SLS is a shadow of what it used to be. It wasn't perfect before, but it was diverse and exciting. The current format sucks, and is a real step back from previous formats. I've found the finals at the these last two stops to be much less interesting than finals in the past. At this rate, it won't be long before they eliminate the run section entirely, and even using an entire skatepark for the competition, in favor of just having a best trick contest down a set of stairs with one hubba and one rail.
For real, I miss when they would have different sections. It was so much more interesting when they had a tech section, a line section, and a big section all as separate parts of the park. Gave chances for all types of skaters to shine, you got to see more than just the same 15 tricks, and forced the skaters to be more well rounded rather than relying on handrails alone.

Those switch bombs down the set by P-Rod used to score around 9.0. And he's still the only one making switch look regular, which should count a little more. Jagger & Mickey got screwed as well. There should be a trick points guide, adding or subtracting a set amount depending on location, height, length, landing, and how clean it was. It seems there's just a lot of guessing and bias, unconscious or not.
problem with Shane is he makes it look too easy. If he just threw a deliberate lil bit of sketch or a head throw to stomp the landing he'd get higher points. honestly idk if skating is meant for this season like format. Its kind of sad being desensitized to some of these skater signature tricks after seeing them over and over on every leg of the tour every year. Its not like the skaters aren't throwing down either, you just pick up the tendencies and the go-to tricks way too easily after watching for a while. Some of the judging makes sense in that regard it becomes less impressive the more you see of some of these tricks.

The nyjah and micky doing the same trick but on different obstacles… the scoring there is actually about right. It could be argued that the trick should be higher in general, but the hubba is actually higher and a farther gap than the lowest rail of any main stair set sls park. You can see the difference from a side angle
I think Nyah’s switch heel 5-0 down the hubba got a 6.7 because he didn’t grind. His tricks were over the edge of the hubba and he was tail scraping down it.

