High efficiency portable solar panel with Shade Stopper Technology. 100W better than 120W?

  • I'm testing the Shade Stopper high efficiency portable and folding 100W solar panel. They use some sort of half-cut solar cells in combination with bypass diodes to achieve a better power output in shading conditions. I could not quite verify that when in the shadow of a tree but the overall power output when compared to an ordinary 120W portable panel is a lot higher. We are having an 85-90% power output of this 100W panel which is much higher than I have seen with other portable panels.

    When I first discovered the Off-Grid Garage, I dreamt of building my own home battery. Now that it's finished, I still like to watch Andy's videos, but now I'm fantasizing about emigrating to Australia. Greetings from 'over 10 months of rain' Belgium.

    Feel like the "Shade Stopper" is the right name for this.
    It stops charging.... When it is shaded... SHADE "OH NO" STOPP-ER! 😆
    I did a review of the BigBlue Portable Solar (almost 3 years ago) that did really good as well. I was happy at the time, about 85%+ in 30c weather here in the USA.

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia Yes, cheers Andy, we’ve been in central Western NSW for a couple of months- cold nights but mostly beautiful days when it’s not overcast. Connectivity has been pretty terrible- might have to seriously consider Starlink before our next trip. Even when there is good phone signal strength, Telstra data speeds have been absolutely awful, sometimes can’t even open an email.
      We have lightweight folding panels (2 x 300w) and they do a huge amount of the “work”. Because you can point them directly at the sun, AND can follow the sun, they provide a huge percentage of our power, which is totally disproportionate to the 1kW of roof top panels. They are very often in shade from trees and are never perpendicular to the sun, (especially of course in Winter).
      We never connect to mains power, and don’t carry a generator. In good solar conditions we are usually doing everything electric- and if it’s overcast we just use some LPG for cooking and diesel for heating instead of inverter power for cooking and reverse cycle A/C, to preserve batteries for fridge and lights etc.

      I actually used one but it's a bit pointless as the legs cannot be adjusted in a way to fully optimize the panel. They can be unfolded or folded, no real height adjustment.

  • @awo1fman
    @awo1fman หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    To summarize, it is in general a really good solar panel if you completely ignore the "shade stopper" function, which absolutely does NOT work.
    Some day they will make panels with "nano-inverters" where each individual cell operates independently and the panel will still be useful if any number of cells are shaded, but until then (and we're talking decades until that kind of tech is economically feasible, even though it is technically possible now) we just have to deal with placing prtable panels carefully and moving them as necessary.

    Foldable panels from these no-name fly by night brands are hit or miss. I do Amazon Vine and have reviewed a number of them. Best so far was a 120w that I got 130W out of. But I've also had some 100W ones only putting out 65W and even some RIGID 100W panels only doing 65-70W.... Big things to look for are NOT PET coated (doesn't hold up well, look for ETFE), careful with handling so you don't damage cells, especially when they're hot and a lot more bendable. Fabric wrapped ones tend to tear up easier since you're dragging them along the ground to get them setup. I think the laminated plasticy ones will hold up better. Anything over 100 be careful about wind as they become sails/kites pretty quickly, have some weights (rocks, sandbags, small children) handy to hold them down.

    Sorry, Andy, but this panel was not better in shaded conditions than the other one. It might have a slightly better efficiency in full sun, but in the shade I saw no difference. The bigger one might even have advantages due to the two parallel panels.

    Keep up the good work Andy, i have a similar foldable panel but mine is 300w.. Could you make a video on power inverters.? How would you connect a DC to AC pure sine wave converter to lifepo4 cells.? 24V - 230V with at least 2500w continu and preferably 8kw peak. I didnt have succes connecting mine, maybe because it was a cheap one from Asia.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia

      Thank you. Wow, a 300W folding panel. That must be quite large...
      Why can't you connect the inverter to your battery? Do you use a resistor when connecting it the first time? Could be that your BMS recognised it as a short.
      I have tested the 'Peter' Inverter a while back, 3000W pure sine wave but 12V.

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia thans for the link, i will check it out. Actually i have 2 foldable panels, one is 400w and the other 300w. Completely unfolded they are about the size of my car. I use them together with a 575wp panel on my EV to charge a Oukitel P5000 and 8 lifepo4 cells, then charge my EV with them.
      I tried connecting inverter before i received the BMS (yesterday). I got E3 and E5 errors when i tried to charge the Oukitel or EV with it, but no errors with smaller equipment. So i think the inverter couldnt handle the required power output and promised 2,5kw continu capacity. Bc the 8 lifepo4 (3,2V 230Ah)cells in serie have a 2C rate and should be able to deliver.

    So this might not be the best place to ask this but,
    Multiplus-II with 5kWh jakiper and 5.2 kWh solar with ESS enabled.
    ESS wont allow me to discharge my 30% to 20% that i wanna use for the night
    so ESS can do whatever it likes at day (not charge from grid tho (Yes, enable charge battery from grid restrictions)
    So ESS can use 70% to backfeed to the grid when price is high but when it gets to 30% i wanna use that last power (10/15%) for the night, so i dont pull power from the grid.
    now i can only use this if i disable ESS after it gets to 30% otherwise i will pull from the grid because ESS says it cant go below 30%. then i need to enable it again in the morning to let ESS do its logic again.
    Hope im clear, english isnt my first langauge. hope someone knows what i need to change.

      @awo1fman หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      1. He's not "advertising" anything, he's reviewing a specific product.
      2. This is the whole reason this channel exists. While he did slightly screw up on the summary for this product in not making it clear that it's very good as a portable solar panel that actually lives up to its stated output (very rare indeed!) but the "shade stopper" aspect is utterly nonexistant, anybody that watches the whole video will understand that.
      All he does on this channel is review products and demonstrate how they are used and connected to each other, which is very useful information for anybody wanting to build a solar energy system for themselves. There are such huge numbers of competing products out there that it's good to know at least a few specific products that either don't work well at all or do work well with caveats. There are none that work well in every situation.
      This product happens to be very much worth considering, just not specifically for partial shade, which happens to be the benefit that is touted. To summarize, it's much more efficient and powerful for its size than most, but it's on par with average in partial shade, not better as is claimed.
