They’re pretty similar in level. The biggest difference is how good tactically McDonald is. There are so many times he predicted the other guy’s move and got to the ball early to take back control and then there were times where the other guy was just scrambling and had no idea where McDonald was going. Mac really made a good player look like a chump
Michael Taylor that observation doesn’t innately mean Jackie technique is (was) better, they hit the ball differently because they have different goals in mind. Fawcett ‘muscling’ the ball is intentional because he wants more power in his strokes, and he consistently hit harder than his opponent, if only slightly. Could he be more energy efficient? Yeah. But that’s not his primary intent, so having a form that fits that purpose wouldn’t make sense.
@@juliansanderson839 if you play tennis then you'll realise that you don't get more power by muscling or forcing the ball and brushing up the back of it like Fawcett, you get it through timing, technique and hitting the ball out in front (think Federer). I think you'll find that MacDonald is able to hit way harder than Fawcett when he really unleashes on that forehand of his. It's also how he's able to compete against top players like Dimitrov and Murray (do a search for highlights of these games). Fawcett would be blown off the court love and love against these guys.
Michael Taylor fair point, having a fluid effortless swing is ONE way to hit with power, but not the only way. Most pros go with the smooth option bc they are playing tennis for 10+ hours a day and it’s beneficial for stamina. But it’s not the only way to get power. For comparison, look at Del Potro or Kyrgios (an example of an unorthodox forehand, not muscle forehand) I don’t doubt that in this match Mackey could hit the hardest forehand, I just believe and saw that consistently, Fawcett was hitting harder on that side thanks to his intentional stiff power generation. I think of it like the Bruce Lee method vs the mike tyson: one gets power through fluidity, the other through rigidness
@@juliansanderson839 because he's stiff power from the opponent doesn't effect him as much. Don't think it's necessary at all for how strong he probably is
I play tennis and my coach has told me that a one hand backhand is more easy to make shots, but having a 2 hand backhand helps you get better footwork because you cant extend one of your arms that long and habe to get to the ball quicker and precisely, but for me, a one hand backhand it has like more style or something like that
lol I think it just looks really low because most places don't have singles sticks anymore. so the higher points on the ends are closer to the middle and it looks like it shortens the net length
I mean, here is what I see 1) look at Tom's positioning when Mackie hits the drop shots 2) You would be expecting an aggressive shot and not a drop shot. Throws off Tom and keeps him on his toes.
Ucla guy will get pushed around eventually playing the way he does. Too much immediate closing off his hips/shoulders on forehand forcing him to then flail them back open.
2:04 World class
Mackie's court coverage is phenomenal. Guy's not even winded after those points.
And just two years later and he is in the ATP top 100
Batman no shit but top 100 is still a big achievement
Batman id like to see you get a game, heck even a point off him.
@John Wick omg he is so bad. He can't beat federer
John Wick idiot
Fuck that’s impressive
haha love all the dropshots mackie does. Play smarter, not harder
+richard yan Fuck you
he reminds me of nishikori
Andrew I think you have an addiction.... You should talk to somebody about this before it's too late.
Jeffrey must've shafted you too hard in that 6-3 for your smarts to be of any use richard
Usc needs to raise tuition so they can import better players
Mackie clearly had a game plan going on like he usually does during each point and executed them great this match.

Technically MacDonald is way ahead. His hitting is effortless, where as Fawcett is muscling the ball of the time.

