You are so right! My grandmother was a widow and she was on a fixed income but her house was always neat and clean. She was burning lemon and orange peel on the stove. So her house was smelling earthier like fruit or food she was cooking or baking. That’s how I remember her. She was always happy to see us, she was loving and protective of me. ❤😢

Yes. We had friends visit after 8 years. Our guest bedroom is comprised of an armoire that’s decades old, an old phone book table I got at a thrift store and painted white, and a chair we took from the house we lived in for 37 years. I did splurge on a new duvet. The lumpy one really had seen better days. Got a white duvet set in the clearance section for $22. Queen size!!!
I bought a nice round basket and white towels at Homegoods and filled an empty corner, putting the rest of the new towels in the bathroom which has recently been painted white. Put a bath mat and rug mat over the end of the tub, hung photographs I had taken, added some nice sample size bottles of body wash, etc, that I purchased. The two spaces looked so nice. I also slightly rearranged the adjoining loft space,, which cost me nothing, but improved the flow of the not too large area. They had the perfect “suite” for their visit.

I like a house to look lived in. To me, that makes a house a home. My sister in law was not house proud and when we went to see her, my nephew would run in with dirty knees and smudges on his face, the dog would be running around and the cat sitting in the corner. There was so much love in that house. So much in fact that it extended to the old lady up the road (who used to care for the children while the parents were at work). Her family didn't bother with her anymore so my niece would cook for her and bathe her. My sister in law would take her for hospital appointments. Really, what I am trying to say is that love makes a home. The decor in their house was horrible but the welcome and love was beautiful.

I have a family member , also a sister in law, and it's exact same. Dogs, dirty but SO MUCH LOVE. I've also known some pretty bad characters, I won't say what type of character, who demanded utmost cleanliness and spotlessness. I don't know why the incongruencies, but the love is what really matters.

Growing up my mom grew flowers. When they were in season there were always a bouquet on dining table of our 4 room cozy house. I have a small deck with a patio table, two chairs is crowded but it works for me, I have 7 small pots of irises, daffodils and amaryllis in one corner. The amaryllis will be brought inside in November to bloom in December. In July I bought new towels on sale at Dillard’s. The sale price was much lower than same size of towels at Walmart and of course better quality.

My family always offered a beverage or snack to anyone who stopped in to visit. Even if it was a glass of water or coffee and grapes or cheese/ crackers. I am often at someone’s house 30 min and have to ask for a glass of water. I live in Florida so dehydration is real. I think like other niceties it is getting to be a lost art. You are right a warm loving welcome is more important than a fancy house.

Oh Susan, when you were talking about "neat and clean" and immediately thought of my precious Mom. She was a child of the depression, from a large family, but they understood the importance of being neat and clean. She taught me that when you take good care of yourself and your possessions, you're showing your appreciation. She's been gone for many years, but I still try to honor her memory by being neat and clean.

I like to decorate my home like a warm & cozy refuge from the stressful outside world. Antique rose quilt throws & pillows, artificial lovely flower arrangements, twinkle warm lights, burgundy colors that cause a relaxing feeling, scented candles with the scent of hazel nut or vanilla. A free standing black with gold trim gas fireplace with warm flames you can see through the glass door. It's all a reflection to cause a feeling of, yes, this is my refuge & to the ones that enter my home. 💕💕

Awe Susan, you are such an uplifting lady.
I love my home with a monochromatic look of old dark wood and light French chandeliers with studying what I have and can mix with old books, 1800 maps, lithograph of Abraham Lincoln and old letters next to him. My collection is extensive, but I try to rotate to avoid too much clutter. Color is my world and texture with music in the background and light scents. The list is endless…choose things that compliment yet remember to scale art. So much to learn and I’m 62, still making mistakes and practicing. Love to all of you! Everyone woman must make a home.❤

I have always had a home where the rooms were different colors and themed. Once retired I decided to have off-white/light beige walls and bring in color with furnishings and decor. I love it, I now decorate with anything that I love and bring any color or colors into my rooms. I no longer have to pass by something I really like because "it won't match my living room/bedroom/family room, etc".

