  • My Summer road trip didn't entirely go to plan... About 400 miles from home my Serpentine belt turned to a ball of threads, and took out the PAS (Power Assisted Steering) Pump and the Alternator... This video covers the repair - entirely done with a basic emergency toolkit on a domestic driveway!
    Lots of tips and tricks that are worth having in your back pocket... you never know when this could happen to you!
    Hat tip to ‪@ichinichisan‬ for finding the relisted ratchet mentioned at 27.13 - grab one while you can!

    In the USA here, very thorough and well explained. I found the info I needed in the first 2 min but watched untill the end as it was an easy to watch video without the usual, look at my cat or dog messing around stuff you find in many you tube shots. Strait, too the point and no unnecessary commentary. Very much appreciated! Ignore the Grammer please I'm on my phone and in the car lol.

    27:13 The ratchet didn't make it into the description, but it appears to be the AB Tools-Toolzone 3/8" Drive Extendable + Flexible Ratchet Socket Driver 72 Teeth Quick Release. Found it on Amazon, and the handle looks the same.
    Thanks for the informative video.

      That’s the one! Thank you so much for finding that - it had dropped off Amazon for a while so I killed the original link, but I’ll stick it back in! Cheers

    Had to change the PAS pump on my S80 and found the new was 10mm lager pulley diameter than old. My existing belt was 1825mm long so got a 1838mm one which meant the tensioner is not almost ‘maxed out’ and far easier to fit as you’ve got 13mm more to play with. Since also changed Alternator and found your tip about the Air Con bolts to be loosened helpful.

      Good stuff! I didn’t have the option of a longer belt due to limited aftermarket suppliers so had to make do with the cable tie trick… the belts do stretch marginally during their service life, so keep an eye on that tensioner being at its other extreme and the belt slipping in a few years (or if it gets wet) but you should be fine! Thanks for watching and glad it was helpful!

    Good job mate. Those belts can be a bit confusing but you got it. 👌👍🚙

      Cheers! Not a job I'd repeat too many times in the rain, but a decent outcome given the challenges! 😊

    hi i had the same thing happen too, was the crank pully the outer ring came away from the rubber middle ring.

    • @bigtalltim
      @bigtalltim  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      YES! - Exactly that happened to me with my S60! The crank pully has a rubber damper built in between the metal drive centre and the outer that carries the belt; it is quite common for them to slide off the centre which drops the belt - especially if there has been an oil leak from the rockerbox cover or crank head (both pretty common)

    Excuse my ignorance but does this also drive the camshaft and do you need to ensure it is aligned to timings marks etc.?

    • @bigtalltim
      @bigtalltim  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not ignorant at all! Bottom line, no. This belt doesn't drive the cam shaft.... but it IS driven in the same way as the belt that does. The timing belt is the one inside the black cover I removed towards the end, and that would definitely require timing to be carefully maintained - if that one snaps, it is usually game over for the engine! This one is more like the good old fan belt - like the timing belt it is driven by a big pulley on the end of the crank, but this one goes on to power the alternator, power steering pump and air con compressor rather than the camshafts. BTT

      Thanks for the reply, really enjoying the simple instructions for all of your videos. Does the Volvo 70 have the same engine? I'm thinking of getting one - any advice on engines / P2/P3? @@bigtalltim

      My pleasure! My recommendation is any of the d5 diesels on the p2 platform for ease of maintenance - I’ve had an S60, V70 and XC90 personally… all superb! Thanks for watching!😊

      Lol - yes… and anyone who doesn’t should! Ironically, I think I picked those up second hand from Dave Sterl - another really solid recommendation!