They gave the same points for that than for doing a switch flip over the blocks WTF!! The same goes for the same trick as nyjah, or the nollie heel fs board, if not 9 club it has to be like 8.9 is a trick hard as fuck. I think it could be harder than nollie inward fs board, since the inward helps you pass half of the board for the trick, but imposible to know with my level.
Loved your analysis! Nyjah deserves the good scores...but the other skaters deserve fair scoring too. Hopefully, they will bring back 2 runs and fair scoring. I think the judges should be able to pull that off (Marks, Capaldi etc... come on you can do better)
The later heats getting more points was my main issue tbh, it was exactly the same at the super crown. And people here singling out nyjah while the entire comp is judged pretty irregular. Also lets face it, it's hard to judge skateboarding because there are so many possibilities and combinaties.
I subscribed, this is exactly the kind of nerd data about skateboarding i needed. I'm always thinking this to myself and trying to predict scores and such, and this is just huge fun to watch.
thank you for your hard work sir! i agree with you on a lotttttt of the scoring, couple of differences in opinion on scoring but overall shane and micky got pretty screwed and as usual overscore nyjah as if he needs it. oh and ryan decenzo also got screwed. they really need some different judges. thats sad seeing nyjah steal other peoples tricks and basically get higher scores....when they look very similar. that half cab bs smith 180 out is such an old trick, ryan sheckler used to do it a lot. fs 360s are harder. flipping out/shuving out is harder and should be scored so compared to flipping in.
Really enjoyed the video but I feel like you maybe missed a couple of things. 1) trick selection: I feel a skater who is known for certain tricks score less on them e.g ribiero does a lot of crook nollie flip out. Joslin big sends. Judges don’t favour this safety approach as much 2) crowd noise and reaction: I always feel some skaters get mugged with the score sometimes and more time or not I believe how the crowd react is a good indicator so even if something doesn’t look so good a more known skater such as nyjah benefits Remember sls is a business and these guys are the face off it. Makes me sad that you said Dilo doesn’t know how to contest when he’s actually trying to win his way but it’s so clear to see his version of fun and gnarly is not sls vision
I've been watching SLS since day one, and I saw this shi t from the beginning. I called it then, and I appreciate your work now. It would be a tone of work, but imagine the dumb data from every season [collectively] ... things would get really ugly.
I feel like the judges maybe gave Shane a weird score as they're so used to seeing him do switch 360 double flips and tre flip nosegrind on a downrail so perhaps didn't get too stoked on his score. They also know he skates better switch - some skaters are just better at skating switch for some reason. But you are totally right, the fact the judges still didn't take those tricks into account was odd
Was the rainbow color scheme a nod to the x gayms? And you should ALWAYS EXPECT internet skaters to call you on even the most minute of mislabeled tricks. Great vid.😘😉😁
Thank your for this. The SLS judging has always been flawed, but this contest made me ready to get my tinfoil hat on. These judges need to be switched out...
I think whoever is in change of SLS needs to force the judges to watch this before every contest. also, Finally, someone who knows how to say Carlos' last name properly!
It's pretty obvious how Nyjah has judge's favoritism on his side in most competitions. It's the so called "Halo effect" that comes from his fame and poster boy personality.
Excellent video sir! I could not believe the scores I was seeing and I'm glad others feel the same. At the end of the day it's all sick I do understand that but come on where's the consistency when it comes to scoring. Maybe if they were more transparent and actually explained why they scored how they did we could start to develop an understanding. At the moment it just seems that if you have a huge insta following and you f with high fashion people that you will get extra points lol
Fwiw, I think Nyjah got the bad score on his last trick because, on my phone at least, it appears he didn’t actually get into 5-0. Micky Papa missed the final by 0.2. He always gets underscored and this was no different. He absolutely should not have missed the finals. I feel Jagger gets underscored too. Nobody uses the complete course like he does, and the stuff he does down the rails is as good as anyone.
It's Billy Marks. he's pissed at everyone for beating him back in the day. He scores everything against his old scores so he will look better in history.
Seeing how much people are talking about Shane getting absolutely robbed and other inconsistent scoring at Lake Havasu I hope that SLS will change something up. It doesn't seem fair at all.
You really need to look at how smooth, fast, and clean these tricks are performed, a lot of times the scores reflect this. Look at toe drag, clean landing etc.
SLS has made it to clear that their judging isnt fair at all. Its a nyjah show. So many other deserving skaters got shit canned. I believe im done with SLS. Its became a joke and its sad. Judges either have a hard on for nyjah or nyjah pays them well. Wont be watching the next event or any other SLS event for that matter. Get it together before you lose all your fans
SLS judging I'd biased like every other sport. The refs call what they want when they inconsistently. It seems like if your more popular or likeable guy the better the score. Shane n P-Rod killed it just to get dogged. DeShawn, Filepe n Foy were more impressive than 9jah imo. Papa killed it to.. idk it all seemed wrong to me personally
@@Lolp821 yeah tell that to the athletes and I understand it's entertainment like football or mma yet nobody enjoys a game w bad calls from the refs or judges. Its all entertainment, with a touch of biased and playing favorites no doubt. Idc what sport it is, or what activity there's always going to be some level of bias. It's human nature to like someone or something more than others, ni matter what it is nobodies morals and likes & dislikes will be the same. But when there's a wrong call or foul or bad judging in a fight or event, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. If someone's doing clearly harder tricks the nobody else can or is doing the score should reflect it period. I don't watch SLS & other events because I find it boring or dumb, it's obviously only entertainment. So does the Superbowl or Stanley Cup or Super Crown not matter if it's judged properly because in the end it's only entertainment? Like idk wtf ur even talking about right now. If it's only just for entertainment why even score it then? When ur hear Geoff Rowley saying what's up judges, u gonna go tell him & the people competing that it's only entertainment who cares? All the money sls & other sports rake in I don't think it's to much to ask for some consistent & fair judging honestly
After Decenzo blasted off that clean AF 360 from top to flat and got a 7.7 he's passing the cam sayin' "that wasnt' even worth going off that thing". it kinda lets you understand the skaters point of view and frustration with how the judging works no?
I agree that many of the scores where off. But I would love to have a discussion with you because there are a lot of things I have a different opinion about 😅

1) Difficulty of halfcab bs 5-0 ≠ halfcab BS smith
2) It was a sugarcane not a hurricane

