Brings back a lot of memories. When I started out with CB in the 70’s I had a license (KSU9734) and everything was 23 channel. I worked in a pawn shop where we sold lots of radios, new & used, Cobra, Robyn, Midland, Tram etc. Fun Times! Thanks for the video.
I like the midland thats an interesting rig. We all started somewhere. I still have and use some older cb equipment still fun to dx with on 11 meters sideband not so much am but still listen to 19 when traveling.

Had fun watching your trip down memory lane .. I still use a President Madison with a 5/8 wave ground plane and a Turner +3. Same as you CB was my gateway into HAM radio.
I still have some of my first ham rigs I got from my Elmer. He set me up with an Azden PCS2000 VHF mobile. This was my first ham rig from back in 93. Still have it.
Yourself and far point farm’s enthusiasm for Cb radio back in the day re lit a spark in me from my childhood in the 70’s !!! I’ve now collected vintage working Cb handhelds and mobiles and two base stations. Thank you so much.
CB radio still a great medium. Have my Cobra 40 channel USB / LSB is in my shack.
Great video! I started playing with a CB as well when I was a youngster. It was funny to see an old VW Beetle with a mag mount on top.
Man that equipment has some character, wow! That brings back memories - I started with CB radio as well. My grandfather had an old Cobra just sitting around on his farm in the junk cabinet (back in the 80's). We brought it home, got a cheap mag mount antenna, hooked up 2 6 volt lantern batteries in series, and got that thing running. Also remember saving up to by a 3 channel Realistic hand held from Radio Shack. Had to buy the crystals separately for that one too!
Cool old rigs. Enjoyed the stories. My first memories of CB are with a 23ch JC Penny Pinto. It was my uncle’s radio and I still have it and it still works.
KM4LDI, I got interested in radio when my father had 1961 Ford Falcon Station Wagon. It had a vacuum tube AM radio in it and he would let me have the keys to go out and listen to the radio. It took a few minutes for the vacuum tubes to warm up. I go out on a warm summer night and tune in AM stations several hundred miles away. I found that fascinating.
Loved this video. I got started with CB in 1972 when I bought a Lafayette HB-525 23 channel mobile unit to install in my car. My friends and I used our CB Radios as our "Cell Phones" back in the early 1970s. As a side note, I met a girlfriend because her mother was a CB'er, and I ended up marrying this girl in 1974 and she is still the love of my life today after 50 years! Long live the CB radio! I will always cherish the CB and how it has changed my life for the better. By the way, I got my Ham license in 1994 and I also credit the CB in nurturing my interest in all things radio communication. Thanks Eric!
I remember the Browning CB. It was in my Grandfather’s 1989 Ford. My cousins and I loved that thing.
As a ham radio operator I love CB radio I have my dad's CB call sign metal plate issued 1976,he had a golden eagle base station chicken choker mic,but we don't have it,but I'll catch ya on the next one.73
I gotta say, I was thinking of just letting my tech license expire in a couple years because of a lot of the older guys that have made it a miserable experience, but guy’s like you and Josh at HRCC give me second thoughts, thanks for sharing.

I started the same way Eric back in 1964. I could talk about those old Elmers, but it goes without saying they changed our lives.
HELLO JUST WANTED TO SHARE, MY FIRST CB RADIO THAT I STILL HAVE IS LAFAYETTE HB 115A ,I BELIVE 1965. I WAS 13 YRS OLD. THE FIRST NIGHT I HAD IT I STAYED UP ALL NIGHT. I HAD A GROUND PLANE ANTENNA TALKING WITH FRIENDS. MY FIRST LONG DISTANCE CONTACT WAS SOME ONE WHO WAS SOUTH OF THE RIO GRAND RIVER.WE LIVED IN LONG ISLAND. WOW I WAS SO EXCITED. REMEMBER BACK IN 1965 LONG DISTANCE PHONE COMMUNICATION WAS VERY EXSPENSIVE AND UNHEARD OF IN MY FAMILY. I HAVE QUITE OF A COLLECTION, PEARCE SIMPSON, ROBYN, COBRA JOHNSON LAFAYETTE PINTO JC PENNY. CB WAS VERY MUCH A PART OF MY LIFE..TO ME ITS LIKE A PIECE OF AMERICAN HISTORY OF WHO WE WERE. COFFEE BREAKS ,I MET A LOT OF PEOPLE ,IT WAS A GREAT TIME AND IAM THANKFUL TO HAVE BEEN A PART OF CB RADIO SINCERLY KJ4VXK

