Highlights as France's Camille Muffat breaks the Olympic record and wins Gold in the Women's 400m Freestyle during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Her freestyle stroke was incredibly effortless and beautiful. It's sad because on that one summer evening in 2012, Camille Muffat brought joy and admiration not only to the nation of France but everyone who appreciate both the sport of swimming and the Olympics.
It's just unbelievable. Just an amazing swimmer, a sweet person and all France is crying now. First the writers now the swimmers it's just awful.

Camille was snatched from us way too early. This was exceptional, and it's so unfair to think that only 4 years have gone by and she is no longer with us. I hope Muffat is being rewarded somewhere for her many efforts.

Camille c'est toujours très difficile de te revoir aux jeux olympiques de Londres j ' étais dans les tribunes pour t ' encourager et après le podium j ' ai pu passer un moment avec toi mon amie un moment que je n oublierai jamais comme tout les moments que nous avons eu la chance de pouvoir passer ensemble toutes les 2 je ne t ' oublierai jamais tu es et restera pour toujours dans mon ❤ et dans ma mémoire . ❤ Camille ❤

well... i do agree that the french will have an even greater olympics in swimming in Rio 2016. Though you never know WHO is going to come back as the best from the USA. 4 years ago? No one knew about Missy, she's gonna do great in 3 years time :3

Congratulations , Muffat! The time is impesionant: 4.01.45 ,OR. I think that the best long-swimmers at the moment are Katie Ledecky , Mireia Belmonte and Lotte Friss and for things like this Muffat it deserves to be in this group.