I have a friend that had themed Rooms in her house. When they built a new house she uses neutral colors on walls and pops of color in blanket, throws, pillows, cushions and such.
I’m in a small apartment with neutral colored walls. I use snowmen, red birds, hearts for January and February, Pastels, Easter and spring colors for March and April. Patriotic colors for May through July, August is Caribbean/ Beach theme, September through November are Fall colors, pumpkins, gourds, pinecones, acorns and other items from the yard. December is Christmas. I store the themed items together in labeled plastic tubs.
In October 2020 I was decorated for Christmas by Halloween… we all know what was happening then. I told my family if I’ve got to stay home I want to enjoy the Christmas lights a little longer.

My parents always had a beverage cart in their living room. They had every type of liquor displayed, some filled in cut crystal decanters.
They weren't drinkers, but the look of this cart was so elegant and inviting. The different colors of the liquor and the beautiful bottles added a richness to the decor. I always thought it was a design necessity. I have a liquor table in my living room and I love looking at it.

I love to decorate more starting with the Fall season. I change all my Wallflower plug ins. I have Fall scents for the bathroom and living room. The kitchen has the pumpkin scents. I love the warmth of the orange shades. I have to change all my pillow covers. I have lots of pillows in the living room and the bedrooms. The Fall sheets went on this weekend. Different throws on the sofa. I have a vase with silk sunflowers & some Fall picks. I have to buy some Fall bouquets from Amazon. The bathroom gets a Bronze shower curtain. It also has some gold & burgundy in it. It’s such a beautiful heavy material. My bathroom is too small to have a vase. I keep saying I’m doing everything when it’s really my girlfriend. Thank God for her. She gets ever out of the closets & decorates around the apartment. If I had new rugs it would really look amazing. If I had someone to move all the furniture it would help. Can’t forget candles. I ordered some this weekend. I don’t have company anymore. It would be too much for me. I can’t get around to take care of guests. We decorate to make ourselves happy. Love you, Lucy

Often I include a small beautiful holiday candle in the room to take with them if its the season. Like you, I want my guests to feel comfortable, welcomed with a personal preference remembered (raspberry spread for their morning toast) and as much thoughtfulness and love I can give. So true Susan. I was scheduled Wed for back surgery. Found out I have a blocked artery. So, Wed I go in for a stent! Anyway, niece coming from 5 hrs away to drive me. I have been running around with my head cut off to make everything perfect! SHE WILL NOT CARE! She does not wear a white glove! SHE JUST WANTS TO BE WITH US. Her nickname is " Sandy Sunshine". Everyone has sunflowers as gifts because she forever smiles & brings joy to others. That is what's important, bringing joy to otheres. And my dear Susan, you do that for me very deeply. Love & Blessings from Fl.

Susan, I’m glad you made another video on how to decorate and look expensive. I think it’s a wonderful idea and you can always do updates and more tips on this subject several times a year in fact. If you’ve got new info about it or ideas, please, show it. Your fans will tune in. I, for one enjoy your content and you’re such a pleasantly soft spoken person who despite the divorce, have no enmity or malice. You’ve thrived instead. Your home is decorated with love and style! I look forward to your posts every week. Half of the time I end up tearful, but you always give so much food for thought.
When I receive guests I always make sure that I add chocolates to the pillows, fresh flowers to the home and the menu is planned ahead to ensure good food and enough time to sit and visit with them. To me what makes a home is that extra thoughtfulness that goes into receiving guests and letting your unique style shine through unashamedly! Yes; this me, but you are most welcome to share my space with me!

I'm always on the look out for some unique plug-in nighlights. It can be difficult for overnight guests to feel safe if/when they need to get up in the night, so along with a mini flashlight in the 'basket' I leave, I try to find beautiful as well as functional nightlights that hopefully add to the decor.

One of the things that makes the house a home to me is having art that our family created. We have very talented, daughters, granddaughters , and sons. We love to display their art as well as art done by my husbands late mom and his late aunts . We also purchase Art at yard sales , thrift stores, and estate sales and always unique pieces and whenever possible original art. So I suppose art in every form, but especially art done by people we love is my most important thing to make our house feel like home .
