Boldly Going Where No Truck Should Go!!! Because His GPS Told Him So

- Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching!!! Today, we have a another GPS following fail. This one could have been SO much worse, but, thankfully it wasn't . GPS, in my opinion, should be used as a tool, not something to follow blindly. This driver finds himself on a remote county road with loose gravel and a very steep incline. The driver loses traction, slides backwards down the hill, and ends up with the front end stuck in a roadside ditch. Ethan takes our new Western Star with a Miller Industries 9055XL heavy towing and recovery unit along with our traffic control and some helpers. Initially, we were told the truck was blocking an intersection of a busy road. This job may test the skill of young Ethan and the capabilities of the new 9055XL. Let's see what happens. Also, stay tuned all the way to the end for a sneak peak of next week's video!! Thank you, God, for blessing our family and our business. Watch as we continue to receive God's blessings. There is much more to come!!! I hope you enjoy this video!!!

My common analogy, "there are many ways to reach 10". I could have approached this (any) job several different ways. The approach method is important, but more important is achieving the desired result, safely.

It’s getting harder and harder to tell if it’s Ethan talking or Ron talking, you two sound so much alike. Love the videos.
you got that right.
I think Ethan has the lower voice
I know Ethan sounds so munch like his dad.
I can tell who is talking.
I was about to put the same thing!
Tip from someone who started using GPS when nobody had ever heard of it -- you don't use GPS by itself. You use it in conjunction with a map that indicates the type of road, or with satellite/arial imagery.
Personally I don't use GPS. Then again I typically don't travel all over the place like a trucker does. What I do before I go somewhere that I've never been to before is check the route on a map (Google maps for example) to familiarize myself with it. I don't just wing it and hope for the best. If need be I'll even write the directions down on a piece of paper or print them out. When you know the route beforehand it's hard to get lost. If something isn't right park somewhere and re-evaluate.
If I had service I would pull up Google maps with the satellite view and then I could zoom in and generally get a good idea of the road. It would help with any turns and maneuvers.
I used GPS in the semi truck for 10 years but would also check route on phone and have never driven into somewhere I shouldn’t be
Yep. In my many years of truck driving we didn't have GPS as we know it now. However when they did come out I got one. Didn't take me long to realize how wrong they can be sometimes. Quite a few times I've had GPS try to get me down a road like this and that's when the alarm bells went off in my head. I'd go somewhere to contact the customer and get clarification on directions instead of going down a road like this. I believe it was Ronald Reagan that once said "trust, but verify".
Would you follow GPS off a cliff? No common sense anymore!
17:58 “whoop that’s my head, that’s also my head, still my head.” 😂🤣. Good work Ethan!
Should've made the video title that line, I'm still chuckling about that delivery...
Ethan is a good teacher just like his dad
100% agree as a long time viewer I remember learning from his dad now he's become the teacher and very good at that. Quite impressive
Wow I had to restart the video to see if it was Ron or Ethan. They sound so much alike. Ron should really be proud of Ethan he's an amazing operator for being so young. God bless the Pratt family.
Totally agree
It took me a couple seconds. After about the third sentence i could tell it was Ethan.
Every dad's dream. Seeing their son follow in their footsteps. Great job as usual Ethan
Great job. You are learning a lot from your dad, respect for the customer, safety, explaining things to the newbies, and calm attitude. Great job.
From the driver's seat was the best way to show how steep that driveway was Wow!
Hope you are all safe from the after math of hurricane Francine. Prayers to the folks in Louisiana. Here in Mississippi coast just patches of flooding.
Wow took me a bit before I realized it was Ethan talking not Ron. You both sound so much alike. Ethan you did a very good job explaining things to the two young men and in answering any questions they had. Your parents should be very proud of you. You do the company good.
Ron, I have watched you for two years and love all your episodes
You are a great teachers and man . Iam a 77 year old lady and I can watch your videos over and over. I love your Patience tell you how you teach your members of your crew your son I even like when you had your wife and them on it with the talk shows You're such a good role model and I just think you're a very great person keep on keep on take care.
Ethan is doing a great job training the new guys great seeing how he has done on the video you guys are doing blessings to the whole crew at Mid west towing and recovery
Seems funny, I will watch! I am going to trucking school 2025 to honor my grandfather's memories when I was a kid, me and him would truck from tennessee to Texas. I am very excited to get my cdl class a.
When I used to live in Texas, I would drive back to Indiana to visit parents and drove the interstates inbetween. Would use I-65 to get in and out of Indiana. Good luck with your career!
