In oil, the "W" stands for "Winter" using the SAE nomenclature. In this case it has to be lower in viscosity than the standard for SAE15 oil at 0C. Then it has to be higher in viscosity than the SAE45 standard at a high temperature.
you could do with something temporary to catch the grease flying around off the shaft. I used to always change my cars oil when it was hot, a bit painful if you touch anything but just being carful helps (you only grab the exhaust manifold once🤣 ) Great update 2x👍
After I drain my engine oil, I pour a gallon of diesel thru the motor, to rinse it out. I've noticed the fresh oil stays clearer for a longer time. I also use an engine flush and because I want my engine to last, I add Cera Tec. Happy boating.
The main issue with overfilling an engine that you'll run into a lot sooner is the crank sitting in the oil, causing it to foam up the oil, which can then starve the oil pump and bearings of proper lubrication as you're pumping around air along with the oil. Air displaces oil in the galleries and can also cause loss of oil pressure as the pump is suddenly pumping a semi-compressible fluid.
Great progress. I would suggest making plaques that indicate "No Oil-Don't Start" for engine and gen set that you can put on bridge and in the engine room. If you get called away and forget, it can get expensive. I also put date and hours on filters so you have a backup reminder.
Great to hear your boat is performing so well. When filling your generator oil there is a fitting that mounts onto an oil jug that has an integrated hose allowing you to pour without spilling. When I was driving trucks around Australia the service intervals went from 15,000kms to 20,000kms. The one thing I noticed with the longer service intervals was after I had passed 15,000kms I would end up putting 5 litres plus in the engine. The truck engines wouldn’t use a drop of oil until they had passed the 15,000kms mark. Do you mix your used oil in with the diesel and run it through the engine?
For us we could mix the old oil in with fuel but for the 7L of fuel we gain we open ourselves up to a bunch of risk if we haven’t filtered the oil enough and then our 100k drive train is put on the line. Not sure what our service interval of 250hrs equals in kms but it would be pretty close to driving at 100km for 250hrs I would think.
Not only will the oil on the gasket of the filter help with screwing it on, but it will make it possible to remove without demolishing the filter in pieces.
Hey Damo. on all our gensets at work we typically have a fitting with a jic cap at the end off the oil drain hose for the very unlikely case off your oil drain valve vibrating loose

I hope it is not a sore subject, but I sure wish you still had your dog that was so special. I know that it was wonderful dog and is impossible to replace. Nonetheless, it would be great to see such a canine interacting with you. All the best to you, cheers!
The other problem you can get with overfull engine oil is the crankshaft can actually hit the oil collected in the sump. That can areate the oil which greatly reduces its lubricity, and it robs power. Its not so much hydraulic lock as itll just blow out crankcase fill plugs and seals.
You need a red hang tag that says DO NOT TURN ON- UNDER REPAIR. so you can hang it on the start panel / key when your draining the oil or otherwise working on engines.
I use aluminum foil under my oil filters to direct the oil into my containers. Inexpensive and quick/easy to make and saves me clean up and worrying where exactly the container needs to go.

When you adjust that throttle cable ball end you should first see how many threads you have left in the ball end. Completely remove the ball end and measure the length of the thread on the cable then make your adjustment knowing how much thread you have engaged.
You really should be thinking of adding a chain or rope or something to the wheel house gap, in any rough weather or a miserable step you are risking being thrown out the wheelhouse.
Thanks, It will be a ton of work as every join needs to welded double continuous (both sides no gaps) and needs to be built in two half's due to the material size constraints
Just a thought, but to deal with the issue of the genset oil filter dumping oil, have you considered a oil filter relocation kit? You could move the oil filter to the same bracket as the fuel filters.
Is there a way to buy or make an oil filter adapter so the oil filter is vertical instead of horizontal so the oil doesn't spill down like it does now? I always use new oil to lubricate the new filter instead of old oil.

Something i learned from Marty T (Kiwi YTer) is always clean the threads on new oil filters, he alway gets bits of swarf out of them.

Huh. Did not know that

It was under the threads inside the filter, not the threads themselves IIRC.
But .. don't put your finger in there, it'll cut you. Don't ask me how I know...

We will be doing oil samples for each change on the main engine but not for the wee genset. Ideally it would be nice but it’s $140 each sample
I don’t know how often you change the genset oil but perhaps you do the testing every 3rd or 4th oil change? Better than never doing it at all.
DIY funnel- a milk bottle or a juice bottle, usually you can find a container with an opening that will fit an oil filler.
