      One of the grab students at Nicholls is looking at the diets of Red Knots using DNA barcoding so that will be interesting!

    From S. Ontario, Canada, here. I've heard about the red knots and how not only are their numbers dwindling, but they're arriving in the tundra up here in Canada underweight. One reason I heard is the over harvesting of horseshoe crabs. I hope the work you participated in helps. Thanks for this video and for what you do to make us aware of what's happening in the bird world. And not just birds but the habitats and land, water, etc. Because it's all connected. Ecology was a fairly new thing when I was in my preteens and the book "Silent Spring" came out. They had just learned about DDT then. Wow. Thanks for the videos and your channel.

    It was a lot of fun seeing red knots at Cape May a few years ago. We encountered lots of banded birds and were able to look up where they had been.

      @@BadgerlandBirding Most had been banded in New Jersey/Delaware but some were banded in South Carolina and Massachusetts. One was resighted in Brazil, a couple at James Bay, and several in the Mingan Archipelago.

    How exciting! I have a lot of ethical concerns about banding. I think there should be international regulations on standardization to prevent the need for multiple bands, and laws regarding banding size/location. There’s a mute swan at a local park that can always be seen picking at her huge neck band in absolute misery, year after year. I really appreciate the science, I just hate seeing multiple or huge bands on birds.

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The swan bands sure do seem bulky! I wonder if someone could be contacted to remove or adjust the band on the one at the park. The shorebirds I’ve seen with multiple bands don’t seem to be bothered by them. I think it also depends on how good of a banded does the work. A property attached band shouldn’t cause any problems, but one that’s put on wrong can become a hindrance.

      I have this same dislike of the banding, does it interfere in the daily life of the animal that it is placed on we really have no to know but putting something on the neck of a swan just seems so wrong.

    I had 4 band reports last year on the Delaware Bay. Two were from NJ, one from Quebec and one that no one knew about but likely either Peru or somewhere in S. America
