Lee is a man’s man. I love this family.
Good job diagnosing the problem with the generator! Many times I have found the problem to be that the guy before me didn't assemble properly. A 9k generator with only a thousand hours on it is definitely worth a carton of beer and a dinner. Plus your labor, can't forget that.
I'm also glad to see the dagger board going up and down. Well done, Sir! ❤👍
What a hoot. I've commented before that if I had a sailboat I would want Lee on as a mate to fix things. Sooooo, let's see. A case of beer and Dinner versus $14,000. Which one would you do? Fascinating and educational video Lee. Thanks for the lesson. Today I had a problem. I took a couple of hours to analyze and think about it and five minutes to fix what I thought would take hours. It pays to slow down, think, and then fix it. If it took you fourteen hours to fix it you made $1,000 an hour! NOW, get that dive compressor with all of the money you saved. It's enjoyable watching you guys.
Boring? FWIW... That was totally riveting.
It's the kind of problem solving episode that informs, entertains AND educates!
Keep it up and thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
One word for Lee's problem solving ability. MacGyver!! Good on you mate.
I never doubted the Cabin for a second! Thanks for sharing.
A tenacious sailor is a successful sailor. Good going!
You have to love it when a plan comes together.
Yes so good
Well done. First class diagnosing. At the start of my career one of my colleagues bought a generator. The engine was out of a tank (yes, a BIG generator), very reluctant to start but when it did he could not stop it! Turned out the lube oil system had some external lines and one had been connected as fuel. It stopped when the engine blew up.
Well done....... Never heard of this type of deisel leak before. A big win. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Additionally, the control gauge slowly depletes your generator battery since it is always on. I wired a on/off switch on the positive wire on the back of the round guage panel to prevent that.
I totally get what you have gone through on this gen set! When I purchased my sailboat 2 years ago, it came with a 9kw Northern Lights gen set that kept overheating. I hired a local mechanic who ended up changing a perfectly good impeller and then wanted to change a fuel solenoid. I kicked him off the job and started digging into it myself. I tested the thermostat and found it to be working as it should. After reinstalling the thermostat, I ran it again and noticed some black bits in the anti-siphon loop. I ended up removing about a half cup full of old impeller bits! Once these were removed, it runs flawlessly! Someone in the past (PO or some yard mechanic) changed an impeller that was obviously broken apart and never bothered to find and clear out the broken off pieces! They just installed a new impeller and called it good. The gen set passed the survey because it wasn’t run long enough for it to get up to temp!
Bottom line - if you are going to be a live aboard cruiser, you have to be able to diagnose and correctly fix problems. Lee has these skills in spades and is not afraid to tackle even the most complex problems. Hats off!
What a fabulous addition, fingers crossed you can get it installed and all working, love this channel
Thanks so much!
The "Happy Dance"!!👍👍
Well done Skipper, smart.
Great job, man....we are more similar than we are different...that happy success shimmy at the end...I know that feeling. Beats being an accountant or a banker every time...good job, Lee.
The Paguro wiring harnesses are an afterthought. I had the "water proof connector" that plugged into the generator case corrode out one year after buying my genset and the retailer said that I could make my own harness and the warranty would still be honored.
McGiever extrodinaire ! YOU KILLED IT !
I don't know if I'm saving you a lot of unnecessary hassle, but: In the US, 3 phase power is called 208V because that's the voltage as measured between any two phases. If you measure the voltage between a single phase and neutral, you get 120 volts. That's for sources that have a neutral (Y-configuration, as opposed to Delta configuration). So you *might* have everything you need without a complicated converter.
What I've just described isn't any different for standard "single-phase" house wiring, which is 240 volts when measured between the two "hot" leads, but 120 volts when measured between one hot lead and neutral.
I guess it wouldn't surprise me that you have something different, since it's an Italian manufacturer - but it's worth asking.
Awesome! Congrats on your cool generator.
a bit of Aussie ingenuity, well done
It’s always a simple thing. But not everyone is capable of thinking simply. My mind goes first to the worst case scenario. Determination, and the ability to consider the likely hood of issues that could be causing the problem. Congratulations!