It’s Rigged all the time we know who is gonna win
I could feel the judging was bad, but now I have the numbers and visuals to prove the judging was bad.
I’m unsure I can unsee this…haha
Great breakdown! The judges should all have to watch this after each comp
Finally someone speaks out!!!👍🔥🔥🔥 I hope sls sees this!
Great breakdown, subbed and liked, way underrated channel.
TY!!
you're a legend for analyzing this
The later heats getting more points was my main issue tbh, it was exactly the same at the super crown.
And people here singling out nyjah while the entire comp is judged pretty irregular.
Also lets face it, it's hard to judge skateboarding because there are so many possibilities and combinaties.
Best quote from this: “the judges didn’t f*ck with it.” We need relevant judges.
Nyjahs sw heel 5-0 didnt grind. it was sw heel scrape, even deserves lower then what he got if they penalize Carlos for not locking into nollie bennet
I subscribed, this is exactly the kind of nerd data about skateboarding i needed. I'm always thinking this to myself and trying to predict scores and such, and this is just huge fun to watch.
Preshade it!!
Yuto may be stuck in Japan due to covid restrictions. I hope he is ok. Anyone in touch with Yuto, what is he doing?
thank you for your hard work sir! i agree with you on a lotttttt of the scoring, couple of differences in opinion on scoring but overall shane and micky got pretty screwed and as usual overscore nyjah as if he needs it. oh and ryan decenzo also got screwed. they really need some different judges. thats sad seeing nyjah steal other peoples tricks and basically get higher scores....when they look very similar. that half cab bs smith 180 out is such an old trick, ryan sheckler used to do it a lot. fs 360s are harder. flipping out/shuving out is harder and should be scored so compared to flipping in.
Really enjoyed the video but I feel like you maybe missed a couple of things.
1) trick selection: I feel a skater who is known for certain tricks score less on them e.g ribiero does a lot of crook nollie flip out. Joslin big sends. Judges don’t favour this safety approach as much
2) crowd noise and reaction: I always feel some skaters get mugged with the score sometimes and more time or not I believe how the crowd react is a good indicator so even if something doesn’t look so good a more known skater such as nyjah benefits
Remember sls is a business and these guys are the face off it.
Some people say he’s a douchebag, which is strange because I hung out with him once and he was totally cool and chill.
I wanted to hate this cuz I thought it was gonna just be all hating.. but this was actually pretty good and entertaining 👌
I think whoever is in change of SLS needs to force the judges to watch this before every contest.
also, Finally, someone who knows how to say Carlos' last name properly!
13:42 - Dashawn misses the rear trucks on the railing.
22:32 - Nyjah misses the rear trucks on the railing.
Therefore, they gave less points.
It's pretty obvious how Nyjah has judge's favoritism on his side in most competitions. It's the so called "Halo effect" that comes from his fame and poster boy personality.
Can’t wait to see your input on this latest SLC judges are trash!
This is good... Thanks for this breakdown. I find myself yelling at the screen quite a bit when these judges fuck up the scoring
Damn can you do this for all upcoming SLS events and previous ones too??? Thx
Thank you for this. Its like everything I'm screaming at the TV during SLS.
Great work you described and brought to light everything we are saying. Wish SLS would listen
You really need to look at how smooth, fast, and clean these tricks are performed, a lot of times the scores reflect this. Look at toe drag, clean landing etc.
22:23 his switch heel 5-0 only got 6.7 because he didn't really lock in properly
Make this go viral boys!
It's just entertainment
All the money sls & other sports rake in I don't think it's to much to ask for some consistent & fair judging honestly
cant really argue with this logic.
Yeah I knew Shane got fucked but seeing the numbers and tricks made it so clear
keeping the judges and scores accountable, somebody had to do this no lie. Very interesting to watch, thanks for the upload.
Appreciate the support!
thank you for putting numbers to what everyone's been saying
This is my new fav TH-cam channel
Thank you!!
After Decenzo blasted off that clean AF 360 from top to flat and got a 7.7 he's passing the cam sayin' "that wasnt' even worth going off that thing". it kinda lets you understand the skaters point of view and frustration with how the judging works no?
thaks for this, the judging is getting worse every damn stop
I agree that many of the scores where off. But I would love to have a discussion with you because there are a lot of things I have a different opinion about 😅
You can hear Decenzo say out loud after getting his frontside 360 score that it’s not worth it to go off anything huge
