How long do bass strings last? How many gigs will a set of strings last for? When should I change my strings? - questions every bassist and guitarist have pondered at some point in their playing careers. There is no definitive answer, there are way too many different factors to consider.
BUT - to get an idea and a ball park figure, I've fitted a brand new set of Rotosound SM66 Swing Bass steel roundwound strings to this newly cleaned and set-up Status Graphite Empathy bass. I'm going to use this bass on as many gigs as possible over the coming weeks and months and will upload progress videos after each show with tone examples and updates at various gig milestones.
Here we are after gig one. Check the video out to see the current state of play!
Join me on the journey and we'll find out just how many gigs these strings can stand!!

Hi Andy, no I'm not thankfully, all my gigs this month are with bands and artists that I already know the sets for. Any practice at home is being done on other basses from my collection. The strings on the Empathy are just for gigs, nothing else. Thank you for watching and thanks for the comment!

@@BrooksysBassCorner Thanks. The reason I ask is I purchased a set of the new ULTRAMAG STANDARD | 45-105 strings that are meant to have exteneded string, Ive played about 3 gigs and rehearsed twice with them and they sound dead now. Well for the sound that I like. Interested to see how long you get.👍

Interesting. May I ask what bass you are using them on? And is it all of the strings that have died off or just certain strings?

@@BrooksysBassCorner Its a Sadowksy NYC and all strings seem to be the same. Im a pick player, playing classic rock covers so there is a bit of variation not all so heavy.

I have a theory...it's not scientific by any means...but in my experience of 35 years, basses that opt for the traditional 4/5 tuners in a row design tend to 'kill' strings quicker than those of a '2 over 2' or '3 over 2' design. It's not set in stone but the placement of the machineheads and resulting tension of the strings means they lose their 'life' quicker. I've always noticed that the traditional Fender-type design will kill off my strings quickly.
