sale online. If they did, it’s expensive but worth it. It can be risky if you’re paranoid about scammers.
Most sellers that I have seen online just put that “original” or “genuine” on the product title just to attract those clueless customers to buying one without doing any checks on the comments to see if it’s legit or not.

Danny B Tech you can use your ps4 controller wired and even wirelessly on the ps3 XMB, it's a little tricky to set up it wireless though

U can tell easier by noticing if the top is black or blue. If its blue it’s fake.
ChaosDaKid The last remote I bought at a store was in a blue box, and yeah it was the real thing. It had the digital camo on the remote. It didn't last as long as the original controllers, but I'm just happy if I get anything to work. I'm 62 and I still love video games. I still have a SNES, Sega Genesis, a couple of PS 2's, several PS 1's, I wonder if the controllers still work. The games I play on the PS3 are actually PS1 games, but the PS1 doesn't get you access to other places.
This helped me out in 2019. I have a PS4 and PS3, but my PS3 controllers are bad.
i bot a non-sony wireless controller for 15$ off ebay and it works totally fine except there's a small rubber piece missing for the reset button. The r3 and l3 work fine and all the buttons function normally. The fake one was $8 wired controller. the r3 and l3 pushed down too far and the dpads didn't work good without pressing harder. i took it apart , so i cudnt return it, but the inside was way diffrent and cheap. it has a brown board across the inside and is harder to put back together. the r2,l2 buttons dont really hook onto anything

Here's something totally non-PlayStation. I have a Xbox 360 controller that, when I leave batteries in it, sucks the juice out of them by the next morning. I tried removing the battery pack but then again, "by the next morning" the batteries are "again" dead. Do you think it's fake?

I buy allot of my stuff online, but VERY rarely do i buy my stuff used or from sellers i don't trust to begin with. Right now i either buy from my games or games accessories from amazon or from from a local retailer. If i buy used its mainly games. The only other thing ive bought used on the internet lately was a used SNES controller.

I know it's really hard to find original Ps3 controllers and my last resourse to get one oroginal .......... GameStop.
Weren't the real ones shipped in a red and white box?
One thing that gets most fake products away if the price. Generally they try to price these things and much much lower price making you think you got yourself a deal of a lifetime. People do your research before you buy anything if that price seems suspicious and lower than normal that do your research before purchasing it because you just might very well be purchasing something fake. I myself recently had this happen with a PS3 controller because I wanted to replace the controller for my PS3 because it was so old so I go up on NewEgg thinking okay this $20 controller probably is legit it's been around long enough that I believe it's around $20 now. And I was thinking okay $20 ain't that bad for a system that's over 12 years old now I was thinking PS3 controllers can't be that expensive anymore so I place the order and then as soon as I get to the PS3 controller from Newegg right away before I even took it out of the package I could tell it was not real. If you've used original PS3 controller for as long as I have you know the difference between the 2. So I was like you know not a big deal I'm sure it will work just fine I go to plug it in sync it with my PS3 everything works just fine from there then I go to load up a game to try it out and holy shit was it the most sensitive controller I have ever used in my life. Usually on Call of Duty I usually play with a sensitivity of about 6 with this controller I had to turn my sensitivity all the way down and that still made no difference. Seriously it was a piece of junk so I know upon a Walmart and see if they sell PS3 controllers and they do and they sell them for $40 and they actually have real reviews where Newegg didn't and I bought the stuff from Newegg before I never had any issues with getting fake stuff from them before. So I checked Walmart they sell them for $40 still what you do to me is a little ridiculous for a controller that's over 12 years old now. So as of right now I'm stuck using my PS4 controller on my PS3 which is a bummer because I want to be able to use a PS3 controller on my PS3 not my PS4 controller on my PS3.
I just got hosed on one of these. Feels like shit in my hands. The button travel is SOOOO LONNNNGGGGG
They also have a completely different circuit board inside; The OEM one has a white plastic frame to hold the battery in place, while the fake is double stick taped to the circuit board; when you take a real one apart, the L and R 1 and 2 buttons are attached to the front cover of the controller; the fake has the 2 buttons slightly affixed to the back cover with two flimsey springs and it's a real bitch to get back together again. I also noticed that on the fake one, the 4 LED's will never stop flashing during a charge even after the battery is fully charged, and if you use a charging station for two controllers, popping the controller out of the dock will automatically start the PS3 console. The reset hole on the back of the fake is also smaller and the reset button is far down inside the body and hard to reach, where the OEM push button reset is almost flush with the hole and very easy to push. I got stuck with two of these POS fakes. They do work, but the build quality is very suspect.

Just opened mine up today and clocked this too, I paid 27£ for this sh*t and it already broke on me 3 months on

@@Legendinfarno On the up side, PS4 controllers will work wirelessly on the PS3, and they are still being manufactured so not much chance of getting a bogus one. You lose some functions like SixAxis and vibration, and it may not work with all games, but it is a real Sony OEM controller, and, IMHO, a much improved one.
I bought one in store, it has no typo yet the top of the box is blue and another thing is that the start and select words are off centered from the buttons. Is it fake?
Hi YES 100% FAKE Sony original controllers are not that sloppy in their design and would never let it pass their quality control checks, just compare a picture of a genuine Sony manufactured controller to yours if it differs in any shape or form you know it's a fake,i hope this has helped you, return the fake and get your hard earned money back, hey if you are okay with it then happy days

Bought one on eBay and it turn out to be knockoff listed as genuine. i returned it back to the seller.
I'm not an avid gamer, but needed a remote replacement and purchased one of those cheap ones which are every where. Now when playing MLB 16, I can't spot the ball in the strike zone because the damned stick does not respond until it's pushed all the way left or right. In other words, it sucks and I'll have to find a real one.

Max Nope, if I did, I would spend the money for it. I'm sure there are refurbished ones, but I am so suspicious of those, and I don't care what the item is, "refurbished" makes me nervous.