Just remember to trip plan every load. It’s pretty easy now due to google maps.
Ethan is becoming a great teacher just like dad. Great job Ron!!
WOW. This is Ethan. Has performed very well and teaching great.
Awesome video guys...! Like the guys below mentioned... This is the exact reason why (along with using my GPS) I carry one of those paper road maps. I too found out that strictly relying on a GPS will sometime take you down roads that are let's just say back woods... Ethan you are your dads spitten image...! It's so uncanny it's almost unreal...You not only Sound like your dad but you act like him... Just listening to you is unreal... your inflections and your tone of voice and the way you pronounce the words is the way your dad sounds... Also, I really like the way you took the time to explain to the guy on what roads to travel...! 👍💯 Now that's excellent customer service brother... Mr. & Mrs. Pratt... You both should be extremely proud of your son and for doing a great job of raising him...!
Love it when Ethan takes charge.
Awesome job Ethan your truck is kicking butt om these recoveries good job on training the new guys your dad has got to be proud of the way your working thru the situations and figuring out the best solution, Ron awesome job and training Ethan
Ethan and those two young men did a fantastic job. 😃😃😃😃😃😃
Ethan and his new crew did a wonderful awesome job God Bless you all
GPS: Getting People Stuck (or sunk) for 20+ years and still going strong😂😂😂
@@hirisk761 ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I'm stealing this one!!!
Great Job Ethan and Team. Keep up the Strong 💪 Efforts and Thanks for taking us along on another Call. 👍🙏
We are very proud of how well he is doing and how patient he is training others. Thanks for watching and God bless.
More and more impressed with the younger Pratt with every video.
Nice video Ethan! Two years ago you were the prodigy, now you're aducating the next generation. Good luck on your career!
Love the preview of the next recovery. Those coils are usually HEAVY!
Ron and Ethan, great job on this video. Tears and God bumps from all the kindness and respect that you bring to us with each video. Gob Bless, God Speed, and may He protect you and your family all the days of your life.
Thank you so much and we are glad you enjoy the channel. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Excellent video as always! Ron and Ethan, both of you would be great airline pilots: thourogh briefing to the driver, clear commands, safety in your mind at all times etc.!
I really like the way you commit to your job!
Second episode I have seen of Either on his own with younger people with him. So proud of how he works with and teaches them. Great with the customer too. Totally different person than prior episodes . As one Dad to another you should be "as proud as a Prairie Dog" for his growth and the young man you and Mom have raised.
We are very proud of his growth in the industry. He is so much more confident when he is on his own. I'm super impressed with his teaching skills too. Thanks for watching and God bless.
Ethan it's always a pleasure to see you in control of these situations. You're a chip off the old block ❤
Ron you should be so proud of Ethan . The next generation of Midwest truck is in VERY capable hands. Keep up the good work.
We are very proud of him. He showcases his talents and abilities more so when I am not around. We were taught, by my father to defer to the elder operator and he does this a lot. He is far more capable and smarter than some give him credit for. He has watched and retained so much more than I did at 21. Thank you for watching and God bless.
@@RonPratt Thanks alot for explaining that Ron. I sometimes wondered why Ethan seemed vers active in some videos and so passive when you were around. Thats explains those 2 views of him. And yes, he had me fouled believing it was you for quite sometime into the video too. 😂
Good morning from the beautiful state of Colorado. I love watching Ethan and how much he has learned from his dad.
Great job guys as always very professional and polite ! Great you were able to give him directions as to where he was going !👍👍
"Whoop, that was my head. That's also my head. Nope, that's still my head." 🤣
That is Ethan's personality coming through on this clip. He has a dry sense of humor and doesn't hesitate to put himself out there as the target. He is a Pratt after all. Thank you for watching and God bless.
@@RonPratt Yeah, I know. I have a similar sense of humor myself. It's one of the many reasons I've been watching y'all for about as long as the channel has existed. God Bless, brother.
I came up in trucking before GPS, relying on paper maps... i always wrote out my turns and stops.... for the amount of times Ethan had to tepeat the directions, and the fact this driver got burned once by GPS, i for sure would have had pen and paper out, taking notes. Guess I'm just old(er) school....
Hi Ron,
You must be so proud of Ethan, following in your footsteps.
You have instilled in him, all he needs to be successful.
May God Bless and Protect You!
Thank you so much, we are very proud of how far he has advanced. He is smart and knows more than I did at 21. Thanks for watching and God bless.
Ethan you have came along way since I started watching, calm cool and don’t get excited. Keep it up.
