Hi my name is Daniel. I'm from Norway and I have sleep maintenance insomnia.
I've had this for about a year now, and it started with awakenings after about 5 hours all of a sudden.
I didnt think much of it but when it continued it became a problem for me.
Quickly summarized, it has been very difficult. The last year ive more or less never been fully refreshed and Ive been concerned if theres something physiologically wrong, and not psychological. Mainly RLS because of restlessness in my body after waking up, or hormonal imbalances like cortisol spikes. Ive done a blood test and all hormones looked normal. However i have not checked during sleep, though im not sure how that gets done but.. I guess my fear is that it will continue like this forever and theres no way to solve it.
I've followed your program closely and ive had days where I sleep better because I calm down, since I over time develop a fear of insomnia. However in those periods I usually still never feel refreshed and sleep about 7 hours and wake up really tired and sort of "energized" in my body, or legs. Only rarely have I had 9 to 8 hours sleep and I feel refreshed but I slowly slip into waking up earlier than I want and start getting frustrated and very tired all the time. Then I wake up earlier then before.
I also have trouble naping, where Im really tired but dont fall asleep when I try to nap.
I know youre supposed to not feed the brain with more intangible threats like "this restlessness could be something serious", since it even worsens those symptoms. But its just sort of hard not REALLY knowing if its mental or physical u know.

Another helpful video, SCS🙏. Personally I find my current sleep maintenance problem less disturbing than not being able to sleep at all…!

Each night, while I am about to fall asleep, I get like an adrenalin rush from my chest and I feel awake, no matter how sleepy I was feeling beforehand (this happens even if I took supplements or even stuff like benadryl/damamine)
At first it’s not so bad, but the more time passes the more adrenaline I feel until I feel it in my whole body and I stay awake all night. During this I also start to have weird thoughts that feel like dreams even though I am awake, probably because my mind is tired and wants to actually sleep.
I get up and go on the sofa to calm down and doing this resets it a bit, but only by a little, a few minutes later it starts again. It starts all night and gets a bit better during the morning, but I either still don’t sleep or I sleep very little (I am not sure how much I am sleeping because I don’t check the clock to not get anxious)
I’ve had insomnia before, but never like this, what could it be? Is it hyperarousal or something?
What can I do to not have all this adrenaline at night?

Hi there, these are what we call sleep-wake transitional events that can be quite frightening and puzzling. But we have a playlist that can really help, it’s the hypnic awareness and jerks playlist. If you contextualize it can really help. Rooting for you

Dunno if this technique will work for you, but it’s helping me at this time: I ask myself, “Hey, what can I learn from this moment?” Then the troubling thought soon passes. At times, though not always, I will then drift into some form of sleep.😴

Hi Coach Dan, quick question for you. I learned from you that it’s pretty normal to wake up multiple times a night but most people don’t remember. My continuous issues is sleep maintenance where every awakening I am aware of. I’m not feeling anxious but I’m still obviously thinking quite a bit. Any tips ? This is extremely bothersome for me and I’m not sure how to let go.

@@LC35202 One of the other coaches has talked about this previously; sleep maintainance insomnia is like a water wheel and the anxiety is the water, the more water there is the faster the wheel spins, this is called hyperarousal.
You mentioned that you no longer have anxiety meaning the water is gone, however the wheel will still spin as it has carried the momentum of the water.
My best advice is to accept the wakefulness as its part of the sleep stage, acknowledge the thinking and move on.

@LBrooke hi, yes it’s very normal to wake up many times per hour. We all do to scan for threats, when there’s no threat we fall back asleep.. except if there’s a misunderstanding and our brain thinks being awake is a threat, then we can have sleep maintenance insomnia. But like all insomnia, it fades when we no longer are afraid of waking up or being awake