Very kewl old rigs! Brings back a lot of memories to us baby boomers.
SO many hams are ashamed to admit that CB was the first step toward becoming licensed as an amateur.

i still use my LAFEYETTE TELSTATE 140 that I recieved from my Dad in 1977. I remember your radios in use . You would be surprised that many are still in use today.

Thanks for sharing, the 23 channel browning was my first cb radio my uncle buy me with a Star duster antenna in Brooklyn ny I was 13 years old my uncle use to come over the house with his yasue 101 e I was amazed by it I became a ham at age 25 thanks again Eric

Very fun to see. I like seeing the old CB gear. I have a pair of the LLOYD's hand helds in the closet somewhere. Neat look to them.
I got my start in radio on 11 meters. My first base radio was a Realistic Navaho TRC-457. I loved that radio. But soon moved on to ham radio in the early 80s. My first base ham radio was the Yaesu FT-101EE. That Yaesu was a true work horse. Great video Eric, keep them coming. 73 Joe
Started out in the late 60s with a Lafayette HB 600 and an Astro Beam then a Siltronix 1011 B. Moved up to a Yeasu FT 101 and a PDL 2. Great memories. Thanks.

great video! It will be 35 years this spring I first got into 11 meters full time ( hard to believe I was 15 years old!). A neighbor loaned me his Pearice - Simpson Bobcat 23 with 12V P/S and a mag mount antenna. A few years back I found one on Ebay for personal nostalgia. Got my ham tech license in 2011 but CB will always be one of my favs in the radio hobby.
Still have a bunch of CB gear and i do use it to talk with a great group of friends locally. I also had a cobra 350 linear that had 2 Toshiba 2950's in it. My buddy also has a Siltronix 1011D that he uses once in a while on the air.
Great stuff Eric! Got my license in ‘69 and our radio club used to communicate via cb with members who had not yet achieved amateur status. We camped on the Appalachian Trail and had a blast with our CB radios… I miss it…. de Howie WA3MCK
I remember my dad (in the 70's} had a base setup with a 1000 watt kicker(amplifier) with an old time chrome standing mic and we had motorrola cb's in both vehicles. He was a truckdriver.
What a great collection! The Midland base and the 23-channel Brownings are my favorites on the table there. Your video about the hows and whys of CB Radio was instrumental in my learning about the service, and was the first time I had ever heard of a Golden Eagle. I was just sharing with someone the other day on my Wednesday night Ham Net about your handle "Frustration" LOL
I absolutely love old 23-channel CBs with the big dials on them - especially Cobras and Midlands. Those were the radios of my youth, and the Cobra 139 was my holy grail growing up. I finally got one two years ago, fully functional with added channels. I also have several SSB 23-channel radios from Sears, JC Penney, and Realistic. They're like my kryptonite! I got my start with cb radio also AND I still use it! Nothing wrong with cb radio. In fact I just purchased a new president bill 2 with the fm mode! Love it!! Love thatturner plus 2. You ever ever decide to sell that mic drop me a line please!!

i love seeing all the old gear come out and be shown off. you may be slightly older but we got into cb radio at the same time. some of my best fun was had on the radio and still have the same fun. KC1CPA 73
I've got the Browning Golden Eagle that was in my grandparents' house. I like it.
My brother and I were Kings at fox hunting. We both had Diamond 60 trams. Station wagons with 102 in steel whips mounted on the back bumper in the middle. Circling in a parking lot was a big help they were very directional on transmit and receive the direction you were pointed was the direction of the signal you just had to keep a sharp eye on your meador. We put our directions together and headed for the fox. We had four channel Crystal radios from RadioShack We split channeled with them and use transmit for receiving receive for transmittin. So we can talk and not give away tips on directions of the fox. And of course speak to every one else on our main radios. Our system worked very well. So we are not allowed to participate if we had our second radios with us. Saturday night was Fox hunt night. Sometimes Friday if we had enough people to play. There are thirty members in the club. And fox hunting was always a lot of fun. That was in 1975.