I know he appreciates all of the kind comments. He tends to get bombarded with the negatives, at times. He has certainly learned a great deal at 21. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Good Morning There My Good Big Bro Ron Pratt Sir & I Am Still Praying For You & All Of You're Whole Family & Staff Of All Of The People That Is Involved In The Automobile Accident
Thank You So Very Much There My Good Big Bro Ron Pratt Sir
Thank You So Very Much There To Everyone Else
Ethan training the new guys. He knows this trade, especially the straight stick wrecker. Now to get the driver going in the right direction.
That GPS can be something else anymore. I know I followed it quite a bit because I'm a life alert install rep. That thing took me places where it was wrong. Had to stop and ask for directions many times. I could only imagine with a truck driver. God Bless you guys, Ron, and all that you guys do.
Right at the end Ron snuck out of Ethan's mouth "There ya go" lol
Good Morning from Chicago…the front end of that Western star just looks mean 😎 I love how that truck looks.
I’m really enjoying seeing Ethan grow into his new role as a teacher and coach explaining how to set up the pulls and describing how the operation is proceeding! ❤😊
Thank you, it is a source of great pride for us. He is more knowledgeable than I was at 21. Thanks for watching and God bless.
I can’t tell you how much it puts a smile on me to hear Ethan teach these new guys and watch him teach all the safe tricks
He is one who learns by observation. Everyone has varied learning styles. He has picked up a lot from doing that and has turned into quite the patient teacher. We are proud of him. He has gained more knowledge than I had at 21. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Loving the new door decals
This isn’t shocking in the least., I drive a cement mixer and we have a giant detailed map of our entire area where they batch our loads, and because apparently guys can’t read maps and follow their cellphone GPS they find themselves down roads with no trucks allowed,, going over weight limit bridges.. it’s insane…. It’s like dude really you couldn’t see the sign.. oh my gps told me to go that way., and I always say hey if your gps told you to drive off a cliff would you ., and the scary thing is., I think they would.. common sense and reading signs goes a long ways,,
The 11'-8"/12'-4" bridge would agree with you. Plenty of signs too many morons choose(?) to ignore!
I totally agree with you. I am pretty much retired now driving trucks. I have noticed that these 'new' truck drivers are getting too used to GPS and other electronic directional devices. They are not using common sense but they will learn.. 😀
Comon sense is a very rare commodity. From what i can tell it always has been.
People have driven down a wharf and off the end into the ocean because their GPS told them to...
It just comes with experience. You gotta mess up once if you wanna learn. I bet he’ll think twice about turning down a county road from now on
I'm a truck driver myself. I dont understand why this driver would even try a sketchy road like that one. Great job by Ethan & crew. Stay safe guys. God bless
I will just say he must not have been driving for very long
Many of us just have to learn by making the oopsies. LOL Lord knows I have made several. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Hi Ron. = I always carry a paper map to double-check GPS. == Paper is NEVER WRONG!!!
@3252fly I'd qualify that..I had printed maps be wrong in the past. They never get a dead battery. And don't give you wrong directions (as YOU need to read them).... but they have been wrong before!
Very well done. You learn quickly over the last little while. Nice job
Thanks for watching and God bless.
I’m a retired snow plow dispatcher. You wouldn’t believe how many times my plow trucks had to rescue some twit whose GPS had led them into the boondocks on a road that had most definitely not been made for a tractor trailer. 🙄 When you add a good snowstorm into the mix, things get really hairy.
I am okay with snow, but it is the ICE that worries me. We don't get a ton of either anymore so I can't complain. Years ago, it was scary when the black ice coated first, then snow on top. Dangerous and deadly. I'm sure you have a lot of stories to tell from that job. Thank you for watching and God bless.
@@RonPratt I’ll take a foot of snow over fifteen minutes of sleet and freezing rain anytime and twice on a weekend! Everything goes to hell in that fifteen minutes.
This is a very common occurrence in the UK, though it usually happens to drivers from the EU who blindly follow their GPS without setting it to "HGV Only" routes!.
As for Ethan sounding like Ron, the same used to happen with me and my father when we'd answer the phone, we'd invariably have to call for the other to take the call.
Where is the common sense nowadays? ❤ your videos. 1:25
Father, like son Ethan, you do sound like your father. God bless you and your crew
God bless you Ron and crew love the videos I been watching you guys for a while now everything you guys do is simply amazing
Ethan, you have come so far and learned so much. I hope your father is proud.
