Hey Cody! All of my research in neurology and the electricity of our body shows that DC is the native electric current of our neurology. Why do you say it's AC?
This is a great explanation - if is a wonderful skill to be able to make complex stuff simple. So many people want to complicate - and seem to think that that enhances their credentials as an "expert". For me, it's the opposite - knowledge is useful to the extent that we can communicate it, and that means conveying the essence clearly. This is lovely. I shall be referring people to this.
How as a clinician do you verify if Muse is working if InteraXon doesn't disclose what brainwaves they are targeting through their app? It's a leap of faith having to trust a secret, proprietary algorithm. I haven't been able to find any info on it. For example, choosemuse.com/what-it-measures/ doesn't mention specifics.
Hi Doctor, I'd like to use an EEG Device (leaning towards the MUSE) to attach to my 10 year old as a communication device with the :prose software. Have there been any studies on patients with brain damage (Cerebral Palsy) who are non-verbal? When she has been connected to clinical EEG machines, they say it's filled with static and there is not much of a pattern to the waves. Is there a way to squelch the static out of the readings? Thanks for your work and these awesome videos! Keep 'em coming...
You can try the Muse and investigate the software for your own education, but I have my doubts about the clinical utility for your child unfortunately :( . It certainly couldn't hurt to try. Unfortunately if there was static with clinical EEG (complete with conductive paste), the Muse will not do any better. I do not know the extent of your 10 year old's disability, but it sounds like his/her brain activity might not be active enough :(
I have been meditating for several years. I am long past the "chatter" conquering aspect of meditation and can achieve reasonable levels of consistent calm. So if the foremost goal of the Muse device is to help achieve calmness, is there any other benefit to me? I am intrigued with the "feedback" aspect, but where else might one go with this device?
I would agree that Muse is more for beginners that are trying to establish the feeling and habit of meditation. But it may teach you things about your meditation that you did not know before. Also, if you were interested into getting into research aspects of it, they are coming out with great tools like Muse Connect and Muse Direct
Great video! Could you please provide some references (paper, book) where the difference between the fast oscillations (simple task) and slow oscillations (complicated tasks) are explained in more detail? Thanks, K
Yep! I most recently read that information from "biofeedback, a practitioner's guide". But I have heard Gyorgy Buzsaki talk quite a bit about these concepts in his TH-cam talks and in his book "rhythms of the brain". Thanks cody... you give me a new knowledge, it's interesting to know how our brain works, i really need your advise about what device i should buy. my option is muse or emotiv insight, i saw muse only put sensor on " Front " , in the other side emotiv insight put 5 sensor on different location. i dont know what the different result. My question : What device i should buy ? muse or emotiv insight ? What i love about muse is when we put on calm , we heard bird chapping. i dont know what sign that emotiv give when at calm state. Sorry my english bad, but i really love your passion on neurology Thanks cody
Great video but I am still confused... so I was thinking of buying a muse so I can kinda measure if my meditation practice is working and so that data isn't available with the muse app, you either have to download the developer kit or use a 3rd party app like muse monitor which is both fine options for me but I am confused on how to read the charts. 1. All throughout our day our brains are "in" every brainwave state (beta, alpha, delta, theta, gamma)? I ask because I wanted to measure if during meditation if I was able to reach deep alpha or even theta and to use that data to improve my meditation but the charts seem to show all 5 brainwave patterns so how do you read that to make sense of it, I guess is my question. (www.guidingtech.com/assets/postimages/2016/05/musemonitor.png ) 2. Also, I would probably measure brainwave patterns when reading, doing yoga, working on a project for work, sewing, just to play around with some other activities so if the brain is in some form of all 5 patterns during every epoch (15 minutes of meditation or 15 minutes of reading or 15 minutes of work) how do I read the chart and how can I compare the charts during different activities? I expected (maybe foolishly) that when meditating my brain would be mostly in alpha if I was able to reach that state or even theta in deep, deep meditation and that when awake I would be in beta or high beta or low beta when washing dishes... I guess I was expecting clearer distinctions and going from one level to the other like alpha would have peaks and valleys and the other 4 would be kinda flat, if you know what I mean.... if anyone has come across a tutorial on how to read those charts like the one here: lh3.googleusercontent.com/gp8yMZNkubusbpEKPfAO7u9j5bS7_cVNXXUyg21km9uzBf8RUY7oq3RF1Y5s57IoHUuC=h900 that would be great... like what is dB and what does those numbers mean, etc.... that would be so fantastic! Thanks!
Yes it is complicated system. Unfortunately there is no one consensus on what brain wave patterns represent the best meditation. However you can get the raw EEG data and start comparing sessions. I will have videos coming on this soon, thanks for the comment

what do you think about the neurosky haves more Correlation whit a normal EEG???
Not really a fan of neurosky these days
great stuff Cody and Olaf. Love your work are thank you for doing the do on this, really appreciated
Thank you!

Thanks so much for these. It’s wonderful to have videos by someone who is actually smart and educated. There is mis-information out there too LOL
Much appreciated!

well...can you record raw data to lets say hard drive storage?
Yep. You can export Muse lab files to a hard drive.
Where do i get one?
Hi! I am wondering that do you still have Emotiv Epoc+? Also, would you like to sell it?
It's very bad, I heard
Nice new intro
Thanks, much appreciated :)
