This guy took apart a U240E while sleeping with a blindfold on. Like 100 screws and bearings in the basket… and he knows where each one goes. Crazy good.
At 12:30 he determines these steels area toast, then takes the planet out and sees a pin on the planet has worked loose so 'our gear train is done.' Only a pro has the knowledge to discern this kind of key detail.
Hi sir, I have a 2009 Toyota Camry, 2.4L, U240E Transmission Experiencing two issues: 1. Hesitation to accelerate in 2nd gear: 4-5 sec delay, then sudden acceleration. 2. Reverse gear hesitation & vibration: requires revving to engage, vibrates backward with check engine warning lights. Seeking your expertise. Thanks!
If this is before a rebuild, it sounds like it is time fora rebuild. Good chance the planetaries have come apart in it. Do you know what the codes are in the system?
Is it normal for these transmissions to whirr/make a faint whine when accelerating from 1st to 2nd gear? As soon as it shifts into 2nd and beyond it’s dead quiet. Only 1st to 2nd whine then no more noise. Cold or hot doesn’t matter. 150k miles on trans, fluids been changed every 30k miles since new, filter has been replaced once about a month ago at the same time that I did the 150k mile transmission drain and fill… Been making the noise for maybe 3 months now but no change in the way it shifts or runs other than the noise.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission Many thanks for answer. My gearbox change and I can say very well. Just SLIP on load...i mean when I press gas pedal brutal , on take over , etc. TODAY I find out that I need for sure torque converter because on trafic light I got very bad idle and shake on all R D N. After I start and drive get back to smooth. PROBABLY the clutch plate from the torque converter stuck on the turbine and after a bit idrive get back on normal position. I INTEND TO GIVE DOWN GEARBOX SOON AND SEND THE CONVERTER TO REBUILD . What you recomend to do also on the gearbox...domething easy maintenance ( except change filter) as long I have the gearbox down? I am affraid to dismalt all and inspect ...I will not put all back togeter. IF IS ANYTHING EASY WHAT I CAN DO PLEASE ET ME KNOW! IF not I just fit the rebuild converter and see if SLIP anymore. If yes...give down again.. MANY THANKS AND SORRY THAT I AM ANOYNG . I APRECIATE A LOT YOUR WORK !
That is not going to be the converter causing the slip at heavy throttle. Could be the cause of the shake at idle. Like you said the clutch partially applied. You can pull the back cover of and the first drum that is there will have the directs in it. Check the ring lands and the drum. Here is the rebuild video. It is similar to this The direct drum is a little different on this unit. th-cam.com/video/XJ9jZK4axVY/w-d-xo.html
@@CurmudgeonTransmission Hi again and thank you so much for answer ! Do you think DIRECT CLUCH is problem and that wy my gearbox slip when I press throtle? I mean for me I feel like a slip clutch. When I go up to hill and try to go faster, also create slip . When I go with the car on valley gears change really well and all problems gone....of course no load. If is only this may be I am lucky because on ALPHARD may be I can acces this from LH of the car under the wing. I can take the engine mount off and I can give the cover down . Do I need to take also the two metalic pipes, transport lines?
Hard to say. Planetaries coming apart is the biggest problem on these units. Just the one tube that is closest to the drum. The bracket that holds it in holds both.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission Thank you for replying! The transmission works perfectly though. Would that be the case if planets or diff are damaged/worn? Also, do you recommend changing transmission filter and oil or do you feel it is too risky on older transmissions? The oil isn’t burn or anything and transmission works fine.
@@dadadadada4974 I have seen them work when they are first starting to fail. Fluid changing can create problems after a certain point. Problem is you don't know when that is. You either need to do it regularly or not at all.
I have a CELICA GTS AUTOMATIC with the same gearbox U240E . When i put on D gear the car goes forward for 100 meters and then stops moving .When i put reverse the car moves for 300 meters and then stops ! Could u advice of what might be the problem please ??
I don't have a video on the U240but the U151 is similar.Transtar and WIT for parts. Links are in the description. th-cam.com/video/XJ9jZK4axVY/w-d-xo.html
You can swap the 3 pinion with a 4 pinion planet and weld the pins in place. But in the sense that I am pretty sure you are talking about. Not that I am aware of.

Hi again ! SUPER VIDEO ! What symptoms have a U241E gearbox with direct clutch faulty ?
Thanks. No reverse and 3rd & 4th.

Do you know if any part in the U240E that would create a buzzing sound on deceleration/letting off gas?
Have not run into that one yet. Noises are hard to diagnose even when you are there to hear them. Possibly planets or diff.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission Thanks! Would a clogged transmission filter cause buzzing noise? It seems to be less when fully warmed up.
Usually a clogged filter will buzz cold and then the transmission will quit moving as it warms up. But I have never heard one buzz on decel only.

Possibly clogged filter from torque converter and/or gear train failure.
And what do i do to fix it ?@@CurmudgeonTransmission

Just curious. Can these be rebuilt stronger than stock?

I guess they went with a used trans. How are you going to find a RELIABLE used trans, for a 20 year old car?
Yes. They found themselves one.
👍