We are all very proud of that boy. He has learned far more than I had at 21. He is often a quiet observer, but takes it all in and then retrieves it when needed. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Man I thought it was Ron talking 😂 Ethan your dad must be super proud of you. You’ve come along way brother. Happy to see you out here doing your thing. Be safe and God bless you and the family. 🙏
We are very proud of his mastery and growth. He has become quite the teacher. Thanks for watching and God bless.
@@RonPratt glad to see him doing his thing. God bless.
if you want to travel in time and hear young Ron talking watch this video!!!! Great job Ethan!!!
Much better equipment than what young Ron got to use. Technology improves with time.
Ethan is an awesome teacher just like you Ron god bless you your family and crew.
Thanks so much for the positive comments. Thank you for watching and God bless.
GPS can be a nice thing to have, but if they're not kept up to date, they can lead you in the wrong direction. Would be really cool to see both of the Western Stars working side by side sometime.
Good training video... 😊
Ethan got the best of both parents. Very calm and deliberate. Respectful and patient. No disrespect for the driver for getting himself in a bind. No ego to feed. Takes the Golden Rule to heart. The driver was shaken and didn't want another delay or problem. Ethan took his time to show him the route.
Recall back a ways in the Sierra, there is a mountain road which the truckers map show as a shortcut between two state routes. It isn't. There is a very sharp reverse curve on a downhill grade. The road is dirt/gravel. Log trucks can make it but not a 40 foot box trailer. A semi with a full load of bagged sugar got tangled up on this curve. In the pouring rain. Bent the trailer. It had to be unloaded in the rain. By hand. Looked at the trailer later. Right side looked like an accordion.
Ok I was 10 minutes in b4 I realized it wasn't ron! Matter of fact I was like, Ron's driving ethans truck!! I didn't realize it was Ethan until I saw the tattoo
Stay safe and God bless
#wherestalon
Thanks Ethan for another great video. Nice work Ethan and crew. You did a great job.
Thanks.
We so appreciate the kind commentary where Ethan is concerned. He often gets the brunt of the negative, but is learning so well. He has developed into a great teacher. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Every time my brain defaults to thinking its Ron and it takes me a good minute to think hey this isnt quite Ron 😅 it's Ethan. I cant fathom how fast he's learnt and not just the trade, but also the way of thinking and acting that makes Ron so special. Well done to all of you !
Now that's a new meaning to offroading.
You are correct!!! I am just glad there weren't any significant issues. Thank you for watching and God bless.
GPS and Google Maps great combination, there is road near us that has 10-16 inch diameter trees growing in the middle of the road and the bridge on it was washed away in the 1938 Hurricane. But Google Maps and and some GPS show it as an active road. Oh yes I tried to get Google Maps to correct the map the did redirecting the road dow the neighbors driveway.
Fantastic job Ethan and the new guys
Ethan, I personally think the side road would have been a better choice to turn around. But I was not there, and ultimately, your turn around worked, you got the truck out and all was safe. Good job! 🇺🇲
Ethan is becoming quite the TH-cam himself
Looking forward to seeing more
Always look forward to your videos
Mr Ron. Ethan is doing an awesome job. Thanks for sharing and stay safe.
Awesome video keep up with a great work and be safe out there.
Absolutely love watching your content Ron all the way from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺👍👍👍
Thank you and I am happy you enjoy the videos. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Nice job there guys I like your explanation on why not to use the Outriggers when winching which makes a lot sense I also like Ethan's professionalism when he's engaging with a customer😊
Thanks so much for the positive comments. Ethan has gotten some really negative commentary. He watches and learns a bit differently than some others. However, when put to the test, he certainly produces. He has more knowledge than I did at 21. He loves to engage with guys who have stories. He is quite respectful and patriotic for his generation. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Ethan, you're an excellent trainer; patient and informative. Lots of comments say you sound so much like your father, but I can tell you apart. Your voice is more baritone and your southern drawl is slightly stronger than his. But I admit, it's a subtle difference! :)
He reads all the comments as well, and I know appreciates the positive ones. There are subtle differences in our voices, but it seems to be getting a bit more difficult to decipher which is which. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Outstanding job by Ethan and the 2 new team members. Ethan has come a long long way in such a short time. I know that Ron and Mom Pratt are very proud. STAY SAFE OUT THERE.
We are very proud of how patient of a teacher he has become. I have to say, he is the ONE person who will NEVER turn me down when I have a call. I can always count on him to show up. Thank you for watching and God bless.
@@RonPratt any chance of having a video that formally but briefly introduces the two new guys in this video?
Thanks Ethan! Another Pratt teaching the way. 👍
Yes, he has turned out to be quite the patient teacher. His mother and I are proud of him and the things he is accomplishing. It took me years longer to gather all the knowledge he has. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Another awesome job Rod
Thank you for watching and God bless.
