How long do bass strings last? How many gigs will a set of strings last for? When should I change my strings? - questions every bassist and guitarist have pondered at some point in their playing careers. There is no definitive answer, there are way too many different factors to consider.
BUT - to get an idea and a ball park figure, I've fitted a brand new set of Rotosound SM66 Swing Bass steel roundwound strings to this newly cleaned and set-up @Status Graphite Empathy bass. I'm going to use this bass on as many gigs as possible over the coming weeks and months and will upload progress videos after each show with tone examples and updates at various gig milestones.
Join me on the journey and we'll find out just how many gigs these strings can stand!!

great idea Brooksy, I'll be coming along for the ride. Sweat is such a big contributor to string life, I had a guitar player friend borrow a bass once, his sweat was so corrosive it stripped the plating of the top of the bridge and the strings played like noodles afterwards, I'm thankful I don't have that problem. Keep well mate.:)

I can’t wait to hear the updates.
I just put a brand new set of stainless steel Rotosound Swing Bass 66’s on my Spector NS4CRFM, and a new set of GHS Bass Boomers on my Spector Euro 6LT. While both of these brands seem to lose their initial brightness after about a week of steady playing, I like their broken-in sound, and for me, they keep that tone for a very long time.
The reason I choose these brands is because of their midrange qualities. Swing Bass 66’s have a really nice upper midrange, and Bass Boomers have a punchy sounding low midrange.
In my humble opinion, of course.
    Best regards!!!

Thanks, Mike ... Extremely well done video! I especially LOVE the live gig shots! Thanks for posting, brother! My 2 cents as a bass player .... Elixir strings (for me) last WAY LONGER than any other roundwound I have tried over 40+ years of playing. That's just my opinion of course.

No joke, i've tried RS66LD since i restringing my first (Used) Squier P-Bass, that also came with a thinner set of steel Rotos. It never rusted for 3 Years, Even after i jokingly swap those sets to my Squier Jazz, Sterling Ray and finally on my cousin's Ibanez Talman. Also, i lived in Indonesia, where a set of fresh uncoated steel EB slinky or D'Addario would rust and accumulates gunks in mere two or three months. I currently uses The RS66LF on my P-Bass.

I found the link & yes I already knew what your reply would be to this question as there are too many variables to take into account with a new set of strings...
As some might always want that bright clear sound which was popular over the 80s or some bassists might want to dull their strings down to get rid of the new clear sound & go for a flatter deadened sound à la James Jamerson as legend has it once he bought a new set of strings he played them until they were completely dull but still with a workable deep sound & (again) according to those who knew him said that he never changed his strings once after that first set were broken in...
Then if you take what Mark King of Level 42 says it can ve completely the opposite of James Jamerson...
As I found this out on an Easter Egg hidden extra when I bought as soon as it came out on the DVD Live At Wembley 1987 & once you click on it it's obviously set many years later & Mark is saying something along the lines of congratulations as you've found our hidden extra & basically Mark has a quick chat about what happens during gigs & his bass technician is seen changing strings on one of his Status Bass Guitars...
Now I could be wrong as alot of belongs are still boxed since I moved into this flat but I think Mark said he has his strings changed after every performance but I'd need to dig out that Live At Wembley 1987 DVD to be sure but with Micks style/a sound check & all the songs he plays on 1 live gig would sound feasible with the amount of playing he can do in one gig...
Though others might use 1 set of strings & not change their strings who might play in (lets say in) a Level 42 covers band & that same set of strings on another 1 or maybe 2 shows might work but thats running the risk of hope the G or any string doesnt snap & lighter gauges of 30 To 90 string that Mark uses can see the G or D string snap since its the one of lightest set of strings on his 4 String Bass unless that is that you are Michael Manring who uses a 20 on G string on his fretless Zon Hyperspace Bass Guitar & all the vast multiple altered tuning he cab do on his bridge along with his drop down tuners on his headstock & for me it comes down to each & every bass player as they will know what style they are playing & what gauge of strings they prefer & even a string can suddenly snap even if it is a heavier gauge string & why yiu should always have a back up Bass guitar incase of such occurrences...
This was & is & interesting question as you & anyone who's played for years will tell those who are unsure that it's down to many variables & the main one is (for me anyway) what style the bassist plays & what should sound & style he or she is going for!..