those are some beautiful radios. I remember my first was a 23 channel midland mobile i got at a yard sale for 2 dollars. Now I'm working on getting my ham ticket and getting gmrs. still use cb and looking for a cobra 2000. keep up the great videos.

My very first base station CB back in the mid to late 70s was the 23 channel a.m. only version of that Midland base radio you are showing in this video it was a great radio just had a very lousy ears I mean it picked up every bit of splatter that was out there but it was a talker and it came with a D104 lollipop Mike it was around 30 bucks total for the two pieces

I know it might sound corny but I'm a huge Midland fan and wish Midland would make CB like they did back in the day, with ssb. I would love a base station from Midland like that one too.

Eric, I had a Midland 3 channel/2 watt handheld back in the late 70’s that was built like a tank. Steel case. Was a fun radio. If I remember right I had channel 10, 11 and of course 19. Nice vid man. 73 de W0ZRK

In around 1969 my great uncle gave me a heathkit 5 channel crystal cb i could play with i used a 102 inch whip and surprisingly i could talk to truckers on the highway 5 miles away and ive had many radios since and im just getting back into cb's now i bought a galaxy 959dx from a retired truck driver for 35 dollars (a killer score) and will be using it as a base station until i find an actual base station ... great video 👍
Nice stuff. I remember Cobra made a bunch of base stations with the fake wood grain finish. They looked great in the family room beside your stereo/turntable and 8-track tape player.

I started my CB radio hobby back in 1983 with a Cobra 29 LTD and an old Wilson ground plane base antenna that was rusting away on somebody's rooftop .One day I finally got up enough nerve to go up and make an inquiry if the owner of the house who's name was Tom would be willing to sell that antenna to me if I had a couple fellas come over and remove it if it was not in use. He told me to come back in a few days and he would take it down and give it to me for nothing. I came back I think the following week and he gave me the antenna, He also gave me a Johnson Viking Messenger white face tube CB radio that had 6 channels that all worked great that had a built in strap and also a Montgomery Ward 12 VDC power supply all for free. I insisted that he take at least $40.00 for everything and he said" not on your life just enjoy the hobby". I will never forget Tom .He was an older Gentleman who lived all alone . He told me that his wife recently passed and all his kids were all grown up and living with families of their own . The Wilson antenna, we took apart and replaced the rusted out hardware with new aluminum screws and sanded down the elements to get all the corrosion and weathered grime off of it. That antenna shined up like a new penny after we were done with it and worked like new. At Christmas time for a couple of years after that, I would bring him a Christmas gift basket and some other items and would wave to him from time if I saw him doing some yardwork in his front yard. I guess maybe about a year later after that he passed away in his sleep according to his immediate neighbor who live next door to him but I will never forget his kindness and goodwill gesture that helped me get going in my CB radio hobby.
tube amps are SO clean on the air. I had a Chris 300M. It squealed like a pig on key up but the signal was perfect. A friend of mine popped in a couple caps so it could go sideband. I miss that amp.
There are many who say CB is dead...But that has been said before and has never been true. I got started in CB decades ago and while I am a ham I still love CB and run two 11 meter nets a week...My favorite CB radio: Cobra 2000 GTL with a Silver Eagle mike paired with a D&A Maverick 250 or my Palomar 300A..

I loved CB Radio, Growing up, Back in the Early 60's when I was 10 years old, I built a 3 element beam with a rotator , You could fine any parts you needed at our local dump, Hell I was working on tv,s at that age, Just learning but tried, I owned 3 Predicta TVs, I could Kick my mom in her butt, for selling them , when I started driving Tractor trailer at 18, Now in My 60's there worth a fortune. But I still Own my Lafayette Comstat 25b, Just put all new caps Boosted her a little ,works Great, adding on upper lower side band., So shes good to Go. Great Video of the Past.

