Ha!!! New Jersey "can get something for nothing" from Montreal? Ya mean like they already did with Kovasevic, who has been their most reliable d-man this season? 🙄
IMO the veteran D are needed and trading them would weaken the defense. Hutson, who has a lot of talent, turns the puck over too often. Also trading Savard would leave the team with one RHD. Trading Kovacevic was a mistake. He paired well with whoever his D partner was. Dvorak can at least play the PK. However, I do believe he's UFA season end. Evans is a must to resign. Role players like Armia, Anderson, Galagher are needed. Heineman could possibly play 2nd line. I'd love to see Dach and Newhook traded but I don't think any teams would want Dach. Need a 2nd line center to play with Laine and Demidov next season.
problem with Savard is that if he doesn't want to resign then we have to trade him or lose him for nothing. Definitely should have kept Kovecevic, but its too late for that.
@@switchgear100 I don't know that he doesn't want to resign, all that's reported is that there are no contract talks between the parties. I agree if Montreal doesn't plan on resigning him it's best to trade and receive something in return. That goes for any player on an expiring contract. I've liked the Savard - Xhekaj pairing.
I'm pretty certain there is a lot of demand for Savard for other teams considering his previous playoff experience. Think he will be the defenseman teams will go after like Tanev last season for the playoffs.
If anything we should be more worried about Laine taking over Caufields spot on the PP. I dont want cole to go cold and lose his confidence on his shooting
@oasisbeyond so demote him to the 2nd pp? For what? He doesn't deserve it. And it will be a huge knock to his confidence to play him on such a bad line. If thats the case they should bring down Suzuki as well. So it evens it out
If we're going to trade anyone to NJ or anywhere else, the two players I'd put at the very top of the list to move would be Dach and Newhook. Not Armia, not Evans, not Matheson, not Savard, not Anderson, not even Dvorak. At least each of those guys contribute *something*! Here's what Dach and Newhook contribute: Dach = 32 games, 9 points, and *MINUS 23* Newhook = 32 games, 6 points, and minus 13. No way the Habs are taking even the smallest step forward with these guys occupying key spots in our lineup. They're BRUTAL. Can't create offense, (even with prime opportunities constantly handed to them on the PP), and they're defensive liabilities. The trades to acquire them, for Romanov and 1st, 2nd, & 3rd rd picks amounts to two of the worst trades in the entire NHL in the past five years. Add the Lehkonen and Kovasevic trades, and anyone who thinks Hughes is somehow a master trade architect is just fooling themselves.
3 things after todays game vs Detroit 1) I wish Cole shot more he looks for the passes and I swear they are so forced. Ik he knows he can shoot and they need him to shoot more. 2) DAMN OUR 4th Line is great 3) we need to somehow teach slaf and dach how to use their size to be effective (they need to learn how to be able to crash the net from every angle with the puck) why u ask its so that they can lure defenders to them. right now as soon as they get a defender on them they become useless to the play so they go and screen the trendy now imagine if they could play the 1 on 1 and bring another dman to em, it opens up so many possibilities that the goalie now has to worry about and that would help point 1 of making Cole and laine get more shots 5 on 5 hope this makes sense
Montreal will likely draft next summer a center (Frondell /Desnoyers) but it is still very possible they go for needs again, and take a right defenseman (Hensler). They can use Evans (...if they resign him) as a 3rd center or use Beck and Kapanen next season. They can also use Newhook or Dach. It takes time to get depth in a rebuilding team ???
Every GM knows Matheson well since he has been in the NHL since 2015. The guy has already been traded twice. Even if Matheson got a career season last year, it would take quite a bit more than just a Matheson to get you a good 2C. This is why that most teams draft, develop and keep them...unless a team is willing to overpay to get one via trade. Anyhow, Montreal would not let Matheson go because he remains their best experienced defenseman for the time being !!!
Savard might be traded, but not until we are closer to the deadline. With 50 games still to play and the Habs sitting only 7 pts out of a wildcard spot and the addition of Carrier to bolster our D it is not impossible to get "back in the mix" Besides, I want him to teach Xhekaj as much as possible before getting traded. The difference in Wifi's play since being paired with Savard is huge.
your absolutely crazy. hes just 20 and you see him have the odd end to end rush.. His last goal the other night banking it in off Levy from behind the net shows his skill. He will be a top NHL power forward by 25. Dont think with emotions
@Gazza.Ctr33 yeah so? He will turn 21 soon. Please watch his playstyle. It doenst make any sense that a 6.3feet power forward be that lazy and not find his game yet. Or footing. He picked up his bad habits from year 1 again. Like seriously this kid is regressing at a alarming rate. And if you people let it slide to much. This guy will be the next Anderson or elias Lindholm or Engvall (big bad contracts that will hamstring mtl) that money could have gone to Hutson or demidov. Who are much deservant this slafbustsky

what if Edmonton can't afford to sign Evan Bouchard ?Habs could trade Matheson and Savard. Then they could play everyone on the correct side ice.Plus Bouchard in montreal would be better than Matheson and Savard.

this is the dumbest comment yet. Savard is UFA and is not talking with the team or even saying "I won't talk until the season is over". If he doesn't want to resign you have to trade him regardless of if it hurts the team this year. There is no reason to retain him for the last part of the season if he won't resign beyond this year. Trading him is the only option.
Personally, I would not trade Matheson or Savard, assuming they want to play in Montreal. If the team gets better and more solid over the next two years, which is what we all expect and hope for, those guys will be great assets to a playoff team. But probably more importantly, you cannot just trade or send away most of the players and think that it will not affect other players. You send out very bad messages and signals when you constantly trade the core of your players. Matheson will look a lot better in a more successful team. He's a good attacking player and he's not that bad defensively, at least not worse than others. My strategy: keep most of these guys and have two more impact players. In a better team, everyone will look better and produce more than expected. Stop this frenzy of trade scenarios that make no sense.