I meant to add my apologies...
As when I looked at my comment from much earlier this morning I didn't realise how long that comment was but honestly I never start out to type long comments but either my experiences in the past come back or I'm not sure as to what someone has typed!..
Plus , ever since my mobile provider dropped using Auto Correct which I didn't like anyway , but its caused me & many friends of mine who use the same maker of phone have had issues with typing a word we know we have typed in correctly but another word shows up or the spelling of a specific word is wrong but we might catch some wrong words typed in instead of what we typed but not all...
I know the longer the message the more there's a chance of this happening... As I've said I only have my phone to send or reply to a comment & all I have is a small rectangular box & each time I start a new paragraph it moves upwards & hence I eventually don't see what I've typed in until I feel I should check it & though you'll have no need to read it again I fixed the one from earlier this morning as what I heard in my head I forgot to type in my comment & sentence didnt maje sense..

I say this with no disrespect Mike but its sorted of kind of asking how long is a piece of string!..
At the moment ive just checked was on my TH-cam saved Channels like yours so i havent had the time to listen to your points of view & the many factors that can come into the the equation & though (im guessing were talking about today) its subjective you only have to look at the one & only Jame's Jamerson as did everything to get his new set of strings sounding a dull as possible & as legend has it after he did this he supposedly never needed to change his strings ever again...
There's a Rig Rundown on TH-cam of what John Taylor of Duran Duran will predominantly take while Touring with Duran Duran & i was surprised to see no sign of any of his Matsomoku made Aria Pro II SB Range of bass guitars but according to John Taylor once he decided to try the Peavey Cirrus model (i think it is) hes been using them since but youll hear him talking about 1 of his bass guitars that he did (as have i) where he played that bass until the strings were so dull but gave a heavy tone to them & he kind of laughingly jokes about how one of tge guys that looks after his basses changed those deadened strings akin to James Jamerson but whoever it was that changed those strings that John waa happy with how they sounded , changed them over with a New Set of strings without checking with John Taylor first...
You'll know better than I as i believe you have chatted with Mark King throughout the years but ive seen a few uploads hes done & hes more inti changing his strings or should i say his tech guy who looks after them changes them after each gig as im sure he stated this during one of his Lockdown Uploads & he individually changes each string on his bass & if i remember correctly he plays along to " Gaddaffi Duck "
For me the heavier gauge strings will last longer as i rarely use the bass guitars set up with them but an of my bass guitars that have either 40 to 100 or 30 to 90 will always be changed alot more as im more comnfortable playing my basses with those gauges , especially the 30 to 90 , as i'll play a hell of alot more finger style & slap style predominantly on 30 to 90s
I remember we always booked in a 3 hour practice session while waiting for our gigs to get the final date & places arranged & there times wed double book a Practice Room which gave us 6 hours of just going for it with our already finished & recorded songs but i remember 1 Double Booking was during a rather long heatwave & wouldnt you know it the Recording & Rehearsal Studios Air Conditioning wasn't working but since most of the regular bands we'd see & say Hi to while we also had booked a room all cancelled apart from us as i guess the others figured they'd be better to take the night off & relax with a few beers...
So we got tge pick of any room & the most popular one in the summer was the Practice Room that had a Fire Exit at the farest away way from the entry door to the practice room & as you entered you could see that both the entrance & exit doors were exactly in the same position as each door...
My strings were due to be changed but i figured we are in for 6 hours so lets put a frezh set of 30 To 90 Strings on & i kid you not & even though we opened the Fire Exit door that lead to stairs that took you to the bottom of the building & safety saw a brand new set of 30 To 90 needing to be replaced once i got home as the sweat coming off my fingers was evident & on the joking side we left covered in sweaty T Shirts or Shirts & im sure i lost sime weight that night & the only reason no one passed out was because always knew to take bottled water chilled in the fridge or take in cans of fizzy soft drinks but in heat like that most of us didnt want to stop off at a local store on the way to but these items as many of us went straight home from work , got changed , & then drove to do our practice of already finished songs & seeing what we could come up with that night with new material & thankfully if we forgot our drinks the Recording & Practice Studio had a drinks dispenser & next to that a food dispenser...
If wed done the who lets get drunk while practing we all knew that was a quick way to passing out even in a 3 hour practice session & because we liked to get as much done as possible in the Practice Rooms for 3 hours it was rare to get a Double Booking unless we specifically adked to be booked in on the first available spot as it was a vert busy plsce & most only practise for 3 hours & at times wed ask for a 6 hour booking or like that night we were the onky ones to show up & had the pick of whatever room we wanted & since we knew the Manager for years we always took the First Practice room but this wasnt because it was better than the rest of the rooms as they had exactly the same gear as the other...
We just liked to get into the first room as it meant less walking as it had long halls & more often than not we hated walking the extra distance but thankfully on that sweaty fueled night we got the last room to practice in as we knew that had the fire exit & as soon as we arrived we were already offered the option to cancel & there & then & there would be no Extra Fee to pay for cancelling...
The Manager told us this as soon as he buzzed us in & that it might be best for us to cancel as the air conditioning went on the fritz & that 6 hours even with the Emergency Door being opened wasnt going to help...
As it wasnt so much the heat but the humidity & the first person we asked if he wanted to cancel was our drummer but he declined & put it down to youthful exuberance & the desire to succeed we , in my opinion , foolishly agreed not only ti do 3 hours but the 6 , no sorry thatd be lying as we left about 40 minutes earlier & onky practiced for 5 hours & 20 minutes but with hindsight we shouldve turn around & walked back out as it was pretty brutal but it used to make me wonder how bands could practice in such heat that was more often than not an every day occurence...
I'd definitely go with that 6 , sorry 5 hours & 20 minutes as the one that saw me change the strings again that same night as i always took at least 3 extra set of 30 to 90 if i was going to predominantly playing my basses with those strings as they can snap &were always quicker to go dull the fastest & as i said in a recent post when you cleaned you Status Graphite Empathy Bass Guitar that i noticed the Rotosound Strings & in my reply i mentioned you were another Rotosound user also...
Since i was always into that more clear/clean sound i found very quickly i loved the Rotosound Strings but i always had to order in advance for Rotosound 30 To 90 as my usual got to Instrument Shop only ever had that gauge in once & i soon learned to adk the lads to order them for me but in packs of 4 & not once did i see a 5th of 6th packed go up on the wall as they only ordered exactly the amount i ordered & no more...
You know me i'll get round to watching your uoad eventually & ill add any extra comments but i doubt it as ive covered what i think might be on that uoload but i wont know until i watch it... lol