Good morning Ron. Happy Friday.
How quickly time passes. Wasn't it just last week Ethan was still in High School?
Now look at him, all grown up and has turned into the fine young man I knew he would become.
Of course it had to be. He has an outstanding role model who loves him so very much!
Yes he is 21 now and has so much more knowledge than I did at his age. He has become a very patient teacher and working toward his potential in many areas. Now, if he would just clean his room.....his momma would be happy, LOL. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Thank you for another Great video. Cheers
I'm so glad you enjoy them. Thank you for watching and God bless.
You got to be so proud of Ethan, he handles his work in a truly professional manner and is so good at training new staff. Well done and keep the content rolling in
Welcome new guys you sure will have a great time and mentor working with Midwest Truck Great Job Ethan for his teaching. Great video.
I am very proud of how well he trains and the patience he demonstrates. Not sure I could have done that at 21. Thanks for watching and God bless.
Great video Ethan you were right about the Rotater not being able to get there
It took me a few moments to realize that Ethan was talking and not Ron. Ethan is doing a real good job.
Welcome Alex. You are in good hands no matter which one you get.
To all truck drivers. If you're using GPS change settings to satellite mode, preview the routing before you get of 4 lane HWY. As a grain truck driver i go to many farms that are very limited to routes to get to farm . GPS will try to send you on route that eather save fuel or faster route. Always use satellite mode and preview route.
Dang I went back to 15:01 and it is Ethan in the muffler. His video skills have improved greatly! I would have sworn it was Ron that whole time. Great video guys!!
He has become quite the operator, and is amazing at customer service. We have also been so impressed with his ability to calmly teach new employees. We are very proud of him. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Well Ron I'd say soon you can sit in your comfy office chair and only go out on the tow calls when you feel like it. Keep up the good work fellas and fellets.👍
I wish I could, maybe some day. It takes all of us to run the calls and the shop. I am working on lightening up a bit. Ethan has done a wonderful job of taking calls anytime I have asked him to. That has helped a great deal. I'm not as young as I was. Thank you for watching and God bless.
A+ Ethan! You explain things clearer than your dad does. He sometimes makes it more complicated than necessary. Anyhow, you're quite impressive, young man. Now if you'd just get a haircut....😄
Team Steam you guys are awsome . Great to see someone who takes so much pride in there work . Have never seen you not go the extra mile on a job , to make sure it comes out looking new .
Keep up the great work you do . I am about to start to restore an old Mack . Will be following the way you do everything . That way I know it will come out the best it can .
Thank you so much for the positive commentary. That is what makes this worth while, that viewers enjoy the challenges, mistakes and successes we have in our daily work. Good luck on the restoration. I wish I had the time to engage in some of that. I found our old Marmon wrecker, but it was in pretty rough shape. I'd have loved to have bought it and brought it back home. Thank you for watching and God bless.
That's my head, also my head, still my head. I lost it. I didn't know that you were so funny Ethan! Good job guys.
He has a dry sense of humor and it appears at the most random times, lol. He is quite the character at times. Oh the stories I could share.......but I won't. LOL Thank you for watching and God bless.
so good to be taught by a REAL pro 👍
Ethan is truly finding his feet where this is concerned. He is soft spoken and patient. Although so many think he is disinterested, he is one who learns by watching and standing back. He absorbs things differently than some. When he is put to the task, on his own he delivers. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Personally I don't know how drivers get in this position. I would definitely stop before going anywhere that looks like that with a 70 foot long 80.000 lb truck with google maps you can pull up the satellite picture to see where you are and where you're going .
I have done something similar in a snow storm. You start down the road and it does not seem too bad and things get worse and worse. In the case of snow if I stopped I knew I would be stuck, in the case of the truck you get in far enough that backing out seems almost impossible and there is no place to turn around. So in both cases you press ahead hoping to make it out the other side. It has worked out for me in the past. My two cents
I’m sure he is relatively new and hadn’t been in an area like this before
nice job guys
Ethan your dad taught you really well on how to do everything the right way keep up the great work and the good videos
I appreciate the kind comments. He has absorbed so much information and has his own techniques. I was nowhere near as informed as he is at 21. Thanks for watching and God bless.
Great job Ethan, you can take over for Ron. Keep up the good work. Have a safe weekend

He is far more capable and confident when he is on his own. He watches and learns, that's his style. He is far more knowledgeable at 21 than I was. I hope he continues to master the job and carry on for our family. Thank you for watching and God bless.
