  • The wild things roam the Lötschental from Wiler to Kippel. This is a uniquely Swiss, ancient tradition where the men (and now women and children) of the Lötschental dress up as monsters in pelts with hand-carved masks to roam the villages of the valley and scare away winter (or perhaps flirt in an anonymous way!). The Lötschental is one of only a couple German-speaking villages in Wallis/Vallais, which is mostly a French-speaking canton.
There are artisans living in the valley who make these wonderful masks. A whole collection can be seen in the Fasnacht Museum in Kippel.