      @@BrooksysBassCorner
      Hi Mike ,
No I never saw any number countdown & without sounding dumb what is it as I've been preoccupied cleaning the Brass Nut on my Matsumoku made 1981 Aria Pro II SB1000 earlier today...
This one didn't look black but more of a dark chocolate colour but honestly loosening the strings (which I'll be replacing with new at someponit) & getting them out of the way of this filthy coloured nut...
Then covering the fretboard with 3 strips of masking tape , with 1 pushed as close to the bridge as possible & then tearing off another slip of masking tape & playing that just before the first part ends will see the fretboard covered from any Brasso Swabs I used to clean the original Brass Nut...
It took some time & patience (unfortunately something I'm short of because of my injuries & ill health) but that's all it took to take a caked in dirty dark coured Brass Nut & rubbing & wiping & rubbing until you start to see thar Brass colour start to show through & by the time I was finished it now looks back to its shinny Brass Made Nut...
We both have the same feeling about the conditions bass players can let their bass guitars get into a disgusting mess & just time/brasso swabs & about 30 minutes later I had cleaned the top/both the upper & lower side of the nut & the front of the nut as you look down from the bridge end to the nut & then i clean the opposite side of the nut that looks down from the tuners straight down the length of the fretboard & thats all it needed...
I'm not OCD about cleaning my bass/lead & acoustic guitars but I've never & would never let any of them that dirty at certain parts...
I'm holding out for a NOS (New Old Stock) original bridge or one that just (like the nut) has surface dirt that will clean off nicely & the bridge won't detract from the overall look of this 41 year old Matsumoku made Aria Pro II SB1000 Bass Guitar...
I still intend to keep the original bridge so its as authentic as possible but the current bridge on this SB1000 will never clean up as its been worn down too much & no amount of brasso will clean this bridge up as the damage is too far gone with regards to how it looks...
It functions absolutely fine but that too far gone bridge definitely takes away the look of this SB1000 as with a bridge that was NOS & of shiny brass would really see this 41 year old Matsumoku made Aria Pro II SB1000 pop as the body is in great condition for a 41 year old bass guitar & yes it has a few bumps here & there but most of any of the marking is the usual swirl marks which I'm going to buy that Dunlop Wax you used on your Status Graphite Empathy Bass Guitar & see how that works...
Put it this was with a NOS Bridge on it you'd think it was new from a certain distance & , again , apart from the bridge I didn't expect the body to be that good...
As you know the first set of dual concentric pot was damaged on my Matsumoku made Aria Pro II SBR-60 & I gave it to my luthierr friend & we chatted today & it should be ready by next week but my point is that bass guitar has alot more marks & dents so I was expecting the SB1000 to be in good condition body wise but thankfully it is & maybe that wax will help with some of the surface marks but at the moment I'm 50/50 on the bridge as I'd love a NOS Bridge but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it if I don't get a replacement bridge but honestly it deserves a NOS Bridge because the rest is in great shape...
Wishing You All The Best Over This Weekend & As Always Take Care Bud...

