You should come to Adelaide one day Phil. Our trains are Melbourne in reverse. The Comeng sets are diesel or electric hybrid and the Vlocity's are electric.
Hi Phil, interesting having the bonus coach ride there to Campbelltown. I have been to Canberra by train twice from Sydney. Both trips in 1966 and 1977 were on the Canberra Monaro Express. That Xplorer train certainly looks good. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
this is a good video. they are talking about upgrading canberra station which as our nation's capital is much needed. location as we all know is poor but that is something we have to live with.
The Views might be lovely, and it is a wonderful Part of the world, but to be honest it is genuinely insane a country as rich as Australia hasnt bypassed this slow section of track particularly Sydney to Mittagong and Moss Vale to Goulburn.
Have tried it twice since moving to Canberra - extremely uncomfortable, incredibly high internal decibel level from engine and of course absurdly slow. The staff working in this ancient tech deserve medals.
I've done this trip twice. In 2003 on the return, I was in 1st class at the back of the train. The crew gave out the meal tokens from the front (economy) to the back. By the time they'd reached 1st class, they'd run out of chicken meal tokens, and just had the vegetarian meal tokens. I ended up having a ham & cheese sandwich.
Almost did this trip over the long weekend - did not like the rail coach transfer so went on a direct Murray's coach all the way return Sydney to Canberra. Have been on this train route Sydney Canberra return on Explorer in the past a few times - relaxing but too slow 4.5 hours train compared to 3.5 hours coach and train station is too far out of Caberra City whereas coach stops right by light rail in Caberra City. Limited trains per day whereas coaches every hour departure. I do miss being able to get up and go for a walk through carriage and to buffet to get a meal or snack to stretch my legs something you can't really do on a coach except to use the toilet at the back of tge coach if it works! To answer the question if the service was full - quite booked out as Floriade is on, school holidays and long weekend public holiday. Another reason I took the coach instead and almost every bus was full both directions!
How would you describe the vibration and/or noise from the diesel? I did the trip once over 25 years ago (in an explorer) and found I got motion sick and decided I liked the bus better for a smoother ride. Am I remembering it worse than it is perhaps? I think I could hear it in your video. I like the XPTs better because the diesels are in the power car and not in my carriage :) I will probably do the trip soon so would love your opinion. Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for the ride, Phil - much quicker than the actual trip! I noticed a semaphore signal just after Bowral (or was it Mittagong) - I assume a relic from the past? Also noticed the last few sections seem to be single track rather than duplification?? Cheers!
Ah Campbelltown, my old stomping ground :) Don't mind the Xplorer, dislike the Endeavour. The seats are the key, good to have the XPT seats on Xplorer, not good to have the commuter seats on the Endeavour, especially if you're travelling for longer than 3 hours, as is the case with the Bathurst Bullet.

Great video Phil cheers from Canberra!
Thank you! :)
It was a great little visit!
Nice to ride an Xplorer because they are retiring very soon. So that was good that you got the chance to do that.
Love your work as always Phil.
Thank you :)
That looks like a fun trip Phil. I have been on the Xplorer a few times and never had any bad experiences with it.
I’ll be doing this trip (but the other way around) in November. Thanks for this Video Phill. Love your content.
film that so people can see it.
@@SamSitar I will, most likely.
Rail or road, it's always a relaxing and peaceful ride through the beautiful Southern Highlands. The annual Tulip festival in Bowral is a must see.
tbh by road sucks i get carsick :|

First time on an Xplorer? Wow I didn't think that at all. I thought you already went on an Xplorer, at least after you started Sydney Trains Vlogs.

Good one I think there is track because of the conversion of T3 Bankstown line to metro

How long is the rail journey from Sydney to Canberra? Time wise, I mean. 🙂
amtrak has done trackwork before. for a time, buses replace midday trains on the hartford line.
