Listening to very intelligent people… regardless of their politics-makes me sad. Cos it seems their knowledge and ideas exist in the context of intellectual anarchy.
Can you please elaborate? What do you mean by Intellectual Anarchy? That seems to me to be a desirable state of affairs so I assume I’m misinterpreting your intended meaning of the concept.
@3brenm Yes. Anarchy implies ‘no heirarchy’. And while everyone gets a chance to broadcast opinions (that delight the reptilian brain), the ideas and conclusions of those who have devoted decades of critical study to topics get lost in the melee. Podcasters are personable and can be informative - but no substitute for the likes of Yanis Varoufakis (on what’s left of the left), Niall Ferguson on the right, Jeffrey, Sachs, John Mearsheimer, etc. These are scholars whose opinions vary widely - but they are grounded in years of consideration. And the same thing is happening in the arts. Anyway, anarchy is fertile ground for extremists on both sides. And I fear it will end badly. Thanks for reflecting on my comment.

Yanis I have heard from the many other talks he has given. My real joy in this episode was the lady who interviewed him. I immediately fell in love with the way she led through the discussion and it revived my deep respect for Thoughtful Britain. And believe may me when I say, as someone not from the Island, that I immensely despise the role of the British Empire in the past in the world. There are few fire herds in the world which is not connected in one way or the other with the doings of the British Empire.
Grow up. If it wasn't the British Empire it would have been Spain, France, Netherlands, India, China, Russia or any other country which had been in a similar position. Britain established something unique to all of them: The Rule of Law. Think about it.
Agreed, Mearsheimer is an odd one, but I understand him more because of his interpretations of Jeffrey Sachs' views. He's in his heart fully behind Sachs, but in his head he fundamentally knows the world is f'd. I think he thinks that because he's not a revolutionary.
(GPT translated) I am not Varoufakis, and I’m simply sharing my own thoughts on Mearsheimer. Offensive realism is essentially a Western-centric, mirror-image fantasy, projecting the self onto external entities at the state level and using it as the foundation for analysis. Mearsheimer’s theory stems from Hans Morgenthau and E.H. Carr’s classical realism, which traces back to Machiavelli, Hobbes, and ancient Athens-all rooted in Western history and philosophy. In The Tragedy of Great Power Politics, nearly all the historical examples Mearsheimer cites come from the Christian world, showing that realism is far less universal than it appears. I’m not saying that Western centrism directly causes fatal flaws in Mearsheimer’s theory or that China is an absolute exception. However, I do believe that Mearsheimer’s Western- or America-centric mindset overestimates the universality of his theory and, intentionally or not, ignores many facts that don’t align with it. This creates potential mismatches when applying the theory to contemporary international relations and U.S.-China issues, including but not limited to: - The world is not as "anarchic" as Mearsheimer suggests. International organizations like the UN may not be perfect, but at the very least, they provide a platform for engagement and have a degree of influence on international relations. - Most of his historical examples occurred prior to globalization. The impact of globalization is largely unaddressed in his analysis, making his framework less relevant to today’s interconnected world. - The concept of "power" is poorly defined. Mearsheimer doesn’t account for how the pursuit of power is deeply intertwined with a country’s political culture and historical experience. Assuming that all nations pursue power in the same way reflects a mindset that likely originates from a country with little historical depth. - His attitude toward technological advancements is dismissive. Mearsheimer essentially admits, “I know this is outdated, but let’s pretend we’re still living in the 20th century.” Even ignoring advancements like AI, drones, and cyberwarfare, his framework fails to seriously discuss critical developments like intercontinental missiles and nuclear deterrence. Technology matters. Comparing an anarchic neighborhood where everyone is unarmed to one where everyone carries weapons reveals stark differences in power dynamics. - Geopolitical conditions for China are fundamentally different. U.S. hegemony emerged from geographic advantages during two world wars and the power vacuum that followed. I see no signs that China will have similar opportunities to achieve hegemonic expansion. - Few states act as wholly rational entities in practice. Do you believe the Soviet Union’s expansion had no ideological motivations at all? I don’t consider myself a leftist, but I have a basic understanding of leftist perspectives. If you, like Varoufakis, are a leftist, you could identify additional issues from that: - Realism ignores class struggle. - It overemphasizes state sovereignty and nationalism while ignoring the role of capital and international capitalism (e.g., the influence of the Jewish lobby or the military-industrial complex). Mearsheimer believes analyzing U.S.-China relations requires no understanding of China, just abstract international relations. Even so, he’s considered a realist because many U.S. policymakers see no need for even that understanding. This irony drives his theory toward a tragedy of self-fulfilling prophecy. In a lecture in China, Mearsheimer said he didn’t blame China for adopting an expansionist strategy because he would do the same in China's position. To me, this mindset seems simple. I’m bullying you, and before you fight back, I say, "I won’t mind if you fight back," so I can continue bullying you guilt-free until you actually do. You might all me cynical, but that’s the impression Mearsheimer gives me.
The clearest analysis of the decline of the Democrats was in Thomas Frank's incisive and biting book " Listen Liberal. " Brilliant piece of first draft history

On the question of the debt, if the debt is not owed in your own currency, over time it becomes unpayable as it becomes cumulative and compounded. At a certain point the debtor must declare bankruptcy, annul the debts and start over. According to historian Michael Hudson ancient societies recognized this characteristic of the debt and regularly had debt jubilees every 75 years or so to keep the debts from forcing the farmers into abandoning their land and going into debt servitude. To allow that to happen would bring famine.