Yeah Mike I think your correct but being brutally honest I wouldn't bother doing it if I didn't think it needed one as the erosion has gone straight into the bridge an innumerable amount of small parts have flaked off leaving some jagged edges & a few times during the weekend I cut my pinky finger a few times as I like playing up at the bridge area for that tighter punchier sound...
Don't get me wrong as when it came to co-writing & composing with the lead vocalist & lead & rhythm guitarist's I knew what songs would benefit a sound from the middle distance between the bridge to the start of the fretboard which many 1 Pickup Bass Guitars would normally place them there to try & get a sweet spot from the where the fretboard ends & just far enough away from the bridge hence most 1 Pickup Bass Guitars I've come across usually sees the pickup play right in the centre were the distance from fretboard to Pickup & Bridge to Pickup is usually the same distance between both points...
You never did tell me what the countdown number was about because as you know I like to follow & support your TH-cam Channel...
1 Question if I may ask you!..
I think I know what it is but since I haven't owned a vintage Matsomoku made Aria Pro II SB1000 Bass Guitar since the early 90s which was the fretless that I wish I never traded in but I was stupid or naive enough to think I'd get one back or an SB Range Of Fretless that I could use as when we're you get we don't think companies are going to shut down & the one I never thought would happen was the Music Industry has been close to flatlining since 1999 ended & 2000 started as I always thought the Music Industry (whether I made it or not) was always going to be this huge business that was always going to be there...
There was always going to be new solo acts or bands signed & it would never end but when it only takes 10,000 Digital or Physical or Digital Downloads of a Singles to reach Number 1 then its definitely a sign of how band its got as I remember solo acts & bands had to sell millions a day just to get into the Top 5 & a shot at maybe having a Number 1 Hit & hence why I always support the amazing musicians on TH-cam but I respectfully ask them if they have ever thought of going solo with a backing band or if certain musicians wanted to join up with other fellow musicians to form a band & I say this with respect " Even if it's just a covers band " that Toured the Cities Pubs but none seemed interested & just wanted to play by themselves or maybe I'm just picking them up wrong as I no a few have had solo albums out but who are they working with & are they touring as alot of these young men & women are amazing & bands of old would've snapped them up during auditions but this is my main point & that is if they did join a band then they'd need to play in a way or style that best suited the music those bands were making & maybe most of today's great younger bassist don't want to do that as they are used to working themselves &/or they don't or won't want to change or at least adapt their style to work with others...
If it wasn't for my health issues I'd be doing what your doing as I love listening to & playing music within a band environment...
Speaking of which I take it you had no gigs this weekend or do you have one for tomorrow!...
Early I got the original Brass Nut on my Matsumoku made 1981 Aria Pro II SB1000 to come up looking nice & shiny now but there was one thing I spotted since the start of January this year when I was looking at anyone doing covers or sound demo's for a Matsumoku Made Aria Pro II SB1000 Bass Guitar because by hook or by crook I swore I'd get one over this Summer as a Birthday Gift to myself & I knew that more than likely I'd need to get one from Japan & have it shipped over & once the Import Tax was paid it would be eventually delivered , which it was...
As I've said before I always like to turn control knobs & circular turning knobs or flick on/off switch so I can listen for any unusual & wrong noise before plugging into my bass amp as thats how I heard & could feel the busted dual concentric pot on my Matsumoku made Aria Pro II SBR-60 Bass Guitar & I'm looking forward to that coming back as I always prefer bass guitars with 2 pickups situated at even points from the end of the fretboard & the bridge & that way I can dial in more sounds...
My apologies as I seriously digress ,
What I noticed on all (except yours) of the Matsumoku made Aria Pro II SB1000 Bass Guitars was the Red Light was flickering on & off on mine & at that time I hadn't or you hadn't upload your review & sound demo but I noticed you Red Light was constantly on & no flickering...
