    I often see people saying that "2 piece ammunition makes the loading process slower". Somebody forgot to tell this to the loader on this video. This lad is doing a fantastic job

    • @TheCalyWagAssignment
      @TheCalyWagAssignment 5 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      The 2 piece ammo is actually faster ... Challenger 2 is rated around 12 rounds a minute whilst others like Leopard and Abrams have about 10 rounds a minute. It obviously depends on the loader/operator but the challenger 2 stores the ammo in bins around the turret whilst the Abrams and leopard 2 store them in the back of the turret behind armoured doors that have to be open and closed after ever round. With 2 piece you also don't have an empty shell which gets ejected as it uses up all that is loaded allowing for less fiddling about.

      @@TheCalyWagAssignment I thought the Challenger 2 has 3-piece ammunition. Does it just depend on what kind of round it's firing?

      @@chungusbooper PumpkinLord12 The 3-piece ammunition is set up like this.
      1. Main Projectile
      2. Bag Charge
      3. Vent Tube
      The 3rd piece of ammunition, the Vent Tube, is loaded via a magazine into the breach block meaning that every single round does not require the 3rd piece to be loaded. I believe to my knowledge the Vent Tube is loaded in a 15 round magazine before that would need to be switched, but it may be a 5 round magazine, I'm not too sure but the Vent Tubes are not large. So though that the ammunition is technically 3-piece, for the majority of the time you can class it as a 2-piece and with the 1st piece not really having the propellant, it's safe to lap-load the gun which gives you the 3 second reload. Lap-loading in the US Abrams and I believe the German Leopard is strictly forbidden, as it is deemed too dangerous, but you'll find that in Iraq many Abrams crews were doing it and managed as little as 2 second reloads according to some commanders. Most Challenger tank crews will say to you that they're using 2-piece ammunition, though it's technically 3, you'll not need to worry about the Vent Tube very much in a combat situation as the battle will most likely be over before you need to consider topping it up.

    People who compare the Challenger 2 with tanks like the Abrams and Leopard 2 forget that the latter store their ammo in a separate compartment which has to be opened between each shot in order to reduce the chance of an ammo explosion if the tank is hit. If the Abrams/Leo loader was sitting with the round on his lap like the challenger loader, the loading times would be the similar in my opinion. That fact that there is a difference in loading and storage procedures is the main difference in loading time in this case and not the fact that the challenger uses 2 piece ammunition.

    • @tellyheadlol4258
      @tellyheadlol4258 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @Desoxyri 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tellyheadlol4258 No, there is no issue in laploading one piece ammunition. It has been done since the first tanks and is still being done today. But the loading procedure for the Leo 2 is just different than the challanger. Laploading the Leo 1 took about 2-3 seconds with one piece ammunition. If you lapload, one piece ammunition will usually be faster than two piece. Comparing one piece vs two piece loading times by using the challanger vs leo2 or abrsms is comparing apples an oranges. The difference is in the procedures and the designs of the tanks

      The whole process is thus: Cmdr or gunner spots a target. If cmdr he says "Fin (or Hesh, or Co ax) tank (or whatever target, eg BMP, Men, etc )" The gunner when aligned onto the target replies "On" The loader will prepare to fire the round as stated by the commander. When ready he shouts "loaded". The gunner then reports "firing" and pushes in his firing switch, making the gun go boom or machine gun go ratata. On observation of hitting the target he shouts "Target" after which the commander will say "target go on" or "Target stop" depending on whether he determines the target to be sufficiently pacified. This is firing under direction of the commander. If the gunner has authority to fire he will forgo the steps of the commander and on shouting "fin tank" the loader will immediately reply "loaded" when ready. The commander can also take control of the firing process at any time by saying "fin tank mine" and taking control of the gun himself. Other examples of firing control orders are "Co ax men" - "On" - "loaded" - "Firing" - "Target" - "Target stop" This isn't even going into adjusting fire of hesh and co ax, which I can relay if interested. I'm a crewman on chally, just so you know I'm not making this all up. xD

Now, not to put too fine a point on it old chap, but you do remember that little document called "The Official Secrets Act" that you signed don't you? You know, around the time you joined up. Well, we were just wondering if you'd FORGOTTEN ALL ABOUT IT! I mean, come on, this is RUSSIAN channel for goodness sake. What were you thinking? Next you'll be telling them about the boiling vessel.

      No, the breech closes automatically. That is meant to protect him from the breech's recoil

    M1a2 is faster at loading but in this tank the loader did well

    • @CadetTommy2145
      @CadetTommy2145 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It’s slower on the Abrams, roughly 6-7 seconds due to the ready rack door having to open, that doesn’t have to happen on CR2 due to the ammo being stored in armoured bins in the tank’s hull