You have some neat things there, I have a collection of old 23 channel CB s . Before cell phones used SSB CB s for local cummunications I still have them in every vehicle and my house and shop, have been a HAM for 20 years. KC5HHB

...& I believe that everyone, whether a future CBer, ham, or both, got their first "taste" of radio with a walkie-talkie! & yes, this was definitely the "gateway" drug for sure! 😂 & re CB radio, 11m, I agree with u 100%, as I'd also defend it, just as u wud too; I got started on CB, then became a ham & now, 50 years later, I'm still on BOTH! (& as I've said many times, there's lotsa' CBers I've known who SHOULD be a ham; & likewise, there's many hams who unfairly criticize CB, who, for whatever reason, just don't appreciate the fact that "Radio is Radio" regardless of band & don't realize that there's both good & bad ops on both the CB & amateur bands!🇺🇸

I started on a Lafayette 23 channel mobile and later got Midland 23. Don’t remember the model numbers of either. My last was the Siltronix 1011D. That radio could talk but it was terribly drifty. Long QSOs required your thumb on the VFO. Like you, CB was my gateway to ham also. Not very radioactive these days but still have my ticket. 73 de KB8KNP/KTA0941

CB is going to be in style for another 5 yrs or so because of the sun cycle, plus FM and binary? Why not! I have seen bbs on cb before, so no license, no subscription, heck there was a pizza joint that had digits flying on 23 1/2 going out to delivery cars with a rcv to a laptop, free txt , point to multipoint, drivers never knew the magic box was a cb rcvr 🤣

My uncle gave me his "clegg 99er" and a straight key when I was 7. I’m lucky I didn’t electrocute myself poking around inside. I still have them.

n 1964 I was 13 and built a Heathkit walkie talkie and discovered I could talk to c.b.ers. Then I built a Heathkit GW-12 single channel Base radio and had a blast as KNM0005. In 1994 I got my ham ticket. I now have a Heathkit CB-1, Gw-12 and a GW-22, a Sears Road Talker along with my Ham equipment. CB is pretty much dead here in S/W Ohio except for the lids & perverts that ran everyone off! But occasionally I fire up a Heathkit for nostalgia, if for anything but to fill the room with tube aroma.
Surprised you had no RS stuff. I remember using a 3 channel xtal controlled ,while riding a motorcycle thru the PA turnpike, at night and in the rain. I was young and dumb, now just dumb. :-)
And don’t forget, 11 meters was a ham band at one time. 👍🏻

Just wondering, travelling down a US highway away from ham repeaters, are you more likely to make contact with someone on CB or 2m/70cm? Do truckers still use CB to BS and warn about "bear traps."

My first freebandrig was a 1011C. Excellent on SSB But it was horrible on AM.
I have a sealtronics 1011 d that I got from a pawn shop not sure if it works or not and I think it is only 23 channel

I've been in the CB all my life and I have heard strange noises on the radio that sound like swishing and buzzing noises that seem to be not man-made, and I'm sure you all I've heard them too, my question is what are these noises and where do they come from?

Well, I already got 7 emails and deleted several comments about how I shouldn't be making videos about CB Radio this is a ham radio channel and "if you keep doing that I will unsubscribe!" So I beat them to it by saying it...
SAD HAMS are still upset that the FCC took 11 meters from "tested licensed" to "paid licensed " status. much like GMRS and a Fishing license . I still have a copy of my license from 1977 KBHC-9590

If you want to get rid of the old Siltronix radios send me an e-mail. I'm in QRZ. (KE0SJQ) I had one in the early 80's before I became a Ham and had to sell it. Came down to either play radio or feed the kids! Don't know why but I always wanted another one and compared to my Yaesu FT-2000 the Siltronix is a tin can and a string but they were just a blast to use and they just looked cool.