So after I cleaned the Brass Nut I swapped out the two 9 Volt Batteries for 2 I had hear but it still did the same but then again I've had those 9 Volt Batteries sitting here for a while & as part of my cleaning & watching my bass guitars if I think that most are going to sit there for a while before I use them again I always remove the battery or batteries & place them in the usual rectangular box for fitting spare strings/plectrums digital tuner et al in their hard cases & I did this because a friend of friend told me decades ago about the grief he had because left his 9 Volt Battery in either too long but unlikely as they'll usually die out first but the 9 Volt battery in his bass guitar has alkaline leakage & since I heard that story I've never left my batteries plugged in & though you may disagree with this way of doing it but if there's going to be any leakage from any 9 Volt battery then it wasn't going to leak out into my various bass guitars...
After changing to my two 9 Volt batteries it did the same but I've had them kicking about for a few years & I'm hoping that the flickering is caused by my two 9 Volt batteries not being 100% fully charged or could this be a wiring issue & though I doubt it is but without taken you for granted i thought I'd ask you as you own a Matsumoku made Aria Pro II SB1000 in the same natural finish as mine & i think yours is a 1984 but ill be checking your Playing & Review Demo of your Aria again as it has taken 3 decades to get my own Matsumoku Made Aria Pro II SB1000 Bass Guitar again but this time a fretted one & I barely remember using the Aria Pro II SB1000 Fretless Bass Guitar that I had for a short period & hence why I traded it back (at the time) into the only large'sh but the only Instrument Store in my City at that time...
You can choose to give out information or not but I don't think you mentioned on your Matsumoku made Aria Pro II SB1000 Bass Guitar play through Demo & Review where you got yours & how long ago ill understand if you cant be bothered...
I'll watch your Review & Demo of your Matsumoku made Aria Pro II SB1000 Bass Guitar incase you did mention it & I missed it & Yes I'm really looking forward to getting my Matsumoku made Aria Pro II SBR-60 Bass Guitar & my Luthier friend today said that he's giving everything inside a good clean up , as there was some slight buzzing from the 2nd dual concentric pots & he's made sure the 3 way tone selector & the flick on & off switches were clean & he's lubed them up enough so as they turn smoothly without making any noises but it's the time period of nearly 3 weeks that he's had it that has me slightly concerned on what I will owe him but you know what as much as that SBR-60 arriving the next day with a broken dual concentric pot seriously p*ssed me off I'm not letting anything spoil what has taken me decades to get & part of this was my naivety as I honestly thought one would show up in Instrument Store's near me or within the UK but not once did it ever happen & whatever my Luthier friends charges me isn't going to ruin this for me either as not only did I get an original Matsumoku made Aria Pro II SB1000 Bass Guitar but wouldn't you know it & why I budgeted for such an outcome & that was no sooner had I paid for my Aria Pro II SB1000 from Japan that 1 week later I got the chance to buy an Aria Pro II SBR-60 Bass Guitar..
These 2 Bass Guitars are going to help me get back into practicing as even with my health issues I always tried to practice for a certain amount of time on a daily basis & as you'll know once you get to a certain skill level it's more about practising to keep you in good working order & your muscle memory working just fine but I haven't unfortunately played any of my bass guitars since I moved into this flat 2 & a half years ago & in the past I would never do this but certain other things got in the way & I'm just going to have to push myself until I reach the level I was at but you'll also know that doesn't take that long when you have already learned to play an instrument..
As I've already done all the hard work & it's about getting back into rhythmic shape...
If you've got some gigs coming up then as always have fun & all the best Mike & i'll leave you be to enjoy your weekend...

The countdown is here...look at the viewing numbers! th-cam.com/channels/7nm9Nzo12SDQzrxJS8xdVg.html
I bought my Aria off of Ebay in 2013 from an Aria collector....he must be sitting on a pretty penny right now! The LED on mine doesn't flicker...it used to but I had it turned off about 4 years ago as the flicker was audible through the bass signal...and very annoying. I saw no use for it, I either want an LED on or off...not flickering.
I have gigs every week, had two Queen tribute gigs last weekend, off to sunny Kent today for an outdoor festival gig!

I hear ya, brother! I've seen a few horror stories over the years....strings are the least of the owner's problems!

I never understood why people wear gloves when they set up a bass or change strings. It’s not like changing oil in a car. Lmao

Because I wasn't JUST changing the strings... I was also polishing the bass with wax, cleaning the fingerboard, polishing the frets - giving the whole bass a thorough going over, which it hadn't had for some time. And I was doing several basses that day. I rely on my hands, no point trashing them. Cheers for the comment.