I am Chilean, my wife is Argentinian, and we live in chile. I have been traveling to visit my in-laws every year for the past 16 years (except for the insanity years of the pandemic), and the last two I have stayed there for more than two continuous months. And I can say with absolute certainty that the portion where he referred to the landowners of Argentina leaving their gains from the export soybeans abroad its profoundly ignorant. Let me give you a couple of examples of the reality in 2023 before the election of Milei. That sector paid a tax that is a mixture of a royalty, and an exportation right called "retenciones" that was above 33% of the international export price. That would leave most of the earning power in the hands of the state. But of course, any that remains in the hands of the private sector is taxed then as in any other company in the form taxes on earnings. But that is not all, when they want to convert their dollars into Argentinian pesos to pay earning taxes, buy raw material or use their earnings they were forced to do it at the official exchange rate that was around half the market level so in reality their earning power was limited to what they could get on around 67% of 50% of the international export price of the soybean. And in that scenario any reasonable observer would conclude that landowners leaving their gains abroad its hardly in the top 10 of the issues that Argentina needs to resolve.
Why wouldn't they just convert it in an overseas account or something? Especially if they're wealthy enough to afford a lawyer? I think I trust someone with Varoufakis' expertise more than just a random commenter on TH-cam who seems to be capping for Milei at least surely we must admit that Milei is continuing to destroy Argentina through the extreme privatization (of course there were already severe problems, which was what gave him the opportunity to seize power in the first place).
@@scythermantis Where in the world would you suggest they convert dollars into Argentinian pesos? And how would they get those pesos into the local banking system? That is what a closed balance of payments does, it blocks entry into the local banking system unless you follow their rules or try to bring bags of cash through the frontier. My comment attempted to provide factual data about the reality faced by the agricultural sector, and please correct me if I am wrong about anything. But if you are able to confirm those datapoints you can at least use your own capacity for critical thinking to assess that particular comment by Yanis. Currently the economy of Argentina is in pretty bad shape that is inarguably, and I agree with Yannis that that is the immediate result of sharply reducing government spending and indirectly private consumption. So, you are relying on Investments and net exports to recover it, and I would agree that being sceptical about that is reasonable. At the same time, Argentina has been for decades following the exact same recipe of an extreme version of Keynesian economics in a deeply and brazenly corrupted government, and when I say corruption, I am talking about things that you would have never seen in any developed country nor in many developing ones. And the result of that recipe has been 100 years of decadence from a world power at the beginning of the past century to poverty, crime and educational statistics comparable to sub-Saharan Africa, not even mentioning inflation that ended 2023 at 211%. And Inflation this year has been falling for 9 almost consecutive months (2.7% being the last monthly reading) What would be the final result of Milei for the Argentinian economy I do not know, but I at least would keep an open mind as the results of the other alternative are already well known.
The point Is, that thé profits Are not reinvested in thé country, where the production happened, but thé corporates/oligarchs transfer them abroad. It does not matter WHO thé oligarchs Are, Argentinians or foreigners, they do IT anyway. Thé country And Its citizens have almost nothing from that except of miserable salaries. If ať least thé government works on behalf of thé country And Its people At least IT tries to execute thé taxation And collection of thé tax with responsibility, So public systems And Social welfare systems can be paid from that... I do not know if this Is or was thé case of Argentina but if i understood you correctly about thé retenciones, IT seems that it really was in place. But that was before Milei, no?
I think Yanis is wrong about Elon. It’s a dangerous combination to let Elon have all this power. This kind of “public private partnership” is to me the sign of dystopian times ahead, the techno dictatorship.

They have no response to this assessment, as long as you speak in terms of assessment and you have your arguments at the tips of your fingers. They are protagonists of a Corporate State. These were first used by anarcho-syndycalists. The idea was perverted by the corporates and now works for them as means of subjugation and homogenisation.
Most of the horrors about the Soviet Union and stalinism period in particular are exaggerated so terribly that you just can't imagine. And there was no intended starvation of any region. Errors? Yes. Atrocity? No! The myths of 80s are still alive but they are being debunked little by little. And the horror and scale of the lies evokes much more emotion than the real so-called crimes of the Soviet government. Those who destroyed the USSR literally danced on the bones of people, trying to denigrate the very idea of social justice. So it's strongly recommended to read some modern articles about that period before giving any emotional response.

