The hope, that no matter how hard things get, there is light in the darkness, especially if we have friends who won't abandon us no matter what. If it makes you feel better about Ness's achievement, consider that without his power they may have died before Paula could muster enough prayers to defeat Giygas, so it's not like Ness's effort was pointless.
I know I'm responding to a super old post, but I felt inclined to respond. I really felt like that statement had quite a bit of truth to it. It seems that, but not always, that we create our own demons. It sounds a bit cringey honestly... but say for example that you were addicted to drugs or that you're stuck in an abusive relationship. There is only one person that can save you--- yourself.

I just beat this game like a month ago (currently playing through Mother 3) and looking back, this was easily my favorite part. This moment was quite possibly the most emotional thing I have ever experienced in a video game. "Instantly, Ness's mind cleared and he realized that he had possessed great power! At that moment, Ness's psychic powers radically expanded!" reading that for the first time legit brought a tear to my eye. You went into the darkest depths of your own self and destroyed it. You face your own evil thoughts and intentions and you conquer them. And by doing that, you free your mind and realize the true power that was inside you the entire time. it still blows my mind how profound this series can get and I wish games still did stuff like this. it really makes you draw a personal connection to the main character.
I see it like this: This is all a test to determine whether Ness is the Chosen One or not. After going through Hell storing the Eight Melodies in the Sound Stone, the first test is complete. The second test is when the holder of the artifact (i.e. Ness) is transported to Magicant, the inner mechanisms of his mind, and if he manages to conquer the land and defeat his Nightmare (meaning he rids himself of any malice, prejudice, etc. in his mind), Ness becomes pure, and the Sound Stone deems him worthy of obtaining *the power* of the melodies, giving him unbelievable power that exceeds the combined strength of the other 3 members of his team. This is how he is declared as the *one* spoken of in the prophecy.
i love how when ness defeats his nightmare, he gains total control over his mind and fully unlocks his psychic power. it's almost as if he lets go of all his worry and doubt he has about facing giygas and realizes he's capable of defeating him.
Before you start this fight, be sure you have the Night Pendant, Star Pendant or Sea Pendant equipped, as they protect you from PK Flash, making you immune to it, and trust me, you will need it as some enemies in this area, including Ness Nightmare can cast PK Flash (Glorious light has the effect of PK Flash) it can cast you some status like make you cry, make you numb, confused, and even make you a 1 hit KO. DO NOT equip the Earth Pendant, it does not make you completely immune to PK Flash!
When I first fight this thing he uses glorious light and instantly kills me like without draining my hp bar its just kill me within no seconds.....but I had full health
You have to equip a Night Pendant or a Sea Pendant before Ness goes to Magicant. This makes you immune to Flash (at least the Sea one does), so that attack (Flash Omega) does nothing.
I did this fight with the earth pendant, which only has a 50% chance to stop PSI Flash, cause I sold my nightmare pendant at the magicant shop thinking I wouldn't need it anymore lol
Bruh I just pressed auto fight after dying to this thing 5 times, and I actually finally won from doing so. Everyone says the 8th sanctuary guardian is the hardest , but nah nightmare is definitely the worst. I got so stressed from this lol, the 200,000 exp was nice tho.
psi rockin omega scared the shit out of me when i saw it someone said this before but this fight would literally be impossible without the rolling hp counter

In Mother 3, I think its a reference to how Porky manipulated Claus. This is reinforce by the fact that the background is different in the Masked Man's first fight, but Mani-Mani in the second as before the second we find out MM's true identity.
It would’ve been a lot cooler if they called Ness’ Nightmare “Ness’ Shadow” since the boss kind of repeats the attacks the player does and a shadow is pretty much a reflection of something.
i did this part for so looong. i couldn't beat it because i didn't have the earth/night pendant, so i got killed over and over. i tried levelling up but i still couldn't beat it, until i got super lucky someday and survived til it's PP was drained. people say it brought tears to their eyes at this part, but i was just too busy celebrating to notice he levelled up xD
This is the true final challenge in my opinion. Giygas, with a good strategy, the powers of your friends, and Ness's broken level ups makes the fight almost a pushover. Here, you resort to only the skills that you have, which are limited. I died to this MF way more that Giygas (spoiler: I didn't die yo Giygas 😆)
If you want a concrete way to consistently beat the fight literally do nothing but spam attacks and heal whenever your health scrolls below 150 thats what i learned works for me
edit: I FINALLY BEAT IT i was soft locked here since my speed stat was not high enough, so i could never land any hits to him without PP. and i don’t feel like starting over either, and i don’t have any save states outside of magicant. if any of y’all can help me on this, i would be happy to hear.
It's pretty hard if you don't spam PSI Flash omega like some did. Having a boss that can instantly do enough damage to roll your counter to 0 is dangerous as hell.
All enemies in earthbound are easy to beat once you develop a strategy to beat theirs. However if you aren't prepared ei. the first time you face them, you will most likely lose on the first go around. For the nightmare, if you aren't prepared ei. You have dragonite, are super high leveled and have the proper acc to protect you from flash, you will lose so bad you will he left wondering how the heck did I get beat in 3 turns so easily. The only enemies that you can't prepare for other then leveling up and have attacks that you can't defend against such as the kraken and his twister or thunder and storms combination attacks. For those the only strategy I can offer is be ready to use life up omega because once they unleash those attacks you are in deep doo-doo
Yes. He's all alone, Ape Inc. doesn't bother item stacking so my inventory is a bit limited, and the path to get there is full of tough monsters. I've resorted to doing a lot of waiting for enemy sprites to disappear, so I can have a Bird Man tag along, and so my hp and pp won't be shot. Those damn krakens are relentless. Haha!
Night pendant is better bc it can block pk flash completely, and ness's nightmare usually use pk flash so it's better having night pendant. And I have no idea what is earth pendant

JustA_Guy Yeah, even though he's the main character, Ness doesn't learn a ton of good PSI moves. Aside from the unique PSI _(favorite thing,)_ his PSI Skill set just covers the basics.

The glorious light is the same as PSI Flash Ω, which has a 40% chance of insta-killing without even draining your HP

The whole massive stat boost cutscene was one of my favorite parts of this game. As Ness became even more powerful, I felt even more powerful too.

I beat this guy first try through pure dumb luck I just kept mashing attack hoping I would get a crit and I got 2 which completely saved me 😭
When I heal up, I wait until my health is maxed out, but that’s just me.

Farmed to level 80 for PSI rocking Omega and blast him with that, took 4 turns, died like 10 times
