There's a reason why he sees Amaterasu as a "fair maiden".... because, from what I believe, her true form is actually that of a woman if I remember correctly.
What's funny is that the only debate as to Amaterasu's gender in the game is whether the wolf body is male or female and there's not much even then. No one doubts that Amaterasu-Oomikami is a woman.
The god possessing the wolf form is female (Amaterasu), but the wolf she is inhabiting is most likely male (I don't remember the name of the wolf from the legend). She's a god, so it probably doesn't matter to her.
I know it's a few months later but.. I am replying anyway. I wish it was it was that innocent. this is something I don't think chuggaa even knew, if he did he was sparing everyones innocence. there are eight of the power orbs in this game and they belong to the dogs that belong to a princess. There is a Japanese mytholohical story where there were eight crystal beads/balls, I don't remember what exactly they were referred to as, so I'll just say Crystal balls. The crystal balls were created when a princess had sex with her father's dog... Yeah let all that sink and realize that the power orbs are those crystal balls. These crystal are also what the Dragon balls from Dragon Ball are based on, I learned about the Dragon Ball connection from a top 10 things you didn't know about Dragon Ball video by dorkly. The.connection to this game and that myth are pretty obvious. one last thing, I hope Chuggaa sees this even though this LP has been over for a long time.
@@OnyxLink I mean, I own 4 dogs myself and one of my males pees like a girl and squats down and my female lifts her leg up, not like a boy but lifts it slightly
Ammy was always a female. Even 100 years prior to this game, Shiranui was just what the people called her. And they originally thought she was a guy. She was always Amaterasu
cjcduck g I don't think Ammy was also Shiranui from 100 years ago. According to Okamiden (spoiler alert), when Chibi frees Shiranui from the ice and they split paths, Issun's father (I believe he's the father, if not, the uncle) asks who Chibi is. Issun's father reacts saying something like "Your grandson!?" The prefix "grand-" and the (I believe) canon fact that Ammy is Chibi's mother says that Ammy and Shiranui are not the same person.
Thanks to this particular instance of "Henshin (transformation) a go go, baby!", I know to get excited when transformation sequences happen. The "dog-gone annoying" quest is finished, but there's no time to rest (in a comfy dog bed). History is going to repeat itself at the moon cave, and you don't want to miss it.

WHY ARE FANS DEBATING AMATERATSU'S GENDER? IT SAYS IN THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL THAT SHE IS DELIBERATLY REFERRED TO IN GENDER-NEUTRAL TERMS BUT IS FEMALE IN MYTHOLOGY!
Guys in the comments, don't use Ōkamiden as evidence of anything, the game is VERY poorly translated, and made by a different person, so it isn't technically canon. There is little continuity between this game and the sequel.
Have you even PLAYED Okamiden?! Of course its Cannon to Okami as it takes place NINE MONTHS AFTER OKAMI. I'm sorry but your comments reeks of stupidity...
***** Actually, I was referring to the fact that in Okami, Shiranui is Ammy from the past, in Okamiden, Shiranui is Ammy's father. There are a lot of other continuity errors, and the Japanese version apparently made more sense. I meant that it contradicts this games canon in several places, as the original, I see this game as more canon.
The last blockhead in the game is really bullshit, I had to record the screen with my phone just to get past it. And even then it took two tries, because I was a bit too inaccurate. Luckily it's optional.
No, Amaterasu is distinctly female in Shinto religion and had never had a gender change. Shintoism does have a few gender ambiguous gods like Tsukuyomi and Inari, and I believe there is one who's both, and there's several that are neither, but Amaterasu is and always has been female.
Holy crap! You killed that Blockhead in one try! I always have trouble with the Blockheads. Just last night, I had to get my brother to help me using tape to figure out the dot grids.
From what I know, in the instruction manual of Okami, it says Amaterasu is genderless, while in the game Amaterasu is perceived, or thought by in-game characters as a female.
In the finnish guidebook there is a part at the back that explains many of the references to japanese mythology and culture, and it even mentions that Ammy is genderless in this game but in japanese lore she is a female. :o!
I think I read somewhere that in the Japanese and European versions of Okami, Amatarasu is referred to as a female but it is left ambiguous in the American version (well, apart from the "mother to us all" line). And I know, the Amatarasu from Japanese mythology *is* depicted as female.
I love that Kushi picture/shrine XP Also, not sure if you know this (I bet you do), but if you go back up to the spring where you got the water for Kushi and go up the long path to Shinshu, you can meet her again. Issun has some pretty funny comments with her, too. How she got the water up there, I will never know. She's one strong lady.
I like to think that even though Amaterasu is a reincarnation of Shiranui, they are separate wolves. They could potentially share the same spirit, but they're are different at the same time. Just because someone dies and supposedly reincarnates as another person doesn't mean they are the exact same person. They're completely different, and I personally think that's the case here.
@ 4:19 Issun's comparing the Canine Warrior waiting around to a statue he saw somewhere. Now he might just mean the statue of Shiranui, but it might also be a reference to Hachikō, an Akita dog famous in Japan for being very loyal to his owner. There's been a few statues made in his honor.
I went on wallpapers app for iPad and went on "popular" and the first thing I was shown was a picture of Amatherasu with "Chuggaaconroy" written at the top. Nice to know people have their priorities straight.:D
I had someone ask me today who the best Let's Play commentator is on TH-cam. I immediately said Chuggaaconroy and it felt good that I hardly had to think about that :3
My orbs did that in my game. The first time I played it, I had a terrible glitch for like ten minutes (and it extended into the cut scenes), where Ammy's head would disappear, and its place several long lines of white slashed across my screen. I was frightened for a while, but she returned to normal when I entered a new area.
I've found stuff that says that the 8 Power Orbs are supposed to be part of the Stray Bead item (trying the avoid spoilers), making a total of 108 instead of 100. However, it got scrapped in the final version.
For those who haven't gotten it yet, you can get a move where Ammy can relieve herself on opponents like the Canine Warriors. The God Technique Golden Fury (Ha!) costs 100,000 yen at the dojo in Shinshu Field. When it hits minor enemies and some mini bosses, it actually forces them to drop an additional demon fang besides the one for the floral finisher. P.S. @GameCat16: Your theory is the most likely, but I kinda hoped for female goddess, female wolf form, which would have made Ammy...
Actually Shiranui was Amaterasu's previous incarnation, though technically Shiranui wasn't its actual name as the legend states that the villagers began calling it that. Plus Wakka later in this game says that Amaterasu waited for Nagi to be born before going to fight Orochi. Chibiterasu is the one with more debate about it as no-one knows if it is Amaterasu's child, or Reincarnation.

Technically no, in the game you never see a human form of Ammy the only form change is at the end when she's at full power. However when you meet the dead priest he does mention that he sees her as a maiden of some sort. All human forms of her are fan made