I am love watching your adventures, I'm over the moon for you guys that you have a winner with the generator. The work you put in to upgrade and fix your boat is super impressive and I wish you guys all the best.
The Generator is WAY beyond my Pay Grade😜 Happily, not for our Captain…A new Generator for some Beer👍 Continue to Stay Safe and Enjoy 😎
Wooohooo - testing under load prior to going in (low risk) - but Lee has circled the wagons. Great episode!
Yes! Thank you!
Great job! Love your mechanical abilities!
Thank you! Cheers!
The episode was filled with smiles that never came to frowning. Good cheer and a full belly for an A+ acquisition. What's not to be thankful for?
Well done Lee. I'm sure you replaced the oil/diesel mix with good oil but just a heads up. Great find for a case of beer!!
Well done captain and an amazing support team........
Hot damn Sam... You now have a 9K generator... It don't get much better than that.
Love seeing the genset up and running! Is that generating at 50 or 60 HZ? Something to keep in mind when converting between US and European electrical. It mostly matters in appliances with AC motors (such as an AC watermaker or an aircon) as they'll either run faster or slower depending on what HZ theyre designed for. A lot of everyday electronics and appliances don't care these days.
Congrets to getting the generator work! Same thought concerning the frequency. Transforming to 110 may not work with some appliances.
Excellent work!
Good job, Lee. 💪
Bravo Lee! Beautiful Diagnostics! can't wait to see the Install! Will There Be A Dive Compresser Under Load Soon?
Nice work Lee. I’d be wearing your lucky Alvey jumper more often!. Mighty fine reels.
Merry Christmas and Happy and a smooth Sailing 2024. Luv the channel
Excellent! Well done!
I certainly made the same choice if in front of me. Especially if the issue was intermittent engine issues.
Lee certainly is a keeper! Cheers.
Yeah he is 😍
Neat. Well done.
Whose a clever boy then ........ 😁😁👍👍
Brilliant work on the genset!
You’re a clever man Lee 🙂.
🍺 for Lee
Genaration X fix anything with a coat hanger or number 8 wire well done Brother
But also have to say good job on the diag for the extra oil in the pan that was my guess when you first said how much oil was in the engine. And you lucked out big time on that gen !!
Luck? I think more Sherlock Holmes than luck!
Well done Lee🎉
Is there anything this man cannot do? ... Stay Safe & Fair Winds!! ☘
Brilliant
You are absolutely superieure!
Recycling at its best 😃🤣😂🍻
What a score on that generator, well dune.
Lees' a Legend
gotta love it
Great job
You rock 😂
It is amazing at times. A few weeks ago I got a new Ford Bronco. On delivery at the dealer, a technician backed up into the brand-new truck at a low speed. The dealer for some reason changed the oil (less than 100km on the odometer), and guess what: the technician forgot to tighten the oil sump bolt. I was driving the truck for the first time, I had about 120 km on the thing, and it seized on the motorway. Now the truck (with a grand total of 230km) needs a new engine... It's the stupid stuff that kills'ya
👏
Pull that fuel rail and replace them O rings running it when not tight like that could make the O ring out of round or even have small cuts in it ? for the cost and time i would replace them !!
Congrats on the the ginny
👏👏
💖
Shit yeah, Lee the Aussie does it again🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
A diesel fuel leak into the engine crankcase is a very dangerous issue it can cause a runaway and fire. You saver the former owner of that generator his boat. Who ever installed that injector should be held responcible. God bless you all
Folks, You are looking at an Aussie fix all FREAK right there😀!!!!!
Can you add episode numbers to help me follow in order. Plus you arebrilliant family.
Curious which model VTE generator this is?
Lee should have a BIG " S " on the front of his shirt . I don't think there is anything he can't figure out and fix .
Yep he his pretty great ☺️
argh 20 minutes is not enough to satisfy my itch. Peace and Love
🥰☺️
I hope the kids were paying attention? The nearly lost art of diagnosis. To much remove and replace currently.
Hi
So I guess no gen set was why the A/C was not ever run?
Also bearing wear could be an issue running diluted oil but it sounded great!
Comment
dear how long is your hair now!!!!😮
Stick to fixing Yachts Lee.. your dancing is so bad EVEN THE DOG COMPLAINED. 😀
😅🤣
