Just discovered this composer. What a delight. He certainly deserves to be more well known.

Excellent performance and wonderful music. Potter was a great composer and music educator.

Splendida scoperta. Un piglio decisamente romantico, con sfumature "schumanniane".

I believe the conductor is Hilary Davan Wetton. I'll try to turn up more information later.

Wonderful ! I think it is a world premiere recording : The British Symphonic Collection, Vol. 14 - Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, Douglas Bostock, conductor, 2005. Label: Classico.

Yes, Hilary Davan Wetton with the Milton Keynes City Orchestra.

Thank you for finding yet another great composer! He reminds me slightly of Niels Gade in style.

How the F* have I never heard (nor heard of) this composer? This is so great!

We need a complete Potter cycle!! The last time I heard this it was numbered 10. Clearly more research has been done since then. If its Davan Wetton conducting then I think its the Milton Keynes Symphony Orchestra.

I really think it's time for a first rate ensemble to do a traversal of all of Potter's extant symphonies.

If this is the G minor Symphony I think it is, the movements are:
    I. Allegro con fuoco
    II. Andante con moto
    III. Scherzo: Vivace
    IV. Finale: Allegro assai

I especially love the last movement. So sunny and upbeat! Themes like I have never heard in a symphony before.

Brian Knapp you can find some of those themes in his G major string quartet.

I've just noticed iTunes has called it a "Partial Album" with tracks 1 and 5 missing! How mad! What's the point of that?

Great! Another welcome dent in the perceived near-total domination of German, Austrian and Bohemian composers of the period.

I only want to get the 1st Movement (I have the 2nd from a compilation CD) but I'm not going to pay $23+ (with postage) for the whole CD for one track.

iTunes is SO SLACK -- they only have 2 of Potter's symphonies (on one disc) and NOT every movement of either!
So the 1st movement of this work is missing! (Yes, I've tried the other "No."s for this work.)
It's actually the same conductor and orchestra too! How IGNORANT of iTunes not to include the full work!

    What CD is this from?

I will be exceedingly grateful if someone could point me to a score of his Bravura Variations on a theme by Rossini.

Interesting! Its like Mozart lived much longer, went senile and sustained several hard blows to the head.

Интерпретация слегка дубоватая, я думаю в руках другого дирижёра симфония могла бы зазвучать выразительнее и составить более целостное впечатление.

This Potter Symphony was identified as his No.10 when Unicorn released it. This is definitely the same recording.

    • @carlosantuckwell
      @carlosantuckwell 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, the Wikipedia article confirms this, saying that this is the 6th symphony he wrote, but that Potter himself labelled it "No. 10" and sometimes even "No. 2" ! (Maybe he had that superstition about avoiding a 9th symphony.)