Amazing points. I miss watching good college tennis.
Mackie is so insanely good😂
Mackenzie plays very similar to Kei, he has identical FH disguise drop-shop like Kei.
Also in his movement they look so identical!
his forehand looks more like monfils tbh
@@RealCraftIV u have no eyes then... absolutely different styles wtf u talking about
Mastur Binho no it doesn’t. Edit: yeah it does.
@@commondirtbagz7130 Edit: Wtf, does it really after all lol
First time I've seen him play. Love his game especially the drop shots.
Dam good match. Bro has the drop shots on lock
Mackie has a great game. Love his dropshots. He has great court IQ too.
3 years later and Mackie's fh drop shots are still a clinic.
Fawcett makes his racquet look like a toothpick
4:35 court to the left lol
Haha
Mackie and his drop shots .... too good :)
dumbest code for racquet abuse I've ever seen at 4:32. I mean just tell the guy to watch it he did no damage and just bounced his damn racquet
lol true
could damage the ground
They teach 'em young.
Tom needs to go to the Steffi Graff School of Foot Work.
I think he's just like that... not so elegant but quite effective.. only lack of technique a little
He's very clumsy and stiff in his movement which effects his footwork and footspeed. but that's usually a problem only for the taller players.
Rymd Cpz Also big. Should probably drop some weight to move faster as well
Damn Fawcett hits hard af
+J10S what was the score
does his racket hiss ?
Nifty Nea actually yes that sound means he’s hitting the ball close to perfectly placed in the center of his strings
Amazing tennis! Very entertaining rallies.
Coming back to this video after he beat Rafa in the Australian Open for nostalgia lol
One of the few college players these day can make million dollars playing tennis.
5:35 tf out?
That shit was definitely out. There's a ton of bad calls in college tennis that wasn't one
Secs See ok so I wasn’t the only one to see it out
Secs See if you play back in slow motion it’s definitely out
3:16 let’s go Mikey! If anyone has seen the video this guy was in before you’ll understand lol
Tom’s footwork reminds me of a baby giraffe
Is this a compliment, roast, or observation?😂
That ball is in @ 5:34
is mackie really 5'10? I looked up his atp profile after this vid and he seems shorter than that
Probs bc most tennis players are taller
They dont exaggerate height like hollywood tho if it say 5’10 for his athletic profile he def is 5’10
I think Brandon vs mackie would be a great match
Tommy Wiseau Brandon would be lucky to get the number of letters in his first game.
Whoops, that was a dumb typo
No I am not changing this user name 17 what does that even mean
Tommy Wiseau letters*
No I am not changing this user name 17 you realise Mackie isn’t as good as people make him out to be. He’s good don’t get me wrong but just overrated
@@tommywiseau9659 top 100 and overrated? Lol
How tall is McDonald?
bout 5 feet 10 inches
5'4'' in high heels and wearing a hat.
Which racquets are those ??
Prashant Barjati both use Wilson blades
@@ohniichan8148 thanks for telling 👍
Does Macdonald has a ranking?
My Tennis Online he’s top 200 rn
77th going very well :)
is there any player in this league with one handed backhand?

@@daniellopezlopez2114 lol not being able to extend your arm hold you back, though it may help when trying to learn better footwork
jesus christ how low is that net
lol I think it just looks really low because most places don't have singles sticks anymore. so the higher points on the ends are closer to the middle and it looks like it shortens the net length
Which camera you used to record this? Is it 30 or 60 FPS?
0:59 what a volley
Awesome videos man!
Dayum, how huge is that Stanford player? Looks like a linebacker...
Mackie is a beast.
That dropshot is just so nasty.
fun contrast of styles
Such a clean serve action from the blue shirt player....
Ucla guy has tennis intelligence
I don't understand why he has to be a mile away from the baseline?
Top quality play
MacDonald wearing miss-match shoes?
+DJ METALLIX I think it's his "thing". I watched him play against USC in the beginning of the season and he has mixed matched shoes as well
Kristin Shiuey Lol
pretty effective in distracting the opponent
Asymmetrical sport 🤷♂️
Do you think Serena could beat either one of these guys? Even on her best day and their average day they would beat her most likely O and O.
John McEnroe, is that you?
Serena wouldn't stand a chance

Nice video
Very beautiful american tennis
Does anyone notice that this guy has one white and one black shoe on ?
damn interesting; thanks!
nice
wohoo... Mackie still plays for UCLA? Is that still relevant now he's ATP level?
Dude the video is 2 years old
Keep getting annoyed by the woman at 2:10
the guy in the blue always looks like he's gonna slip
Mackie has 2 different colored pair of shoes on. lol
low net.
80% of the shots wont make it with a regular net
low what xD ?
The middle net are pretty low but those drop shot are not in the middle of the net so...
They measure the net before every college match
I've never seen someone drop shot so much, when they should be offensively approaching, as this mackie guy.
I mean, here is what I see
1) look at Tom's positioning when Mackie hits the drop shots
2) You would be expecting an aggressive shot and not a drop shot. Throws off Tom and keeps him on his toes.
Yea he just won a division 1 match using those tactics. Until you're close to as good as him, sit the fuck down
+Josh Carter Are you referring to me or Sleeping Lion?
+Josh Carter shut the fuck up. If I was still in my prime, I would mop the floor with him.
+Josh Carter drop shots are for pussies
Ucla guy will get pushed around eventually playing the way he does. Too much immediate closing off his hips/shoulders on forehand forcing him to then flail them back open.
A. David Imperial watch him now
he is a pro player
thats why he played us open and wimbeldon right
TH-cam tennis pros know everything!! LMAO
Beat Milos raonic
4:35 court to the left lol