@3brenm Can you imagine how poor a country is after the USD is being manipulated since 1960?
For example, Indonesia - not my country.
In 1969, 1 USD = Rp 7.5. Today, 1 USD = Rp 16,000. Indonesia GDP currently is USD 5,247/year per person. This mean in local currency, it is USD 5,247x Rp 16,000 = Rp 84 million/year/head. Now, if the USD is not being manipulated and 1 USD = Rp 7.5, Rp 84 million should be Rp 84 million/Rp 7.5 = USD 1.03 million/year
Can you see now? Rp 84 million GDP only worths USD 5,247 rather than USD 1.03 million.

All currencies are manipulated, I don't see the point of this post. The Indonesians deliberately devalued their currency through a combination of poor monetary policy and growing an export market.

Indonesia deliberately devalued their currencies? LOL, you need to read lots of bloombergs. Devaluation of other countries currencies is part of making the USD is the only currency on earth.
Besides, Freeport etc has sent 100% of its sales on USD to the USA without anything left to Indonesia. Plus, Indonesia currency was managed by Singapore via SIBOR. How could this happen? Simple question, what was the reason the USA gave 9% shares to Suharto and 1% to Indonesia government in 1969?

Yanis I have heard from the many other talks he has given. My real joy in this episode was the lady who interviewed him. I immediately fell in love with the way she led through the discussion and it revived my deep respect for Thoughtful Britain. And believe may me when I say, as someone not from the Island, that I immensely despise the role of the British Empire in the past in the world. There are few fire herds in the world which is not connected in one way or the other with the doings of the British Empire.
Her first name is Florence
Grow up. If it wasn't the British Empire it would have been Spain, France, Netherlands, India, China, Russia or any other country which had been in a similar position. Britain established something unique to all of them: The Rule of Law. Think about it.
Fun discussion. I would have liked to know what Varoufakis thought of foreign policy realism, especially when he teased a critique of Mearsheimer.
This creates potential mismatches when applying the theory to contemporary international relations and U.S.-China issues, including but not limited to:
- The world is not as "anarchic" as Mearsheimer suggests.
If you, like Varoufakis, are a leftist, you could identify additional issues from that:
- Realism ignores class struggle.

I think I trust someone with Varoufakis' expertise more than just a random commenter on TH-cam who seems to be capping for Milei
at least surely we must admit that Milei is continuing to destroy Argentina through the extreme privatization (of course there were already severe problems, which was what gave him the opportunity to seize power in the first place).
And Inflation this year has been falling for 9 almost consecutive months (2.7% being the last monthly reading)
What would be the final result of Milei for the Argentinian economy I do not know, but I at least would keep an open mind as the results of the other alternative are already well known.

I guess, I might have an observation to add here. Look how they used natural human tendencies to cluster in groups of, before advances of communication technologies 20-50, now 20-150 people.

The congruence of biblical prophecy, cosmology, history and current affairs is irrefutable. *As earth continues it's plunge into the galactic current sheet of the Milky Way,* priorities are sure to change :-)
Communism doesn't work, anarcho-capitalism does.

Not sure this interview will age very well, especially the bit on Trump's take on Israel.
Earlier today Pete Hegseth was announced as the forthcoming US defence secretary. Not looking good.
Exactly i don't think even Ukraine war will stop
Business as usual in Washington
None of it will age well. Only the part of Technofeudalism but that's already happening so...
Edit: And the part with Germany missing the E-Vehicle Revolution.
Can you imagine how poor a country is after the USD is being manipulated since 1960?
I've always liked Janis and think he has an important voice with many good perspectives. I'm sorry though Greta is a horror show. I unquestioningly believed the climate nonsense for decades until I actually reinterrogated and dared to separate from the real environmental issues. What is the right climate? It's almost a joke to say it's 1900 or whatever arbitrary selection in an entire planetary history of wildly varying climate. It's a corporate and technocratic coup to control individuals not hold the polluting companies to account. The Rockefellers were behind the whole thing with their creature Maurice Strong the oil baron. It's laughable now if it wasn't so scary how we were fooled and our good intentions preyed upon.
That’s why people must immigrate the bubble of mainstream media and start to think and come here such insightful information !!! … yeah Yannis to me is a big criminal and one of those increased Greece problems at least by silence but he is knowing what he is talking about
Best way to describe this guy is, The woman in the red dress.
"Left-Rigjt" doesn't apply to USA.
This guy refers to "Democrats" without distinguishing Democrat Voters from Party Apparachicks
Marx's father was a Jewish rabbi. His writings need to be understood in view of the psychosis of their self-destructive Talmudic-Zionist metaphysics. There is merit in some of his critical arguments against religion though, but he never succeeded to overcome the built-in confrontational, humanity-hating tenets of all his thinking. See Paul Johnson's book Intellectuals.
